Artists in Residence
Textile Arts Center
Brooklyn, NY
September 15, 2012 – June 15, 2013
Textile Arts Center seeks (6) six working artists or designers dedicated to textiles and looking to deepen their own artistic practice within a community to partake in its Artist Residency program for the 2012 – 2013 cycle.
As part of Textile Arts Center’s mission to act as a resource facility for the textile community, we provide a rigorous studio environment which fosters ongoing and thorough dialogue for textile artists and designers with their work. Throughout its nine month cycle, the program offers a supportive community, continuous critical dialogue, and platforms for professional development in an urban setting to compliment the residents’ life in New York City.
Eligibility:
Artists and designers working in textile media, 21 years and older. Application must be submitted in full, including up to 10 images of current work, by June 15, 2012, by email or mail.
We encourage International applications. Unfortunately, at this time, we are unable to sponsor Visas, or able to supply living accommodations, but can aid in guidance in these areas as needed.
Curriculum
• Structured seminars, which meet weekly, focus on craft theory, technique, exposition, the history and conservation of textiles, and professional development. Each are designed to cultivate artistic rigor and elucidate practice. Workshops explore techniques in weaving, printing and dyeing methods, needle arts, sculpture, drawing, and more. Classes are taught by TAC staff and visiting instructors and professionals.
• Weekly group salon-style critiques with special guests from galleries, museums, textile and design industry, and other working artists complement the weekly seminars.
• Group exhibition via Textile Arts Center at culmination of residency cycle, including studio visits and artist talks. In addition, artists and designers enjoy other exhibition and display opportunities in Brooklyn and Manhattan.
Selection:
Our juried selection process is led by Textile Arts Center and Oak Knit Studio, taking into strong consideration the applicants’ portfolio, clear ideas on work to be created during time of residence, and desire for a strong community.
Tuition + Payments: Current tuition for the program is $8055. We are happy to work with accepted candidates on payment plans and installments for a small administrative fee. In addition, please let us know if you will be applying for financial aid through TAC, or other third party grants.
