We are now looking for submissions for our next two issues. Zakka, deadline end June and Christmas, deadline end September. We are also looking for eight volunteers for the Zakka issue's Designer Challenge, each of whom will be sent seven fat eighths of these cute Retro Bake prints from Makower to make some kind of Zakka - pouches, slippers, eye masks, bags, tea towels, pot holders, tea cosies, tablet cases, cafetiere cosies - etc etc etc.
If you are interested in either of the above, please email lynne@fatquarterly.com including (i) your proposal; (ii) a photo of something you've designed and made in the past - we are looking at design, finish, fabric choices and photography; and (iii) your social media links including blog, instagram etc.

Finders Keepers are independent design & art markets founded in Sydney, that supports new and emerging independent design. We aim to connect with others through our resources and projects. The Finders Keepers website is a growing source for the Australian art and design community and the supporters of our events.
The Finders Keepers aim is to offer a diverse range of creative work to our customers and supporters. We take our application process seriously and want to see that you are passionate about what you do! We expect applications to be presented just as you would apply to a wholesaler/ retailer.
The Finders Keepers has a growing reputation in the art & design community, showcasing new emerging designers and helping them gain exposure and opportunities to develop their brand presence with retailers and the media.
It's also an opportunity for you to interact direct with your customers and gain important insight into your work seen by a wider audience. Our application process over time has become competitive, in saying this we are also all about supporting designers and artists with new work to help establish themselves and are always open to new concepts.
What can be sold at the Markets?
Anything that is designed product including: Jewellery & object design, accessories, clothing, artworks, paper & stationery goods, homewares, lighting, toys, books & zines etc. Price ranges are considered in the application process. We do not allow food products, beauty products or second hand clothing and/or products, basically anything that is not designed by you directly.
Stalls costs are as follows:
$385 (inc gst) - 1.5m x 1.5m - debut stall (first time designers only)
$530 (inc gst) - 2m x 2m stall
$685 (inc gst) - 4m x 2m stall
$970 (inc gst) - 6m x 2m stall (Melb & Syd only)
$1650 (inc gst) - 4m x 4m (Melb & Syd only) - premium feature stall - limited spaces
You will also need to have Public Liability Insurance. Included in this is 2 days stall hire, this does not include your trestle tables and/or clothing racks, this can be hired through Finders Keepers at an additional cost. Stall spaces do not come with walls.
Every designer is given a 1 x web profile, which is kept on the Finders Keepers website even after the markets have concluded and is free for updating in the future.

Sacred Threads is open only to quilters within the United States and Canada. Only quilts or quilted hangings will be considered. A quilt is a fabric sandwich comprised of three layers: a top, a back and filling which are held together with quilting or tying threads. Integration of non-fabric items is acceptable, however, 3D pieces, altered books and items mounted on stretcher bars or framed cannot be accommodated.
Quilts submitted should explore themes of joy, spirituality, peace/brotherhood, inspiration, grief, or healing. Quilts must be an original design or an original execution of a traditional pattern. Quilt dimensions must not be less than 20" x 20" nor exceed 72"x 72"and each quilt must have a 4" horizontal hanging sleeve and an identifying label on the back of the quilt. Quilts exhibited at previous Sacred Threads exhibits are not eligible.

The submissions will be done online. The forms will be available from January 9 - March 9, 2013.
The jurying process will be done from digital images only. Entrants will submit two images per entry (one overall view and one detail view). All images must be of publication quality.

The Cone sisters (Claribel and Etta) were the beneficiaries of the Cone textile empire in North Carolina, and loved surrounding themselves with lush fabrics and textures. Their couches overflowed with pillows covered in multicolored fabrics; they collected fabrics and laces from around the world. Many of their beloved Matisse paintings also featured bright colors and bold patterns.
The Nasher Museum has partnered with Spoonflower, a Durham-based company, to hold a contest with the goal of designing a textile that would look at home in a Matisse painting (view examples in new window). Please do NOT recreate a textile in the images, but instead, create a new design with the color palette below. The top ten designs will be featured at a First Thursday and Art for All events at the Nasher Museum on Thursday, December 6, 2012.

As one of the oldest forms of technology known to human kind, textile technology (making of cloth) has a long history of invention. This exhibition celebrates new explorations in textiles and creative problem solving propelled by curiosity – the synthesis of a ‘new beat.’
New Beat is a juried competition featuring select works by international design students who demonstrate inspired creativity through material manipulation. Resist dyeing, such as shibori, is a specific form of traditionally patterning cloth via manipulation and dye. Its versatility combined with modern technology has gained popular appeal with contemporary artists, including major fashion icons Issey Miyake, Oscar de la Renta and Prada. Bridging this gap between traditional and contemporary poses an interesting challenge, one that the truly imaginative and creative seize as an opportunity to travel new paths in textile’s future.
Entry Fee: $15 per entry
Up to 3 entries may be submitted per artist or collaborative group

An international juried exhibit featuring lengths of constructed or embellished yardage. The exhibit will be on view at HGA's Convergence® 2012 Long Beach conference.
Eligibility:
This exhibit is open to all artists working with constructed and/or embellished yardage.
Three pieces may be entered per artist. Works exhibited in previous Convergence conference exhibits are not eligible.
Submitted work is limited to works made using fiber techniques (interlaced, felted, stitched, dyed, coiled, knotted, pulled, spun, etc.) and can be of any material. All work must be of exhibition quality, completed within the last two years (since January 2010), and not previously published in any national or international print publication prior to the entry deadline.
The size of the finished work must be a minimum of 18 inches (45.7 centimeters) in width and 3 yards (2.7 meters) in length and may not exceed 60 inches (1.5 meters) in width, 10 yards (9.1 meters) in length and 40 pounds (18.1 Kg) in weight.
For each entry, send an 8 inch x 8 inch (20.3 cm) square touch panel with edges finished neatly and ready for display. An identification tag needs to be attached to the back of the square. Entries submitted without a square will not be considered.
Work executed under classroom/educational guidance or supervision is not eligible.
Entry Fees: $25 HGA member, $40 non-HGA member, Student, no fee.
Sales: Work on exhibit will not be for sale.

1. "Scythia 9" international biennial exhibition on contemporary textile art. Artists from all over the world, who work in different techniques of textile are invited. Two art works can be submitted. Three best artists will be awarded by medals.
2. International Conference. Lecturers of fashion departments of colleges, universities, fashion designers, designers of innovative fabrics, leaders of workshops are invited. Eligibility: The Project Selvage competition, presented by Michael Miller and Spoonflower, Inc., is open only to persons who are 18 years of age or older. In order to submit a design to the contest, each participant must also be a registered member of Spoonflower.com at the time of entry. Proof of age may be required. This Promotion is open to people all over the world, although certain elements of the prize -- such as transportation to and from the Fall Quilt Market in Houston -- may be offered only if the winner is a US resident.
How to enter: You must be a registered member of Spoonflower.com in order to enter a design submission for the Project Selvage competition. There is no cost or fee to register or to enter. The contest is limited to one (1) design submission per person. The design theme for the initial round of submissions is baby fabric for boys. Designs must be original and cannot have been entered in previous Spoonflower contests. All previously entered designs will be disqualified and ineligible to be selected. Multiple entries may be disqualified.
Expectations of Entrants: The theme for the initial round of the contest is fabrics for baby boys. Should an entrant’s design advance to the final round he or she will be expected to submit five additional fabric designs as part of a collection. Contest winner will be expected to sign a contract to work with the team at Michael Miller to develop and finalize the collection -- including additional prints -- and to prepare it for manufacture and marketing.
Ownership of winning design: Participants in this contest must agree to grant Michael Miller full ownership rights to their collection should they win the contest. Neither Spoonflower nor Michael Miller assert any rights over submitted designs not designated winners. Entrants are free to delete designs they have uploaded to Spoonflower at any time.
Prize: Winner will receive a contract with Michael Miller to produce and market his or her own fabric collection, a $1000 advance against royalties for sales, and -- if the winner is a resident of the US -- domestic air transportation and lodging to attend Quilt Market in Houston, Texas, October 29-31, 2011. Sponsors cannot provide transportation expenses for non-US winners. The winner will be the collection that receives the greatest number of votes by the time contest voting closes at noon EST on May 4, 2011. All decisions by the Sponsors as to the eligibility of voters, votes, or submitted designs are final. All prize elements are subject to the contract signed between the winner and Michael Miller.

The Halpert Biennial '11, sponsored by the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts and An Appalachian Summer Festival, is a national juried visual art competition and exhibition that is open to all two-dimensional visual artists, over the age of 18 and currently residing in the United States. Any original, two-dimensional works of art including paintings, drawings, prints, photography, mixed media, and works using traditional and non-traditional materials are considered for the selection process. Awards total $5,000.
Each artist is allowed to enter a maximum of six (6) entries. Entries to the competition must have been created within the last two (2) years. Entries not created within the last two years will not be considered. The nonrefundable entry fee for The Halpert Biennial ‘11 is $10 per entry (maximum of $60).

Craft Cubed is an exciting national event presented by Craft Victoria. This annual festival promotes experimental, skilled and ideas-based craft and design. It provides a broad platform for participation and exchange across the entire craft and design community.
The theme for Craft Cubed 2011 is HYBRID. Collaboration, new technologies, crossdisciplinary practice and emerging forms of craft and design will be explored through exhibitions, public programs and satellite events.
SATELLITE PROGRAM
Craft Victoria invites applications for national satellite events including exhibitions, installations, open studios, workshops, and other projects that take place during the festival period: 4 August to 3 September 2011. These events are managed and funded by applicants.

Collaborative Textiles
Alula Editions is accepting proposals for our first round of editions. We work in collaboration with artists to produce repeat patterns for textiles. Each year subscribers to the edition will receive four objects (functional or scuptural) made from this hand silkscreened fabric. The objects will be made to compliment the themes and ideas present in the textiles.
How We Work
Alula Editions is currently accepting proposals for our first round of collaborations. We work with artists to create hand silkscreened textiles which we make into an edition of objects. The objects will be designed to compliment the themes and ideas present in the textiles and may be functional or sculptural.
We are interested in working with artists from all disciplines. Knowledge of repeat pattern design and previous textile experience are not necessary. We can work with any artist who feels that the aesthetic of silkscreen printing will compliment their practice.
Each artist is offered a $500 stipend for their work on the creation of the repeat pattern design. Helena and Amber take care of all production costs and labor. Artists also keep 3 of the editioned objects for themselves.
A Bit More About Alula Editions
Alula Editions seeks to provide artists an alternative mode of distribution outside of galleries and museums. The subscription model allows us to support artistic production while simultaneously building fun and mystery into the act of owning art. Repeat pattern as a form has a rich history, from French Toile to Japanese Sashiko, and offers an opportunity to combine ordinary material goods with imagery that defies expectations or moves beyond purely aesthetic considerations. We will be building a library on our website of links to projects we feel exemplify our interest in artists' use of textiles in contemporary art.

TEXTILE BOOK Textile Design Competition Brief
In 2010 Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia will host the "WORLD CAPITAL OF BOOK EVENT".
Textile and Fashion Design, Department of Textiles, University of Ljubljana is launching the "BOOK IN FASHION" and "TEXTILE BOOK" international design competition which will be the contribution to the events in Ljubljana as a world capital of book.
The competition is open to fashion and textile students at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
The finalists of the fashion and textile design competition will take part at the final exhibition in May 2010 in Ljubljana. The event will be a part of the whole festival celebrating the occasion and will be sponsored by City of Ljubljana.
TEXTILE BOOK Project Description (truncated)
The task is to create a textile book - a tactile diary of textiles based on theme "BOOK". Consider what reading and books mean to you and how will you interpret your relationship through textile technics and materials.
Create and develop a textile book, which is defined and inspired by your own set research and theme.
The candidate will be required to submit all the following qualifying documentation to the Textile and Fashion Design, Department of Textiles, University of Ljubljana:
a. a portfolio in A4 (cm 21 x 29,7) format containing:
- inspiration, research, drawings, colour specifications, textile samples or other materials from a textile book. Each portfolio must be marked with the name and surname of the designer and the name of the college.
- a text detailing the concept of the textile book in no more than 250 words.
Any fabric, technics or material may be used.
Portfolios will not be sent back. Candidates are advised to send copies if this is an issue.
All material must reach Textile and Fashion Design, Department of Textiles, University of Ljubljana at 1st of February 2010.
In February 2010, a jury will examine all material received. The results will be promptly published online on the site http://www.oto-lj-si/ under the »News« section and all selected candidates will be immediately notified.
Selected candidates will be asked to create 1 outfit + accessories to be shown at the exhibition »BOOK IN FASHION«.
JURY AND PRIZES
»Textile book« award's jury will include renowned national fashion experts. Selection criteria will include: creativity, internationality and feasibility.
Judges will consider all entries and then create a shortlist of the best 3 entries.

The finalists will be invited to take part at the final event on 27th of May 2010 in Ljubljana. An international juried exhibit featuring lengths of constructed and/or embellished yardage.
New Mexico is known as a “Land of Enchantment” — a place where the colors of the earth and the sky, the contrast between the light of day and the dark of night, the beauty of the mesas and the mountain ranges provide opportunities to see and inspiration to create. Because of the unique scenic beauty and the rich cultural history of the state, New Mexicans often describe the phenomenon with a knowing smile and a shrug because they know the land is enchanted.

Eligibility:
This exhibit is open to all artists working with constructed and/or embellished yardage.
Three pieces may be entered per artist. Pieces must be originally conceived and created by the entrant: work should be one-of-a-kind, of exhibition quality, not previously exhibited at a Convergence, and completed within the past two years (since January 2008) and not previously published.
The size of the finished work must be a minimum of 18 inches (45.7 centimeters) in width and 3 yards (2.7 meters) in length and may not exceed 60 inches (1.5 meters) in width, 10 yards (9.1 meters) in length and 40 pounds (18.1 Kg) in weight.
For each entry, send an 8 inch x 8 inch (20.3 cm square) swatch with edges finished neatly and ready for display. An identification tag needs to be attached to the back of the swatch. Entries submitted without a swatch will not be considered.
Work executed under classroom/educational guidance or supervision is not eligible.
Entry Fees $25 HGA member, $40 non HGA member, Student (attach copy of student ID from accredited educational institution),no fee.
Awards: First, second and third place awards will be selected by the juror. Additional special criteria awards may be available.
Sales: Work on exhibit will not be for sale.

Exhibition Dates: June 14 through June 27 during the Symposium at the University Plaza Conference Center, Columbus, OH.
- Entry Fee: $35.00 For Up To Three Entries (U.S. Funds Only). No limitation on how many times you may enter.
- Size Limitation: Minimum Size 1 Yard, Maximum Size 3 Yards.
- Dyes or pigments must be either washable or dry cleanable...and all colors must be stable.
- Quality of fabrics used is important...no Rayons or Acetates. Sleazy fabrics are not acceptable. Fabrics must be 100% cotton, broadcloth, 100% cotton sateen, 100% pima cotton, 100% cotton muslin, or a quality of cotton comparable to these listed. Light weight wools are acceptable as are silks. BUT...REMEMBER we are looking for yardage only.
- The fabric can be produced by one individual or by a team.
- All entries must be for sale. Sale price must include a commission of 30% for entire yardage. No yardage will be cut.
- Jurying will be of the actual pieces and not from slides. PRIZES will be awarded.
- All accepted entries will be displayed in June during QUILT SURFACE DESIGN SYMPOSIUM, at the The University Plaza Hotel & Conference Center, Columbus, Ohio.
- Return postage must be included plus a large SASE for Acceptance Forms.
- Send APPLICATION FORM, ENTRY FEE, LARGE SASE, RETURN POSTAGE FOR PIECES, AND TAGGED ENTRIES to arrive between May 1 and May 15.
