TOWARD 2050 a Public Engagement Artwork

DEADLINE: December 15, 2024

TOWARD 2050

a Public Engagement Artwork
Desert Botanical Garden
Phoenix, AZ
February to May 2025

TOWARD 2050 is a Public Engagement Artwork reaching across all American states, territories, and beyond.

YOUR textile work can become an important part of TOWARD 2050, which will culminate in this immersive installation at Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, Arizona. Makers are called to create environmentally themed, folded textile panels in the style of "prayer flags". Our goal is to collect at least 2600 double sided flags, (5200 panels), to define the pathways of this interactive labyrinth experience.

It is organized by Arizona-based artist Ann Morton and will be installed at Desert Botanical Garden in early 2025.

PARTICIPATE TO MAKE FLAGS
This project begins with YOU. Use any of  these techniques: weaving, sewn/pieced, embroidered, applique, screen print/block print fabric, resist dyed fabric - or any combination of these techniques to make double sided flags. (Knitted or crocheted flags are acceptable, but MUST be backed with a lightweight, stabilizing cloth backer). Makers are encouraged to re-use materials you already have to create your own interpretation of beloved elements of our environment. (The flags are 10" x 21"/folded in half with a 1/2" pocket at the top.)

In designing your flag(s), you are encouraged to reflect on what you love most about our earth's environment - flora, fauna, the forests, our oceans, the air, our skies, our water - use words or poetry, be illustrative or totally abstract in your creation.

Once you sign up, a packet with detailed instructions will be sent including cotton tags to add to your flag panels, and postcards to send to your lawmakers.

Line Describing a Cone_Katonah Museum of Art

Deadline: December 15, 2014 (ONLINE)

Line Describing a Cone: Tri-State Juried Exhibition
Katonah Museum of Art

Beitzel and Righter Galleries
Katonah, New York
January 18 – February 15, 2015

The definition of space is one of the fundamental features of visual representation in twentieth and twenty-first century art. From the oscillating layers of a Cézanne painting to the deep corridors of depth in a de Chirico work, artists have addressed the elements of three dimensions in various and often competing ways. Using film as light cutting through space, contemporary artist Anthony McCall’s work, Line Describing a Cone (1973) inspires this year’s theme; the piece is spatial and temporary, with light the primary medium giving form to an environment.

Artists are invited to explore the meaning of space in their work, using whatever materials and expressive outlets they require. Representing space is but one potential feature; experiencing with works that proclaim their physical relationship to their environment another.

Artists from the tri-state area (NY, NJ, CT) are invited to submit up to three paintings, drawings, prints, mixed media works, sculptures, photographs, or videos for consideration. All work must be executed since 2010.

FEE: Katonah Museum Artists Association (KMAA) members $15, non-members $25. Payments will be securely processed with PayPal and are nonrefundable. All artists are invited to join the Katonah Museum of Art Artists Association.

JUROR
Eva Respini is Curator at The Museum of Modern Art.

AWARDS
Works in all media are eligible for awards.
FIRST PRIZE $1000, SECOND PRIZE $750, THIRD PRIZE $500

First Textiles. The Beginnings of Textile Manufacture in Europe and the Mediterranean

Deadline: December 15, 2014 {EMAIL}

Call for Papers
International Conference
First Textiles:
The Beginnings of Textile Manufacture in Europe and the Mediterranean
Danish National Research Foundation

Centre for Textile Research
University of Copenhagen
Copenhagen, Denmark
7th-8th May 2015

The two-day international conference First Textiles. The Beginnings of Textile Manufacture in Europe and the Mediterranean will take place on the 7th-8th May 2015 in Copenhagen.

The venue will be held at the National Museum of Denmark and the Centre for Textile Research at the University of Copenhagen.

An abstract of minimum 500 words accompanied by a short list of your publications and research relevant to textile studies are to be sent to the organizers by the 15th December 2014.

The aim of the conference is to present and discuss the recent achievements in the research field of the most ancient textiles and textile techniques in primarily Europe, Asia and North Africa in the Neolithic and the Early Bronze Age (ca. 8th-3rd millennia BC); the application of varied interdisciplinary methods of systematic analysis of textiles, such as studies on the most ancient textile remains, basketry, mat and textile imprints in clay; textile tools (e.g. spindle whorls, loom weights, needles, shuttles); experiments with copies of ancient textile implements; and recently developed scientific methods of analysing textiles and recognising the provenience of fibres. These all offer important insights into the oldest textile techniques, their beginnings and development throughout prehistory.

The number of speakers will be limited, and priority will be given to presentations of new material, to new analyses of older finds, and to new analytical tools.

There will be no conference fee and all are welcome to attend the conference as listeners, however, the organisers request that you to register in advance.

HUNGER Online Exhibition

Deadline: December 15, 2013, 9:00 am, PST (EMAIL)

HUNGER
Online Exhibition

crafthaus.com
January 15 - February 15, 2014

With diet as a way of life for many in our culture, we’ve been taught that one should Eat to Live. We've forgotten that from the 18th through the early 20th century, being fat was a sign of health, prosperity, and an attraction at a time when food was scarce and many went hungry. Hunger, in all its metaphorical forms, is part of our personal and public conversation. Many of us struggle with HUNGER, and yearn for the pleasure of food, love, possessions, control, sex or POWER.

If your work deals with HUNGER, choose five of your best shots. Twenty-four works will be selected for an on-line crafthaus.com exhibition curated by Alice Simpson; to broaden the conversation to include other artists’ voices and visions on the subject of HUNGER.

Work in ALL MEDIA is encouraged. Twenty-four selected work will be highlighted for one month on-line at crafthaus.com, and then become part of Past Online Exhibits.

Curator’s selections will be made based on the relationship of the work to the theme of HUNGER.

CRAFTHAUS MEMBERSHIP IS NOT REQUIRED to enter!

Badlands National Park Artist In Residence Program

Two Deadlines: (POSTMARK)

December 15, 2012 - Spring Residency
June 15, 2013 - Fall Residency

Artist In Residence Program
Badlands National Park

South Dakota
Spring Residency (March 15 and May 15)
Fall Residency (September 15 and November 15)

The Artist in Residence program at Badlands National Park was founded in 1996 and is open to all professional artists. Writers, composers and all visual and performing
artists are invited to interpret this wind-swept environment through their work. The program provides time for artists to get away from everyday responsibilities to focus on their surroundings and their medium.

The park offers an apartment located in small housing complex at park headquarters at no cost to the artist. The residency lasts for a minimum of four weeks and a
maximum of six weeks. Additionally, the park provides a reimbursement for expenses not to exceed $300. Reimbursible expenses include supplies for school programs,
travel, or meals. All expenses incurred above $300 are the responsibility of the artist.

Several artists have been successful in seeking donations of supplies and materials from businesses or museums in their home communities prior to coming to Badlands
for their residency, using the reimbursement as matching funds.

Each artist is asked to contribute to the park a mutually agreed upon piece of original work representative of their stay in Badlands National Park within one year of completion of their residency.

Because of Badlands’ strong commitment to education and outreach into our rural school districts, all artists are required to present two sessions in a local school to introduce students to an aspect of art and its interpretation of their Badlands home.

We consider all forms of arts except those that manipulate or disturb the park’s environment or are disrespectful to any race or gender. Selections are made without regard to race, religion, marital status, sex, age, or national origin. The facilities for this program are not wheelchair accessible.

All applicants must submit: (truncated)
1. A resume and summary of creative works.
2. A statement of what they hope to gain from a residency at Badlands National Park and what they hope to incorporate into their classroom presentations.
3. Up to three choices of beginning and ending dates for their residency. Residencies are a minimum of four weeks, a maximum of six weeks, and must fall within the availability dates.

François Schneider Foundation “Contemporary Talents” Competition

Deadline: December 15, 2012 (ONLINE)

“Contemporary Talents” Competition

François Schneider Foundation

Presentation of the theme: WATER

Water, essential to all life and to the development of mankind, is a multifaceted and yet singular element. It is symbolically one of the natural elements, with air, fire and earth, which make up the universe. It is at heart of mythology and religion. It is a sign and a symbol, and constantly changes form. Water is a natural resource, of course, but for a large part of mankind, it is the rarest asset.

Competition Rules
This competition is open to candidates of all nationalities, all ages, and in the following six disciplines of the plastic arts: painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, photography and video.

In the installation and sculpture categories, the artists have the possibility of submitting either existing works or projects. For the four other disciplines, only existing works may be presented. Each year, the François Schneider Foundation devotes to the “Contemporary Talents” competition a maximum budget of €300,000, which is divided into two parts: 150,000 € for the acquisition of seven works and another 150,000 € for the realisation of the works presented in project form - will reward
the seven artists’ projects, including the “Water Talent” award.

Organisation of the Competition
Artists are invited to submit their offerings on the water theme, realistic or utopian, figurative or abstract, whilst offering a singular and sensitive viewpoint on this theme.

All the proposals will be examined by several committees of experts - four pre-selection committees (each comprising two professionals qualified in their field: photo, video, painting/drawing, sculpture/installation) - who will examine the work of the 40 finalists.

The choice of finalists will be submitted to an International Grand Jury comprised of well-known personalities from the world of art who will select the seven winners.

Registration: until 15 December 2012

Online submission of candidatures: until 5 pm on 31 December 2012

Examples of acceptable work include, but are not limited to those incorporating: weaving, knitting, sewing, spinning, dying, quilting, felting, braiding, lace making, macramé, crochet, basketry, tapestry, and textiles.

What if I incorporate fiber into my work, but I am not a ‘fiber artist’?
You do not have to be a “fiber artist” to participate in the BAM Biennial 2012: High Fiber Diet. Interdisciplinary artists are encouraged to apply.

Yes. Artists wishing to work together should submit a single entry form for consideration. All artists in a single entry are encouraged to include images of their individual and/or previous collaborative work as examples.

International Biennial of Contemporary Textile Art -- WTA -- Mexico 2011

Two Deadlines: (RECEIVE)
December 15, 2010 [All Salons except below]
February 15, 2011 [Salon for Collaborative Textiles-REDES (Nets)] ONLY

VI INTERNATIONAL BIENNIAL OF TEXTILE ART MEXICO 2011

World Textile Art Organization
XALAPA, MEXICO CITY and OAXACA
Mexico
May 16 - 31,2011

Without deviating from our intended course, World Textile Art (WTA) is working relentlessly towards a stronger promotion of any shape, content, and form of contemporary textile art.

The challenge that WTA has, is a major one – to open an unexplored path that ties its recurrent promotions of textile art to an adequate bridge that benefits, contemporary artistic creativities on the American continents as for the rest of the world.

Each WTA Biennial takes on characteristics and idiosyncrasies of its host country, for which no two are alike. The VI International Biennial of Contemporary Textile Art WTA – AIR will have unique qualities corresponding to Mexico, a land where textile activity is extended throughout its regions. Ancestral traditions vie for coexistence amidst the clashes wrought by imposed globalized contemporaneity.

Mexico is the land of Quetzalcoatl, the plumed serpent. And like this mythic creature that brings wisdom and creativity to Mesoamerican peoples, the VI International Biennial of Contemporary Textile Art WTA –AIR will thread a serpentine path through the country. It will span three cities – Mexico City, Xalapa and Oaxaca – as the Biennial events occur in stages in the distinct venues. Each one will be memorable and unique.

The VI International Biennial of Contemporary Textile Art WTA –AIR will integrate different media which are part of the contemporary arts and of textiles. It carries this precept from the previous Biennial: the challenge to resignify the very concept of ‘textile art’ - strengthening the different investigations that hybridize explorations and question categories while maintaining textiles as the integrating concept.

Yet the VI International Biennial of Contemporary Textile Art WTA – AIR strives to open up even more spaces for participation. Six different Calls for Entries to the six distinct Textile Art Salons are in accord with different ways of expressing and working through textiles – be it by size, type of work, technique, concept or media. Accessible to every interested artist, projects do not compete with different types of works, but are placed in their own category, amidst peers.

Salon for Small Format Textile Art

All the works in the six Calls for Entries should be worked through these criteria, over the last two years, and for this event.

Additionally, the VI International Biennial of Contemporary Textile Art WTA – AIR will include various Sections of Invited Artists (Outdoor Works and Interior Works) the International Conference on Contemporary Textile Arts of the Universidad Veracruzana: “Considerations between Textiles and Society: a Recapitulation” Special and Parallel Exhibitions of Textile Art, Workshops, Diverse Complementary Events and Cultural Tours.
