Lexington Art League: Food/Eating Exhibition

Food/Eating Exhibition
Lexington Art League

Lexington, Kentucky
May 22-August 9, 2015

The Lexington Art League (LAL), a contemporary visual art center in Lexington, Kentucky, is seeking artwork submissions and project proposals that in some way address food and/or eating. We eat for a variety of reasons: pleasure, hunger, comfort, social ritual. Various food industry issues, from sustainable agriculture and organic farming to GMO’s and government nutrition regulation, have brought about political, ethical, and social debate. At the same time, hunger and obesity battle as epidemics in different parts of the world, serving to amplify the effect of global wealth inequality.

This exhibition aims to explore complex issues related to food and eating through social, emotional, ethical, religious, political, health, and other perspectives. Artists are encouraged to creatively interpret the theme and submit for consideration any work they think might be of interest.

Eligibility and Media
All artists, age 18 and older, are eligible to submit a proposal. All media and styles will be considered. Additional support may be available for installation, performance, or community projects.

Woven Together: Firestorm

Deadline: April 8, 2013 (POSTMARK) or (EMAIL)

Woven Together: Firestorm
Pikes Peak Weavers Guild of Colorado Springs

Business of Art Center
Manitou Springs, Colorado
June 21, 2013 to August 3, 2013

By early August, an astounding 42,933 wildfires had been entered into the U.S. database and 6.4 million acres had burned. The Waldo Canyon fire alone consumed two lives, 346 homes and 18, 247 acres. At its peak, 32,000 people were evacuated from Colorado Springs, Manitou Springs and nearby communities. 2012 proved to be one of the western region’s worst fire seasons in decades.

As artists, how do we respond to disasters like these? We use our medium to create work that expresses the emotional turmoil of seeing, experiencing and surviving wildfires: horror, fear, loss, relief, gratitude and renewal. From all of these comes a commemoration, Woven Together: Firestorm.

Entries must contain handweaving, spinning, or dyeing techniques executed by the artist and must be finished objects (not yardage or skeins). Hand-manipulated fiber techniques such as basketry, kumihimo, and ply-split braiding are eligible for entry. Traditional and non-traditional weave structures, fibers, and dyes may be used for both functional and decorative textiles. Entries must be original, completed within the last two years, not executed under supervision or using a kit, and not previously exhibited or published.

Each artist may submit up to three entries. The fee is $15 per entry and is non-refundable.

Juror: Jeanne Steiner is a textile artist who has merged weaving with dyeing for over 35 years. She holds a B.F.A. in Art from Colorado State University and is currently serving as Weaving Instructor and Arts and Crafts Program Director at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

MCBA Prize: Internationl Artists Book Award

Deadline: April 8, 2011 at 5pm {Central U.S. time zone} (ONLINE)

MCBA Prize
Internationl Artists Book Award

Minnesota Center for Book Arts
Minneapolis, MN
July 30, 2011

The MCBA Prize is the first honor in the United States to recognize book art from across the field and around the world. The MCBA Prize celebrates the diversity of book art and encourages discussion rather than limiting recognition to one aspect of this vital field.

Integrity will determine the winning work. Integrity refers to a unity of form, materials and content that reflects an artist's vision.

Book art in a broadly defined field. Forms, processes, traditions and approaches are open. Work may include unique book objects, altered books, graphic novels, 'zines, concrete poetry, conceptual, visual and literary works. Processes may include any printing or printmaking methods such as photo-mechanical, hand-worked, analog/digital, relief printmaking, letterpress, intaglio, and screen-printing, as well as hand-lettering. Works may be in edition or unique.

The finished work can depart from a bound book format to engage metaphors of the book in sculpture or installation. Work can be created collaboratively, but ultimately must result from an artist or artists' vision and active participation.

ELIGIBILITY AND RESTRICTIONS
All artists who use the book format as their primary means of expression are eligible to apply. Accepted works may range from hand-printed fine press books, to inexpensive pamphlets, to one-of-a-kind sculptural works that reference the role of the book in contemporary society. All techniques, approaches and methods of creative expression will be considered. Artists may submit multiple entries.
- Work must have been completed since August 1, 2009.
- Students are not eligible, nor is work completed as part of a degree-granting program.
- MCBA staff and board members are not eligible.
- Collaborative works are eligible with the consent of all involved parties.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF FINALISTS
The five finalists will be announced May 27, 2011. The winner will be announced at the MCBA Prize Celebration on July 30, 2011.

AWARDS
5 Finalists receive a $500 award, free participation in the Book Art Biennial and $750 travel and lodging stipend if the finalist chooses to attend the Biennial. Additional support for travel may be offered based on need and availability.

ENTRY FEE
