We believe the hallmarks of an ideal resident artist include: proficiency in their selected area(s), comfort with community engagement, self-motivation, and a strong sense of creative direction. The residencies are open to all professional and emerging artists, age 18 and over, regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, age, marital status, or physical or mental disability. Open to Artists of any discipline.

Space for an end-of-residency exhibition and reception for the artist provided.

Online exhibition of work produced during residency (if desired).

Artists will have the opportunity to plan and create paid workshop opportunities during their residency.  Artists who are residents during the spring/summer can apply to be a paid teaching artist during our Art Camps. This is a required part of the residency.  The hourly rate is $25/hr. You can also choose to offer free classes/workshops.

Artists will be put in touch with local press, and other media outlets to discuss their residency.

Third Friday Artwalks organized by 6th Street provide an unparalleled opportunity for residents to engage with the public not only at the Studios but anywhere on the artwork in downtown, opening up limitless ideas for interactive art projects.

Artists are required to host open studios one (1) day a week:
Wed 1-5 PM, Thurs 2-5 PM, Fri 10-6 PM, or Sat 11-3 PM.

We encourage artists to involve the downtown community in their project(s). The front exhibition area, where the studio is located, is open to the public on Tuesdays & Thursdays from  10-2pm. This provides the artist a unique opportunity to interact and share with the public.

Seeking a means to raise up artists and their role in society, Water Street Studios presents a new annual series, Artists as Visionaries. As familiar paradigms break down locally and globally, artists can be poised to take on important roles as creative problem-solvers, philosophers, and inventors. Often thought by non-artists to exist only for decoration and entertainment, artists' careful observations can yield ideas that change our collective lives for the better.

Each year, Artists as Visionaries will ask artists of every media to research and respond to an issue that affects our whole culture. Creative responses will be shared, experts on the focus topic will be invited to speak, workshops will be offered, important dialogue with the community will be generated, and connections will be made.


Climate Crisis: Solutions

Picturing ourselves in a future changed dramatically due to global warming is a difficult thing for most people to fully imagine, even for those who study the science and work to communicate to others about the crisis thru their employment or volunteer activities. Most people cannot conceive of an economy that is not based on fossil-fuels as that is all we have known for the past 150 years. Many people cannot recognize or understand just how our global environment is becoming more and more hostile to sustaining life as we know it. Solutions to the crisis are appearing every day but as a civilization we are not unlike the deer caught in the headlights.

SNAP welcomes submissions from artists, collectives, and collaborations practicing in all print & print-related mediums. SNAP’s Main Gallery Space is programmed through an annual call for submissions as well as through curated exhibitions.

The SNAP Gallery programs eight Main Gallery exhibitions every year. Programming is determined annually by jury from submissions.

SNAP Main Gallery Submission Requirements

Project proposals should consist of:
1. 10 – 15 numbered high quality digital images on OSX Apple-Mac compatible disc (slides are not accepted)
2. Corresponding image list indicating the artist’s name, title of work, media and date
3. An artist statement which describes and contextualizes the work presented. (maximum 2 pages)
4. C.V. (artist resume) (maximum 3 pages)
5. A project proposal explaining the specifics of the proposed exhibition. (maximum 3 pages)
6. 1 – 2 items of support materials as appropriate (DVD, Publications, Print Articles). These support items will not be returned.
7. Please indicate which work will be included as well as any extraordinary assistance required, including technical support)

Due to the large volume of submissions, incomplete proposals or those that exceed the maximum number of requested pages/support material will not be reviewed.

The digital era is altering how we read books so we wanted a challenge that alters the way we perceive books. Whether it be an altered book or incorporates pages of a book, ‘some things looming’ challenges you to create the ultimate …Page Turner.

Our major requirements for this challenge are that you incorporate fiber techniques and any parts or pages of a book (preferably ones that would be discarded anyway).

Rules for Entering: (truncated)
* All work must be original, one-of-a-kind, made by the artist submitting the entry.
* Artists may submit up to a maximum of three works, completed within the last three years, to be in the exhibition. Due to space restrictions, 2-D work must be 40"x 40" or less, 3-D work on pedestals no larger than 18"x18"x 18". Freestanding works will be accepted. No large installations can be considered. Yardage is acceptable.
* Entries must be postmarked or electronically received by February 15, 2013. No exceptions! Our entry form (variations of our form not acceptable)
and entry fee of $30 (to help defray costs) must accompany your entry.
* You may submit up to 3 images per works submitted. (Max 3 works x 3 images = max 9 total images)
* Submit general artist Statement and a 100 word (or less) write up for each work submitted (for catalog and promo). Must be submitted on your CD
or emailed with your images.


Selection of Artwork:
Entries will be selected by some things looming based on their quality and relevance to the goal/theme of the exhibit. Unusual, experimental, and traditional fiber work is all good. Please be certain that it is quality-prepared for exhibit, completed within the last three years, and have relevance to the theme. Selected
artists are responsible for costs of shipping their work to and from the gallery.

The Contemporary Artists Center has recently opened its newest residency program on the campus of the Woodside National Historic Register Site in Troy, NY. Two neo-gothic stone church buildings now house our artist program and welcome artists from all over the U.S. and abroad.

The CAC is located 2.5 hours north of NYC, and is currently accepting applications for the Spring season.

The CAC focuses on emerging and early career artists and accepts applicants who offer quality in their art and encourages diversity of style, medium (2-D, 3-D, 4-D) and concepts.

Our facility features high-ceiling, adaptable studio space open 24 hours a day with some specialized studio facilities, exhibition opportunities, weekly critiques, and free access to all CAC events. The living area includes lofted bedrooms, living room / library, dining room, and kitchen & bath.

The residency program offers artists the time and support to create new work and fosters an environment that encourages creativity, dialog, and experimentation

Fellowships available. All residency artists receive some level of financial assistance.

GENERAL RULES (truncated)

* All exhibited work must be original to and handcrafted by the accepted Artist. Artist guarantees the accuracy of the description of the work presented to the jury and the authenticity of the work as the creation of their own hands.

* Artists must be at least 18 years old.

* Only those Artists accepted in the Jewelry category may exhibit or sell jewelry. All jewelry, regardless of the materials used, must be entered in
the Jewelry category.

* No more than two artists may collaborate on work. Both Artists must be included on the application. Artist collaborators that produce a single product may qualify as a single exhibitor but each artist must equally and creatively contribute to each piece.

MEDIA CATEGORIES
Media categories are used by Art In The Pearl as a tool for organizing Artistsʼ images into logical, related groups for the juryʼs review. The following are the media categories currently accepted for the juryʼs review: 2-D Mixed Media, 3-D Mixed Media, Computer Generated Work, Drawing, Emerging Artist, Fiber, Glass, Jewelry, Metalwork, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, Wood

FEES
A nonrefundable jury fee (to cover jury expenses and administrative overhead) of $35.00 is required for each entry form in every category submitted.
Upon receipt of an acceptance letter, the selected artist is required to reserve and pay for their booth space. (See Rules of Participation for booth fees).

AWARDS
A total of three Best of Show awards are given to Artists for outstanding work. Award winners are invited to return in their awarded category the following year. An image of that Artistʼs work selected by Art in the Pearl will be on the promotional posters or post cards, web site, and in paid advertising for the show and other media promotions for the show.

This international contemporary art event, with the textile element as a main reference in creativity, research and concern in all forms of artistic expression. It takes the format of triennial due to the need of continuity of the project, that will in the future motivate artists to pursue an experimental and cutting edge approach, and maintain the audiences interest in Textile Art. CONTEXTILE 2012 intents to create dynamics between local, regional and international organizations aiming to expand the quality of its cultural program...

CONTEXTILE 2012 will take place in the Portuguese city of Guimarães from the 1st of September to 14th of October, 2012. It takes part of the program of GUIMARÃES 2012 –European Capital of Culture.

The triennial program will include a Textile Art Competition and a Acquisition Prize (3000€) will be awarded to the winner. This competition is open to all national and international artists.

Artists may apply until the 15th of February 2012 with artwork projects from 2009 to 2012, and all forms of visual arts will be accepted, based on 3 fundamental criteria:

1- All works have to include the TEXTILE element, either by construction, and material used, or by chosen theme or concept.
2- Dimensions cannot exceed 2mt in all directions and have a maximum weight of 20 kg.
3- All works have to respond equally to creativity, originality and technical skill.


CONDITIONS OF ENTRY (truncated)
1. CONTEXTILE 2012 - ACQUISITION PRIZE is centered in the textile element, either by construction, and material used, or by chosen theme or concept.
2. This competition is open to Portuguese and international artists, that have completed 18 years of age by the entry deadline date of 15th of February, 2012.
3. Entries of all areas of visual art mediums will be accepted. Are excluded all forms of applied arts and craft works.
4. The competition is of individual artwork and collective projects are not accepted.
5. The CONTEXTILE ACQUISITION PRIZE of 3000€ will be individually. attributed. It will be announced at the Opening of the Exhibition. The winner will also be informed
by e-mail.
6. The artworks will be judged and selected by a panel of six judges, including the director of CONTEXTILE 2012, the director of Kaunas Textile Biennial, and established and practicing artists and art critics. The jury may decide not to attribute the Prize if the art works do not match the required standards of creativity, originality and technical skill.
7. There will be two rounds of judging. The first is a pre-selection over viewing portfolios and proposed art projects. The deadline date for art proposal and/or projects and also portfolios is 15th of February 2012. Artists will be notified by e-mail until 30th of March 2012, and may consult official listings in Contextile2012 internet site.
8. The artworks accepted for exhibition and competition are limited to 2mt in all directions and 20kg of maximum weight.

Submitted work is limited to works made using fiber techniques (interlaced, felted, stitched, dyed, coiled, knotted, pulled, spun, etc.) and can be of any material. All work must be of exhibition quality, completed within the last two years (since January 2010), and not previously published in any national or international print publication.

The size of finished work may not exceed 60 inches (1.524 meters) in any dimension and it may not exceed 30 pounds (13.6 kilograms) in weight.

Work executed under classroom/educational guidance or supervision is not eligible.

Entry Categories
Original design Abstract Wall quilts explore shapes, textures, colours, lines or suggest representations of people, places or objects and demonstrate personal expression and originality in design, colour and/or techniques.

Original design Representational Wall quilts depict landscapes, portraits and pictures that are fairly accurate and realistic; may be whole cloth, appliqué, collage and/or any combination of techniques.

Traditional Wall quilts, original interpretation, are based on traditional-style piecing and/or appliqué, using blocks and/or
patterns in the public domain; with pleasing colour combinations and approaches to combining the blocks.

Traditional Wall and Bed Quilts, from patterns or books, are based on traditional style piecing and/or appliqué, made from
published patterns or books. (Written permission to use the pattern from both the designer and publisher is required as part of the entry.)

Bedquilts, original interpretation, are functional quilts to be used on a specific sized bed – crib to king.

Wearable Art, original interpretation, consists of a garment or outfit constructed using quilting techniques, with some quilted areas.

❏ Credit must be given to the author, teacher, artist, etc. who inspired the work.
❏ Direct products from kits, workshops, books or patterns will NOT be accepted with the exception of items entered under Traditional quilts made from patterns or books category.
❏ Acknowledgement must be given to anyone participating in the execution of the work.
❏ Work must have been completed after January 1, 2009.
❏ Work must NOT have been shown in a Canadian national-level juried/judged quilting exhibition/competition prior to May 2011.

The Works Art & Design Festival is proud to present the largest FREE art and design festival in North America. The Works is an exciting way for artisans to attract new patrons from Edmonton’s Downtown core to the art community. Artisans and Designers can securely sell and promote their talents through 2 options – Tents or Co-op Tables. The Works Art & Design Festival prefers hand-crafted, locally made art and designs. Open for all 13 days of the Festival from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM, each booth/table will be supplied with a 110V outlet, one table and two chairs. Each vendor must provide a representative during all festival operating hours – RAIN OR SHINE. Volunteers are available for restroom/meal relief. Onsite Security 24/7.

The Works Art Market Tents - located on Churchill Square, each canopied tent is 10’ x 10’ ft. Shared tents are allowed.

The Works Art Market Co-op Tables - The Co-op tables offer artisans to sell and showcase a smaller selection of artworks. This option is also available to schools, community organizations and art networks where a bazaar atmosphere is shared with fellow artisans and organizations. One table (4 feet long) and two chairs will be provided, but each table must be entirely self-contained.

Submissions will be juried on the basis of design, technical skill, originality, and salability. All products and images submitted for jury and marketed at The Works Festival must be the artist’s original designs and be of professional quality. The juried artist/craftsperson assures that he or she has direct, hands-on involvement over the creative and production process.

$300 Refundable Damage Deposit for Tent and Table Vendors: Due at time of application.

The Hillsborough Arts Council seeks submissions for a themed exhibition, “Gardens and the Natural World,” to be held in the HAC Gallery from April 22 to May 21, 2011. The show is envisioned to include a broad range of plant and animal life from florals to botanicals to landscapes and beyond. 2-dimensional wall art and 3-dimensional items such as vases, bowls, plates, jewelry and garden or yard decor (bird baths, stepping stones, stakes, etc.) are all examples of acceptable items.

Eligibility
Artists living or who have studios in Orange, Alamance, Chatham, Durham or Wake counties are eligible.

Requirements
-Original works of art, handcrafted by the artist
-Any media
-Work must fit through a 2.5’ x 6’ doorway.
-All works must be of material stable enough to withstand handling and exhibiting, suitably framed and/or prepared for installation.
-Artworks should be for sale and can be restocked periodically, as items are sold, throughout the duration of the exhibition.
-The HAC will take a 30% commission.

How to Apply
-The application must be completed and submitted online and materials mailed by US Post. Application is not complete until all materials are received.
-5 digital images on CD (7 inches maximum for longest dimension, 72 pixels/inch)
-Images do not have to represent actual artwork that will be shown in the exhibition.

REWIND will analyse the intertwining of the flow of time and the changing concept of art by (re)telling a story(ies) through the exhibitions based on reflecyions of the PAST, PRESENT and FUTURE:

THE PAST: a reinterpretation of the concept of textile as formed by the history of art (exhibition REWIND HISTORY);
THE PRESENT: artists’ personal stories are actualised through textile connotations (exhibition REWIND PERSONAL STORY);
THE FUTURE: scientific (smart and high-tech textile) and artistic experiments (exhibition REWIND INTO THE FUTURE).

REWIND INTO THE FUTURE

Is an experimental exhibition attempting to reveal the most recent advances in high technology and smart textile. The exhibition curated by an international team will present the newest discoveries of science and examples of contemporary art using innovative technologies related to textile. The interactive exhibition and creative laboratories, which will provide many surprises for curious seekers of novelties, will be accompanied by a seminar during which scientists, artists from all over the world and biennial visitors will share their creative ideas and inspirations.

REWIND PERSONAL STORY

This is a competition-based exhibition inviting artists from all over the world working in different media to present their works related to their personal story. In the exhibition, textile is seen from a new point of view: as a connotation, a hint and a conceptual mediator of experience. The narrative aspect is very important in the exhibition: every group of works presented by an artist will reveal and retell an individual story related to the family, the social and socio-cultural context.

We invite artists to apply with a group of works or an installation project to the selection committee. It should reveal fragments of the artist’s personal story or the plot not through one, but through several textually interacting works. A personal story is a very wide concept. Doubtlessly, it is determined both by the cultural and social reality, in which a personality matures and grows.

The exhibition will attempt to present as varied stories as possible in order to involve the audience into “the world of stories” as an [interactive] journey through multicultural and multidimensional experiences.

The Hillsborough Arts Council seeks submissions for exhibitions during 2011. Four shows each lasting four weeks are available as part of the art walk during Last Fridays in Hillsborough. These are solo and/or two person exhibitions. The selection committee will pair artists or grant a solo exhibition.

Eligibility
Artist living or who have studios in Orange, Alamance, Chatham, Durham or Wake counties are eligible.

Requirements
-Original works of art
-Any media
-Work must fit through a 2.5’ x 6’ doorway.
-All works must be of material stable enough to withstand handling and exhibiting, suitably framed and/or prepared for installation.
-Artworks should be for sale and remain on display throughout the duration of the exhibition.
-The HAC will take a 30% commission.

How to Apply
-The application must be completed and submitted on line and materials mailed by US Post. Application is not complete until all materials are received.
-5 digital images on CD (7 inches maximum for longest dimension, 200 pixels/inch) do not send more than 5 images
-Images do not have to represent actual artwork that will be shown in the exhibition.

The Hillsborough Arts Council seeks submissions for a themed exhibition, “Traditional Crafts - Past and Present Perspectives: Quilts, Woodcraft and Basketry,” to be held in the HAC Gallery from October 28, 2011, to January 7, 2012. The show is envisioned to include quilts of varied sizes including standard and smaller-scale quilts. Examples of woodcraft items include furniture, bowls, pens and desk items.

VCUarts Department of Craft and Material Studies is seeking two qualified applicants for its Fountainhead Fellowship. The fellowship provides an opportunity for the strongest recent national MFA graduates to continue their studio practice in Richmond, Virginia. The recipients will gain valuable teaching experience and participate in a vital, progressive community of artists at Virginia Commonwealth University. The Fountainhead Fellowship is a project of the Department of Craft and Material Studies, in cooperation with Fountainhead Development, and the Windgate Foundation.

Eligibility:
- Artists working predominantly in one or more of the following five media areas (ceramics, glass, fiber, metal or wood) in new and innovative ways, and possessing a strong foundation and understanding of their chosen material are eligible and strongly encouraged to apply.

- All MFA students who have graduated within the last 5 years in the US are invited to apply. VCU students and graduates are not eligible to apply.

The fellowship runs in August 1st - May 31st.

Fellows receive:
- 24 hour access to studio space
- A shared apartment at the New Manchester Flats
- $15,000 annual stipend
- Teaching experience at VCU
- An exhibition at a Richmond venue
- 24 hour access to VCU facilities in your area of focus

Fellowship responsibilities:
- Teach up to two classes per semester in the Department of Craft and Materials Studies. This requires 2-4 days per week for two semesters.

FANTASTIC FIBERS is an international competitive exhibition that seeks to showcase a wide range of outstanding works related to the fiber medium. In three years Fantastic Fibers has grown to a truly international competition/exhibition.

Specifications
Contemporary and innovative works created with fiber as the primary medium are welcome. This exhibition is open to all professional artists 18 years and over working in the field of fiber art. All work submitted must be original, completed in the last three years and not previously exhibited in a Fantastic Fibers exhibition. There are no size restrictions.

Eligibility
Open to all fiber artists. Employees, staff, board and committee members of the Yeiser Art Center, and employees of Paducah Printing and Horizon Media Group are ineligible.

Entering
Entries are now submitted solely online. If one or more of your entries should be accepted into the show you will receive subsequent instructions on final presentation.

No more than five entries may be submitted by any artist. A nonrefundable entry fee of $10 is required for each entry submitted for consideration.

AWARDS
A minimum of $1,750 in cash awards will be given by the jurors. Awards will be made in the following amounts:

•First Place $1,000
•Second Place $500
•Third Place $250

2011 Jurors

Freda Fairchild is a multi media artist and her work is shown nationally and internationally. She works primarily in printmaking and fiber, frequently combining the two techniques.

Caryl Bryer Fallert is internationally recognized for her award-winning art quilts, which have appeared in hundreds of national and international exhibitions, collections, and publications.

Judy Schwender is the Curator of Collections and Registrar at the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, KY. She is a member of the American Quilt Study Group and is currently a Board member.

Without deviating from our intended course, World Textile Art (WTA) is working relentlessly towards a stronger promotion of any shape, content, and form of contemporary textile art.

The challenge that WTA has, is a major one – to open an unexplored path that ties its recurrent promotions of textile art to an adequate bridge that benefits, contemporary artistic creativities on the American continents as for the rest of the world.

Each WTA Biennial takes on characteristics and idiosyncrasies of its host country, for which no two are alike. The VI International Biennial of Contemporary Textile Art WTA – AIR will have unique qualities corresponding to Mexico, a land where textile activity is extended throughout its regions. Ancestral traditions vie for coexistence amidst the clashes wrought by imposed globalized contemporaneity.

Mexico is the land of Quetzalcoatl, the plumed serpent. And like this mythic creature that brings wisdom and creativity to Mesoamerican peoples, the VI International Biennial of Contemporary Textile Art WTA –AIR will thread a serpentine path through the country. It will span three cities – Mexico City, Xalapa and Oaxaca – as the Biennial events occur in stages in the distinct venues. Each one will be memorable and unique.

The VI International Biennial of Contemporary Textile Art WTA –AIR will integrate different media which are part of the contemporary arts and of textiles. It carries this precept from the previous Biennial: the challenge to resignify the very concept of ‘textile art’ - strengthening the different investigations that hybridize explorations and question categories while maintaining textiles as the integrating concept.

Yet the VI International Biennial of Contemporary Textile Art WTA – AIR strives to open up even more spaces for participation. Six different Calls for Entries to the six distinct Textile Art Salons are in accord with different ways of expressing and working through textiles – be it by size, type of work, technique, concept or media. Accessible to every interested artist, projects do not compete with different types of works, but are placed in their own category, amidst peers.
