EXCITE--An Exhibit of Contemporary Textiles & Fiber Art, Local Cloth Inc.
Deadline: August 10, 2014 (ONLINE)
EXCITE
--An Exhibit of Contemporary Textiles & Fiber Art
Local Cloth Inc. AND
Haywood Community College Creative Arts Program
Swannanoa, NC
October 9 – December 6, 2014
Local Cloth Inc. and the Haywood Community College Creative Arts Program invite fiber and textile artists to join their celebration of American Craft Week 2014 by entering EXCITE, which recognizes the Appalachian region’s tradition and continuing leadership in weaving and contemporary textile art education.
EXHIBITION THEME
The theme is contemporary fiber work inspired or reflective of the design ideals set forth by Anni Albers at Black Mountain College, where she formed and taught the weaving program. This could include decorative fiber works inspired by her writings or textiles, or the unique design concepts that flourished at the alternative educational experience that was Black Mountain College from 1933-1957 in Western North Carolina.
In keeping with the mission of Local Cloth to support and sustain the regional fiber and textile arts economy and professions through collaboration, education and innovation, the work must include some material(s) or resources obtained within a 100-mile radius of the artwork’s origination. For example, a work may include fiber or yarn sourced from a local farm, spun by a local mill or dyed with local materials; cloth woven, felted, knitted, crocheted, dyed, printed, repurposed or otherwise created by another local artisan; or artisan skills sourced locally to enhance or embellish the work.
Considering the emphasis on, and experimentation with, materials that guided Anni Albers’ weaving, this combination of requirements is a natural extension of her brilliance, yet is reflective of the contemporary mindset.
JURY CRITERIA: Entries will be juried upon a work’s embodiment of the theme; creativity in using local resources; and excellence in design and craftsmanship. A list of available local resources for artists within the Local Cloth region will be available at http://www.localcloth.org/. Artists from outside the Local Cloth fiber shed are encouraged to research available resources within their own 100-mile fiber sheds.
ELIGIBILITY: Student, amateur and professional textile and fiber artists from throughout the United States. Work must have been completed after Dec. 1, 2013.
ENTRY FEE: $40 includes two entries to be judged independently, and one-year membership in Local Cloth Inc. Paid members of Local Cloth Inc. may request a discount code, reducing the entry fee to $15 for two entries.
