Celebrating African Grandmothers

Deadline: March 1, 2013 (RECEIVE) or (HAND DELIVERY)

Celebrating African Grandmothers
Royal City Gogos

New Westminster, BC
May 2013 – Feb. 28 2014

Celebrating African Grandmothers, heroes of the continent, is a juried exhibition. Artists are invited to celebrate African grandmothers in sculpture, print-making, painting, photo manipulation, collage, fibre and textile art -- any art form that can be hung on the wall. Interpretations of the themes will range from traditional to abstract and conceptual and may appeal to a a variety of audiences from art collectors to children.

Royal City Gogos are part of a nation-wide movement of +5,000 grandmothers and grand-others who contribute to the Grandmothers Campaign of the Stephen Lewis Foundation. We fund raise in support of African grandmothers caring for a generation of children who have been orphaned by the AIDS pandemic. These children are the future hope of Africa. To date, the Grandmothers Campaign has raised +$16.5 million.

Exhibition History: ‘Celebrating’ is the third in a series of art exhibitions to be hosted by grandmother groups in western Canada. The first two exhibits were limited to textile art and raised +$200,000 for the Grandmothers Campaign. They toured from Comox to Winnipeg and thousands of visitors attended.

Benefits to artists:

  • Artists may choose to receive 50% of auction price or donate their work. Tax receipts will be given, on request, for the 50% price.
  • Closed bids accepted throughout the tour will form the starting price for the gala auction
  • Exposure in over 20 markets across Western Canada from May 2013 – Feb. 28 2014
  • Hosting groups will actively advertise the exhibit to audiences in their areas ensuring widespread exposure
  • Attendance of over 500 people expected at each hosted event
  • Gallery of artwork on our website throughout the tour and beyond
  • Links to artist websites throughout the tour and beyond
  • Sheryl Mackay of CBC radio’s North by Northwest will do interviews and host the gala finale
  • Artists will be associated with a compelling story creating positive social change

Because we are limited to exhibiting approximately 50 works, other donated work that is not accepted by the jury will be gratefully received and sold during the exhibition tour.

We anticipate a vibrant and inspired exhibition that celebrates the extraordinary resolve of African grandmothers and the talent and generosity within the arts community.

Themes to interpret in Celebrating African Grandmothers:
  1. Heroes of the Continent
  2. Loss
  3. Compassion
  4. Resilience
  5. Sisterhood
  6. Strength in Community
  7. Advocacy in Africa
  8. Turning the Tide of AIDS
  9. Hope at the Grassroots
