The Center for Art in Wood, in Philadelphia, PA, US, is partnering with The Furniture Society to organize an exhibition that showcases contemporary seating. The jurors will consider chairs, stools, and benches of all kinds — functional, sculptural and conceptual. Pieces submitted for consideration should be produced since 2000 and have a basis in wood either in actual practice or theory. All media will be considered.

Artists are encouraged to imagine, dream, and experiment. Collaborations are welcome, as are videos, installations, and performances. The concept of seating should be pondered and dissected with an eye toward the needs and the nature of the 21st century.

The exhibition will run May 1–July 23, 2016 at The Center for Art in Wood, concurrent with The Furniture Society’s annual conference, which meets next year in Philadelphia. Selected works will be included in an accompanying full color publication and must be available for the length of the show. All makers will be notified in advance if a national tour can be organized.


JURORS
Nicholas R. Bell, the Fleur and Charles Bresler Senior Curator of American Craft and Decorative Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, with research interests in American craft, decorative art in America from the 17th–21st centuries, folk and self-taught art, and theories of material culture.

Ben Colman, Assistant Curator, Florence Griswold Museum, where his focus is the history of American painting, decorative arts and craft.

Hank Gilpin, full-time furniture maker, interior designer, and landscape designer

Susie Silbert, New York based curator, writer, and historian with a background in craft and design

Figurative art is more than ever at the forefront of contemporary art practice and is always a subject of debate. The Threadneedle Prize deliberately sets out to examine Figurative Art Today, producing a comprehensive current survey.

The Threadneedle Prize winner will receive a cash prize of £20,000 plus his or her own one-week exhibition at Mall Galleries in 2015 (value £10,000). Each of the five other shortlisted artists will receive £1,000; every work selected for the exhibition is eligible to win the Visitors’ Choice Award, a further prize of £10,000 voted by visitors to the exhibition.

WHO CAN SUBMIT

Artists of any nationality, aged 18 or over on 1 January 2014, presently living or working in the UK or Europe (except employees of the Federation of British Artists and Threadneedle, and their agents). Previous prizewinners may also submit up to five works, but they are not eligible to win the same prize for a period of three years.


WHAT TO SUBMIT (truncated)

• You can submit paintings, drawings, original prints, sculpture, mixed media constructions, small scale installations and reliefs. Artists are encouraged to submit fresh and intriguing works that are strong and topical observations or interpretations on the world around us. We only accept photography and video entries where they form part of a mixed media installation.
• You may enter a maximum of FIVE works. These must have been completed after 1 January 2013; however they must not have been exhibited in any other prize or competition in the UK or elsewhere.
• Cost to enter is £12 per work (including VAT), which is non-refundable. Artist members of the FBA and full-time students pay a reduced entry fee of £10 per work.
• All works must be for sale. The Threadneedle Prize is not just a major showcase for exciting new figurative art, it is also a significant opportunity for collectors and dealers to discover and purchase your work.
• You may submit work to The Threadneedle Prize if you are resident in Europe and are not normally resident in the UK. However, you must have a UK VAT registration number or intend to secure a UK VAT registration number before your work(s) can be sold at The Threadneedle Prize exhibition.
• The price of works should include an allowance for the Mall Galleries’ commission of 45% (plus VAT). If you are registered for VAT, then the VAT due on the selling price of the work should be included in the price.
• Size restrictions: Works cannot be larger than 2.4 metres along the longest dimension.

Competition Rules: (truncated)

• Selection of quilts:
- All techniques are accepted, as long as they match the fundamental structural characteristics of a quilt (3 layers).
- Compulsory dimension: 100 x 100 cm. (40" x 40")
- The quilt must be original or must give credit to the source of inspiration.
- The quilt must have been made in 2011/2012 – and must not have been exhibited in any major exhibition, published in a catalogue, a book or a magazine prior to entering the competition.
- The quilt must have an 8 cm (3"1/4) deep casing sewn securely to the upper edge of the back. It should begin and end approximately 3,5 cm (1"1/4) from the side edges. The quilt must have a fabric label with the maker’s name, address, phone, title and dimensions sewn to the lower right corner on the back of ther work.
- As the selected works will be travelling for a whole year (2012-2013), they need to be easily transportable; please avoid too fragile embellishments or material.
- There is a possibility to enter 2 works, knowing that only one will be selected. Please fill one entry form per quilt.

• Selection - Only via digital pictures

• All selected quilts will be published in the 18th edition of the “Catalogue Prestige”

• Jury:
- The selection will be made by an international jury, designated by the organizers.
- The jury’s decisions are final. The jury reserves the right to refuse any work that does not match the visuals submitted previously.
- The jury’s selection criteria are as follows: relevance to the theme, composition, technical quality and originality.

• Selling your quilt:
- You may choose to sell your quilt.
- If your quilt is sold, you will return 20% of the sale price to the organizers

• Travelling:
- The selected quilts will be exhibited in other venues in France and abroad under the responsibility of the organizers. They will be returned to the makers after the 19th European Patchwork Meeting, in 2013.

• Prize:
“Best of” awarded by the European Patchwork Meeting: 3 000 €
And many other prizes for a total of more than 7 000 €

2012 Exhibition Season


Paradise Center for the Arts is seeking submissions of recent work from visual artists for exhibitions in the Carlander Family Gallery and the Lois Vranesh Boardroom Gallery for 2012. Submissions will be juried by members of the gallery committee of the Paradise Center for the Arts, which is comprised of artists, arts professionals, and art enthusiasts in the area.

Submissions will be accepted any time before July 3, 2011 and final notification of the committee’s decision will be no later than August 30, 2011. Early submissions are encouraged.

Submit: 6-10 images of recent work in JPEG format not to exceed 20 MB. Resume and Artist statement.

Commission split is 40 /60 for nonmembers, 30/70 for members.
