Shifts and Strands: Rethinking the Possibilities and Potentials of Textiles Symposium 2024

DEADLINE: March 30, 2024 (ONLINE)

Shifts and Strands: Rethinking the Possibilities and Potentials of Textiles
Symposium 2024
Modality: Virtual on Zoom
November 12-17, 2024

TSA is accepting proposals for individual presentations, chaired sessions, panel discussions and roundtable conversations, and “warp speed” and poster sessions. TSA is also accepting proposals for sessions that do not fall under one of these categories. Individuals may submit more than one proposal (for example, a proposal to chair a session and present an individual paper, etc.)

Presenters will be asked to upload an abstract or description of their proposed presentation or session; to describe how their presentation or session relates to the Symposium theme, and to select one or two Symposium sub-themes that best relate to their proposal. There is a field to let TSA know more about your interests in the proposed topic.

Submission of a proposal to the Symposium implies that presenters intend to register for the Symposium and participate in the capacity proposed (individual presenter, session chair, moderator, etc.). TSA will publish the abstract on the TSA website, the Symposium digital platform and app, and in publications including, but not limited to, the Symposium Program and Proceedings. Sessions will be recorded and made available to registered Symposium participants for 90 days after the Symposium.

Call for Papers: Textile Society of America’s 15th Biennial Symposium

Deadline: October 1, 2015 {ONLINE}

Call for Papers
Crosscurrents: Land, Labor, and the Port
Textile Society of America’s 15th Biennial Symposium

Organized in collaboration with Savannah College of Art and Design
Savannah, Georgia
October 19th – 23rd, 2016

The theme of TSA’s 15th Biennial Symposium is Crosscurrents: Land, Labor, and the Port. We invite participants to explore the ways in which textiles shape, and are shaped by historical, geographical, technological and economic aspects of colonialization and/or globalization. How and why have textile practices moved around? As they travel, how have they been translated, modified, or used within acts of compliance or resistance? What impact have different regimes of labor, consumption, aesthetic valuation, or political/social economy had on textile production, use, and circulation? These questions may apply to contemporary or historical fine art, utilitarian, or ethnographic textiles, which may be addressed through scholarship or creative practice.

Due to its location and history, the southern United States is an ideal place to examine the interaction between local practices and global markets. We encourage contributions that explore textile practice in the broader contexts of agriculture, labor, innovation, or exchange. We welcome historic or contemporary perspectives on the role of technology and alternative economies in shaping design, production, circulation, consumption, exhibition, collection, valuation, interpretation and use of textiles.

TSA seeks presentation proposals from all textile-related disciplines and interdisciplinary areas, including but not limited to history, anthropology, archaeology, art, conservation, geography, design, economics, ethnic studies, history, linguistics, marketing, material culture studies, mathematics, science, political science, sociology, and theater, among others. Participation of international and U.S. scholars, researchers, artists, curators, museum professionals, and others is welcome. Submission of abstracts is open to TSA members. Non-member applicants may join TSA at the time of proposal submission. Selected presenters will also be required to have an active membership at the time of the Symposium (October 2016).

In addition to our usual submission categories (papers, organized sessions, roundtables, films and other media), we are extending a call for poster sessions and for curated exhibitions. The review committee will select submissions that cogently and directly address the theme of the symposium.

All submissions should be based on original research, reflecting material not previously published. In submitting an abstract, the author explicitly authorizes its use on the TSA website and in publications including, but not limited to, the Symposium Program and Proceedings.

Individuals may complete multiple submissions.

All submissions must be made online: https://textilesociety.submittable.com/submit

Textile Society Call for Papers

Deadline: January 31, 2015 {EMAIL}

Call for Papers
Textile Society
Research Symposium

Wellcome Conference Centre
London, England
28th March 2015

The Textile Society is keen to capture the essence of current research activity in the UK. Our first two research symposia in March 2011 and March 2013 were both outstandingly successful. We heard a diverse range of presentations from researchers across the globe who represented many aspects of textiles. Those who attended, whether as members of the audience or as presenters, were very animated by the experience. We received an unprecedented volume of thanks for organising these important events.

To celebrate, encourage, explore and support on-going research into textiles in all their diversity the Society is funding its third research symposium. We are doing so in order that researchers, would-be researchers and anyone interested to know more about what is happening can get together, create links, encourage debate and share information at a central location.

Textiles: New Research Strategies III
Saturday 28th March 2015, Wellcome Conference Centre, Euston Road, London (opposite Euston mainline station) Saturday, 28 March 2015.

If you want to take part and are willing to present a short, sharp 15-minute overview of your research strategies, please contact either Dr Brenda King, Chair of The Textile Society or Dr Lynn Hulse, Editor of TEXT with an outline of your work by 31st January 2015. The abstract should by a maximum of 300 words.

Deadline: October 1, 2011(RECEIVE)

Abstract Submission
The 13th Biennial Symposium
Textile Society of America

Washington, DC
September 19-22, 2012

The 13th Biennial Symposium of the Textile Society of America will take place in Washington, DC September 19-22, 2012. The theme of Textiles & Politics befits the symposium venue in the U.S. capital and will generate lively discussion about the myriad ways in which textiles pervade our lives.

Throughout human history and around the globe, whether as intimate artifacts of interpersonal relations or state-level monumental works, textiles have been imbued with political importance. Political influences on textiles range from complex international trade agreements to the simple yet powerful act of banners carried in street parades and protests.

Textiles & Politics will explore the ways in which politics influence the aesthetics, production, materials, uses, and countless other aspects of textiles (and vice versa).

We seek presentations from all textile-related disciplines and interdisciplinary areas, including but not limited to anthropology, art, art history, conservation, cultural geography, design, economics, ethnic studies, history, linguistics, marketing, mathematics, political science, and theater. TSA encourages both organized sessions and individual papers from scholars, researchers, artists, gallery and museum professionals, and aficionados from around the world.

TSA Membership Requirement
All persons submitting proposals for participation in the 2012 symposium must be TSA members in good standing for 2011 at the time of submission. Non-member applicants may join TSA at the time of proposal submission. If extenuating circumstances exist, please write to the Symposium Planning Committee at tsa2012symposium@gmail.com.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
All submissions should be based on original research, reflecting material not previously published. In submitting an abstract, the author explicitly authorizes its use on the TSA website and in the published Symposium Program and Proceedings.

• History of dance costume for professional performance: theatre, ballet, cinema, etc.
• Dress for traditional and ceremonial dance: costume as expressions of cultures
• Fashion and popular dance: the relationship between popular music, new styles of dance and fashionable dress, past and present
• Creating dance costume: designers, artists, artisans, stylists, tailors, seamstresses using traditional, experimental and/or contemporary materials and techniques

Book Art Biennial 2009

Unspecified (as of this posting--will update when announced)

Book Art Biennial 2009

Mature Content-The Artist's Book as Advocate
Minnesota Center for Book Arts
Minneapolis, MN
July 23-26, 2009

The strength of an artist's book lies not only in the marriage of form and craftsmanship, but also in well-developed content.

Through a combination of presentations by leaders in the field, peer discussion sessions and hands-on workshops, Book Art Biennial participants will explore the theme Mature Content — the Artist's Book as Advocate, placing special emphasis on the
efficacy of artists' books as agents of social change and activism.

KEYNOTE ADDRESSES
For over four decades, artist and Arizona State University professor John Risseeuw's work has touched on political and social themes, including political corruption, equal rights, fascism, illegal wars and arms proliferation. In classics like Civil Defense (1983) and High Tension (1993), artist and University of Arizona professor Philip Zimmermann has explored issues relating to national security, environmental safety and social anxiety. Through compelling content and unique creative approaches, both offer distinctive perspectives on the role of art as an agent of social change.

PANELISTS
Through a variety of panels and presentations, participants will explore contemporary issues in the book arts. Panelists include artist and Oregon College of Art and Craft professor Inge Bruggeman; artist and University of Iowa Center for the Book professor Emily Martin; artist, designer and educator Scott McCarney; Wellesley College Special Collections Librarian Ruth Rogers; Minneapolis College of Art and Design Fine Arts Chair Karen Wirth; and other leaders in the field.

WORKSHOPS
Discover innovative practices and hone traditional skills by working with master artists including Inge Bruggeman, Daniel Essig, Scott McCarney and John Risseeuw.

THE MCBA PRIZE [link to FACFE post]
A centerpiece of the Book Art Biennial is the presentation of The MCBA Prize. This new award is the first in the United States to recognize book art from across the field and around the world. The MCBA Prize celebrates the diversity of book art and encourages discussion rather than limiting recognition to one aspect of this vital field. A distinguished panel of jurors, themselves leaders in the field, will select five finalists, with the announcement of the winning work at a gala event culminating Book Art Biennial 2009. For further details, submission guidelines and entry forms for The MCBA Prize, download the prospectus.

REGISTRATION
Registration materials for Book Art Biennial 2009 will be available on the Minnesota Center for Book Arts website beginning January 1, 2009. For questions regarding Book Art Biennial 2009 or The MCBA Prize, contact MCBA Artistic Director Jeff Rathermel at jrathermel@mnbookarts.org.

The future cultural centre will include a textile museum, a wool processing workshop, and will also house Haslach Textile Culture, an association that organises major textile gatherings annually, offering courses, exhibitions, symposia, and a weavers’ market.

Actions to be discussed and finalised include the following:
