Shifts and Strands: Rethinking the Possibilities and Potentials of Textiles Symposium 2024

DEADLINE: March 30, 2024 (ONLINE)

Shifts and Strands: Rethinking the Possibilities and Potentials of Textiles
Symposium 2024
Modality: Virtual on Zoom
November 12-17, 2024

TSA is accepting proposals for individual presentations, chaired sessions, panel discussions and roundtable conversations, and “warp speed” and poster sessions. TSA is also accepting proposals for sessions that do not fall under one of these categories. Individuals may submit more than one proposal (for example, a proposal to chair a session and present an individual paper, etc.)

Presenters will be asked to upload an abstract or description of their proposed presentation or session; to describe how their presentation or session relates to the Symposium theme, and to select one or two Symposium sub-themes that best relate to their proposal. There is a field to let TSA know more about your interests in the proposed topic.

Submission of a proposal to the Symposium implies that presenters intend to register for the Symposium and participate in the capacity proposed (individual presenter, session chair, moderator, etc.). TSA will publish the abstract on the TSA website, the Symposium digital platform and app, and in publications including, but not limited to, the Symposium Program and Proceedings. Sessions will be recorded and made available to registered Symposium participants for 90 days after the Symposium.

Artspace: Regional Emerging Artist-in-Residence

Two Deadlines: {ONLINE} or {RECEIVE}

October 6, 2014 (January – July 2015 Residency)
March 30, 2015 (July 2015 – January 2016 Residency)

Regional Emerging Artist-in-Residence

Artspace
Raleigh, NC
2015/2016 Residency

Established in January 2000, the Regional Emerging Artist Residency provides emerging visual artists with time and space to explore their work in a supportive, thriving, artistic environment at Artspace. Two artists in their early professional careers are chosen from a regional pool of applicants every six months.

The residency includes a private, rent-free studio with 24-hour access. Artspace does NOT provide transportation or living quarters.

Each month residents are presented to the Triangle community during Artspace’s opening receptions and gallery walks. A fully supported exhibition of the resident’s work will be presented in the Artspace lobby after the residency.

The primary focus of the program is to provide an artist with time for independent work, but some participation in Artspace programs is expected. During the residency, artists must contribute to Artspace’s educational programs and tours by working in their studios during business hours, especially during scheduled tours. Resident artists will also be expected to give a presentation, talk, and/or demonstration to the public during their exhibition or 6-month residency.

ELIGIBILITY

1. Artspace’s Emerging Artist Residencies are available to promising artists in their formative years committed to advancing their own work and professional careers.

2. Artists must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents over 18 years of age and must currently reside in the Southeast (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia).

3. Artists working in most mediums will be considered, including experimental media; however, artists working with toxic materials, hazardous machinery, etc. will not be considered due to limitations within the building.

4. Artists must not be enrolled in an institutional program of study, including instructional museum programs, during the residency period. (Applicants may be in school during application process.)

5. Artists must be ready to enjoy working in an open studio setting where the public is able to interact with the artist during public hours. Artists must work in the studio a minimum of 15 hours per week during public hours.

Mendocino Art Center: 2012/13 Artist Residency

Deadline: March 30, 2012 (RECEIVE)

2012/13 Artist Residency
Mendocino Art Center

Mendocino, CA
September 10, 2012 through May 18, 2013

The Mendocino Art Center offers an Artist in Residence program each year with residencies in ceramics, painting, jewelry/metalsmithing, sculpture and fiber arts. The program offers the working artist and craftsperson, emerging or established, a welcome retreat from the usual routine of everyday life and a chance to develop a body of work, while striving for personal and artistic growth.

The AIR program provides a community-based environment that facilitates both educational and individual artistic growth at the Mendocino Art Center (MAC).

The AIR program, now in its 51st year, was developed to bring emerging and established studio artists to this unique Northern California region to provide both time and space to develop their work. The 2012/13 residency year is September 10, 2012 through May 18, 2013.

We encourage our artists to pursue endeavors beyond the studio by seeking out group and solo exhibitions here on the coast and abroad.

Qualifications:
The program welcomes self-motivated, focused individuals working in traditional and nontraditional studio arts. Applicants should hold a BA, BFA, MFA, or life equivalency representing an established foundation of knowledge and body of work in their respective discipline. The primary basis for selection is the strength and quality of the applicants' work.

Residents must also have a clear objective for the time of their residency and be willing to live and work as part of a close-knit community. A successful residency depends in part on expectations consistent with what MAC has to offer.

Studios
The Art Center has three studios dedicated to Fine Arts, an etching press, a jewelry and metalsmithing studio, two studios dedicated to textiles (including a weaving room), two for ceramics, electric, gas, atmospheric and wood fired kilns and a small foundry. Studio space is usually shared with other artists. Residents will be responsible for materials and fuel consumption based on departmental pricings. A facilities fee is paid monthly that is regulated by specific studios and the equipment associated with them.

Housing
Residents will live on MAC grounds for the nine-month residency in a furnished apartment provided by MAC. We currently do not allow pets on the grounds.

Residents are allowed to re-apply for a second residency and, if selected, will honor a four-year grace period before applying thereafter.

$25 application fee

Applications for Artist in Residence are received and reviewed by the department directors/coordinators, and then by the Residency Committee.
The committee also determines which applicants are accepted for the AIR program.
