At Modern Patchwork® we celebrate the modern quilt movement in all its glory.
We are looking for distinctive and unpublished original projects to suit every room of the house.
The following is our “wish list” for the upcoming issue. You are not limited to the following, but we encourage you to submit projects that fall within these guidelines:
· Modern quilts of all shapes and sizes: bed quilts, wall quilts, lap quilts, throws, beach blankets, and mini quilts
· Kitchen & Dining: pot holders, dishtowels, aprons, recipe book covers, quilted seat cushions, place mats, mug rugs, napkins and napkin rings, runners, and coasters
· Sewing studio accessories: pincushions, needle books, wall décor, and sewing machine covers
· Living room décor: pillows, photo frames, lampshades, fabric clocks, bookmarks, book covers, and rugs
· Items for baby and beyond: stuffed animals, diaper bags, toys, mobiles, play mats, bibs, and baby quilts
· Bags of all sorts: tote bags, messenger bags, yoga totes, lunch bags, clutches, and accessory bags
· Items to take on the go: key fobs, car accessories, coffee cup covers, wallets, luggage tags, and picnic blankets
· Pet accessories: leash and collar sets, dog and cat toys, and pet jackets and beds
· Tech accessories: camera straps, mouse pads, camera cases, and covers for computers, tablets, and iPads
Feature article submissions
We accept queries for feature articles on timely topics related to sewing, modern quilting design, and textiles. To submit a feature proposal, send a detailed outline of your proposal and any related images, websites, or resources illustrating the topic as well as a few writing samples. The query should give an overview of what you are proposing with enough details and supporting information for us to carefully consider your idea. Feature articles are 1,000 to 1,500 words.

Keyholder Residency
A program that provides concentrated work time for artists to explore new ideas in one of Pyramid Atlantic's studio disciplines.
Pyramid Atlantic is proud to offer a three month residency opportunity for artists working in the field of printmaking, papermaking or book arts (or combination of). Artists of all career stages are encouraged to apply for this residency. Two artists per session are selected by Pyramid Atlantic’s artistic staff. Resident artists work in a productive community atmosphere alongside other artists, and are expected to be in the studio at least 15-20 hours per week. Technical assistance is not included in the residency, but is available at an additional cost.
Keyholder Resident Artists receive:
•A $200 artist’s stipend
•24-hour studio access
•Storage space
•Inclusion in Pyramid Atlantic’s permanent collection
•Promotion through Pyramid’s e-newsletter, blog and website
Keyholder Resident Artists are expected to:
•Care for equipment and tools
•Provide their own consumable supplies (paper, ink, newsprint, and the like)
•Give one artist’s talk or public demonstration
•Share the studio with other artists; working around workshops and outreach

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellowship Program is a vital source of funding for the visual arts and art history in Virginia. VMFA is committed to supporting professional artists as well as art and art history students who demonstrate exceptional creative ability in their chosen discipline and has awarded nearly $5 million in fellowships to Virginians.

Fellowship applicants’ works are reviewed in a blind selection by distinguished jurors. The juror(s) views each applicant’s work sample and may request to read the applicant’s artist statement. The juror(s) does not see the applicant’s resume; selections are made anonymously and solely based on artistic merit.

$8,000 Professional Fellowships
$6,000 Graduate Fellowships
$4,000 Undergraduate Fellowships
Awards are made to those applicants of the highest artistic merit and are not based on medium.
Applicants may submit only one application for the annual Fellowship cycle. Applicants may apply for work or study in only one of the disciplines below:
• Crafts
• Drawing
• Film/Video*
• Mixed Media**
• New/Emerging Media***
• Painting
• Photography
• Printmaking
• Sculpture
• Art History (graduate students only)
*Film/video applicants may submit personally conceived works in the following categories only: Narrative (fiction, dramatized events, and authorized adaptations of literary or dramatic works), Animation (the animation of graphics or three-dimensional objects), and Experimental (works that expand the traditional definition of film or video forms — live-action or animation techniques can be used). Only noncommercial, noninstructional works over which the applicant has exclusive control and primary creative responsibility will be accepted. No music videos will be considered.
**Mixed media refers to the combination of two or more media to create one work.
***New/Emerging Media refers to works of art made using non-traditional techniques that do not fit into one of the other eight disciplines listed. Examples of New/Emerging Media art could be, but are not limited to, combined media installations, environmental or site-specific artwork, digital artwork, sound or audio artwork, or interactive artwork. New/Emerging Media applicants may choose to submit digital images OR a DVD work sample. See “How to Apply” for more information.
