Rug Hooking Magazine Call for Submissions

Deadline: (ONGOING/UNSPECIFIED)

Call for Submissions
Rug Hooking Magazine

Mechanicsburg, PA

Rug Hooking magazine is published 5 times per year, and is available in some book and craft stores, and by subscription. Our goal is to provide high quality articles and photographs about the art and craft of rug hooking, and how-to articles on techniques and projects. Rug Hooking readers are passionate about rug hooking, and they value informative articles about the craft and the people involved in the field. They also enjoy the high quality projects that they find in our magazine.

If you are not familiar with RHM and the types of articles we publish, we suggest that you read a few issues to get a sense of the magazine. We ask that any article you submit has not appeared in any other publication. If it has, please let us know where and when it appeared in print.

Submissions

Feature articles: We invite you to submit articles for features. Please send us the complete manuscript with accompanying photographs, diagrams, or other supporting materials. Features vary in length from 1800 words to 3200 words, depending on the topic. Features require three to twelve photographs (or visuals). Feature articles should also include the following sidebar information (if appropriate):

Materials list
Reference resources
Tips and techniques
All information on rugs shown in photographs, per the standard RHM caption

Departments: RHM has several regular departments, focusing on techniques, projects, and people. Review back issues to decide which department might best accommodate your article, and pay attention to how the article is structured. We invite submissions of project plans for step-by-step and how-to articles. These projects should display expertise in techniques and design, and be of high quality so that other hookers will be enticed to complete them for themselves or for gifts.

General information:

Issues are planned six to twelve months in advance.

Be sure to mark all materials with your name and complete mailing address, telephone number, and e-mail address.

We will acknowledge receipt of your materials, though we may not be able to determine right away if we can use it. Please be patient. Unsolicited articles are used on an as-needed basis, dependent on many factors, including space in each issue.

Photography requirements: high resolution, at least 300 dpi, large files. Do not edit the photographs yourself; our art department will edit, crop, and adjust as needed for the magazine.

When your article is accepted, we will send a contract setting out specific requirements, asking for adjustments or additions if any are needed, and setting forth the payment (or ad exchange offer) for the article. Payment varies, depending on the length and complication of each article. All payments are made in U.S. currency upon publication.

Celebration of Hand-Hooked Rugs XXIV

Deadline: November 30, 2013 (ONLINE) or (POSTMARK)

Celebration of Hand-Hooked Rugs XXIV
Rug Hooking Magazine

Stackpole Magazines
Mechanicsburg, PA
August 2014

Calling all rug hookers! We invite you to enter your best hooked piece completed in 2012 or 2013 in Celebration of Hand-Hooked Rugs XXIV. We welcome all styles and sizes, from primitive to fine shading, from traditional to contemporary. The deadline for entries is November 30, 2013.

Entries are impartially and anonymously evaluated by a panel of four qualified judges from the rug hooking community. Rugs are judged on technique, color plan, and interpretation of design. Each rug is judged on a numerical scale on its own merit, independent of all other entries. Finalists will be featured in Celebration XXIV, published in August 2014. Celebration highlights the artistry, fine craftsmanship, and astonishing diversity of hand-hooked rugs produced in the past year. Readers are invited to vote for their favorite pieces, which will be featured as Readers' Choice winners in RHM next summer.

How to Enter

1. Limit of one (1) entry per person.

2. Enter online. Follow the instructions for electronic submissions.

3. Or complete the entry form and follow the instructions on page 11 of the Sept/Oct 2013 issue. Entries must be postmarked by November 30, 2013.

4. If you include an e-mail address with your entry, you will receive an e-mail confirmation when your entry is received. If you do not have e-mail, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope for receipt confirmation.

5. The rug must have been completed in 2012 or 2013, regardless of when you started it. You may enter a rug that has been entered in other competitions, and group entries are permissible.

6. Submission of an entry serves as a release that Rug Hooking and its publisher may publish photographs of the rug in the future, with proper credit given to the artist. This may include promotional materials, online or in print, including the Celebration book, in RHM, and on RHM products.

Category Definitions

Note: Some rugs may not fall neatly into one category. Use your judgement to select the category that best represents your rug.
  • Primitive: If your rug is a primitive rug, you may enter it in this category INSTEAD of one of the other three categories. Primitive suggests simplicity in all areas: design, materials, and technique. It usually means wider cut, naive or simple design with little or no shading, exaggerated scale or unrealistic proportion. Think folk art. In a pictorial rug, think Grandma Moses.
  • Commercial: If you purchased the pattern, enter the rug in the commercial category, Even if you adapted the pattern, if the rug is substantially based on a commercial pattern and design, it is a commercial rug.
  • Adaptation: If your rug is inspired by someone else's design in a different medium (for example, a painting, a postcard, a photograph, etc.) it is an adaptation. Be sure to credit the original inspiration and provide written documentation that you have permission to adapt someone else's work in this way. If you submit online, e-mail documentation to cderr@stackpolebooks.com.
  • Original: If your rug is based on your original content and design idea, it is an original design. Carefully consider who owns the copyright; if you hook a design based on a photograph that YOU took, the rug is your original design. If you hook a rug based on a photo that someone else took, that other person owns the copyright, and you should classify your rug as an adaptation.

JERSEY GIRL CHALLENGE

Deadline: April 1, 2009 (RECEIVE)

JERSEY GIRL CHALLENGE

Alice Beatty Chapter of ATHA
Oldwick, NJ
April 24 and Saturday, April 25, 2009

The members of the Alice Beatty Chapter of ATHA are putting out a challenge to all rug hookers to join the Jersey Girls in hooking rugs about New Jersey. These rugs will be featured at a show on Friday, April 24 and Saturday, April 25, 2009 in Oldwick, NJ. This schedule will give the artists time to design and complete a rug of a favorite New Jersey person, place or thing.

Guidelines:
  • This rug challenge is open to any and all rug hooking artists belonging to all rug hooking groups or those who may work independently.

  • There is no restriction on the size of rugs. All entries must have a rod pocket sewn onto the top of the backside of the rug.

  • Each artist may submit a total of three (3) rugs for exhibit.

  • A short paragraph should be written by the artist explaining the selection of their rug theme.

  • Theme must be in good taste and complimentary of the state of New Jersey.

  • Rugs are to be completed and ready for exhibition by March 2009.

New Jersey has countless areas that make the state appealing and unique. There is a long beautiful coastline for vacationing, all kinds of water sports, salt and fresh water fishing, agricultural and horse farms, mountains, lakes and almost anything you might find in other states and sometimes more. Island Beach State Park is an area left untouched and natural, much like it was when the Indians came to the seacoast to hunt and fish, so many years ago. You can find charming lighthouses, perfect little historical towns and one of our crown jewels, Cape May the nation’s first seaside resort.

So please come and join the Jersey Girls, have fun, create a new and exciting rug that celebrates the best of the Garden State.

All interested wishing to be included must register to receive additional information, as it becomes available, or answers to any questions regarding the challenge by contacting Norma Batastini at 973-746-2936 or Email: G_Batastini@msn.com and place Jersey Girl Rugs in the subject box.

Art Hits the Wall 2008

Deadline: July 30th 2008 (POSTMARK)

Art Hits the Wall 2008
Mary E. Black Gallery
Halifax, NS
October 24 to December 21 2008

Art Hits The Wall is a juried exhibition of unique quilted and hooked wall art created by residents of Atlantic Canada (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland). Art Hits the Wall 2008 theme: “All Nature Sings”

“All Nature Sings” ...... We all have experienced those special moments when nature “sang” to us. Let your memories of those treasured times or, whatever nature provides to take your breath away, be your inspiration and guide!

The Nova Scotia Centre for Craft and Design (NSCCD) is working with the Art Hits the Wall (AHW) committee. This is a juried show only - adherence to the criteria will be the limiting factors. The show will not be judged (i.e. no ribbons will be awarded).

There is no entry fee.

Entrants are not required to be members of any quilting or rug hooking group but should have an interest in the development and growth of their art form. Technique is important but will not be the defining quality. The work will be evaluated on its adherance to the prescribed criteria and its interpretive perspective.

The exhibition will be held at:
Mary E. Black Gallery
1061 Marginal Road
Halifax, NS. B3H 4P6
(next to Pier 21)
Official opening Thursday, October 23, 2008

Entry Requirements

  • Work submitted must have been created specifically for this show and this must be the first public showing of the work.

  • Only fully completed work will be accepted.

  • Work may be framed or bound and with a hidden sleeve attached across the back of the work if the artist considers it necessary.

  • Work can be signed. Also, securely fasten a label on the back of the work which includes the artist’s name, address and phone number and title of the work.

Work will not be advertised as being for sale. If you notify the gallery that you wish to sell your work they will keep the information on file and request that prospective buyers to contact you directly.

An artist may submit one piece of work per medium (i.e. one hooked piece and one quilted) but they must be entered on separate forms.

An artist’s statement can be included with entry.

If possible please send a digital image or photograph of the work with your entry form. (An image/photo of the incomplete piece will be acceptable.)
