Mendocino Art Center Artists in Residence Program

Deadline: April 10, 2015 {POSTMARK}

Artists in Residence Program
Mendocino Art Center

Mendocino, CA
October 1, 2015 to May 15, 2016

The Artists in Residence (AIR) program provides a community-based environment that facilitates both educational and individual artistic growth at the Mendocino Art Center (MAC).

The AIR program was developed to bring emerging and established artists to this unique Northern California region. It provides both time and space for AIRs to develop their work.

Qualifications:
The program welcomes self-motivated, focused individuals working in traditional or nontraditional studio arts, and independent creative endeavors, from mixed media to writing.

Applicants should hold a BA, BFA, MFA or life equivalency representing an established foundation of knowledge and body of work in their respective discipline. The primary basis for selection is the strength and quality of the applicant’s work.

Artist residents must also have a clear objective for the time of their residency and be willing to live and work as part of a close-knit community. A successful residency depends in part on expectations consistent with what MAC has to offer. Applicants with no prior connection to MAC are strongly encouraged to visit or take a class before applying for the program. It is also advised to contact the Coordinator specific to your studio practice or the Education Director for an independent type residency.

MAC Artists in Residence may re-apply for a second year residency.

Studios:
The Art Center has studios dedicated to Fine Art, Textiles, Ceramics (electric, gas, atmospheric and wood kilns) Jewelry, Sculpture/Blacksmithing and a small foundry. We welcome artists in other areas, including writing, music, photography and video. Depending on the field of endeavor and the number of AIRs, studio space may be shared with other artists. Residents will be responsible for purchase of their own materials and fuel consumption based on departmental pricings. Studio facilities fees are included in the monthly housing rates.

Application Fee: $30 non-refundable

Every year Manifest surveys work by students and recent graduates of art and design programs, seeking to assemble, promote, and document examples of the excellence being achieved by 'new' or emerging artists for Rites of Passage. For an eleventh straight year we offer this challenge to students and the recently graduated in regional, national, international college undergraduate programs to show us what you've achieved, bring it off campus, and share it with our international viewing public.

We believe there exists tremendous unexposed quality among people pursuing degrees in the visual arts. Revealing new artists is part of our non-profit mission!

This exhibit will feature the best work from artists about to receive or recently awarded an undergraduate degree from a regional, national, or international college art or design program. All entrants must have received or be scheduled to receive a college undergraduate degree in 2014, 2015, or 2016, and provide an academic reference’s contact info.

JURY AND CURATOR

“The felt of the shaman - on the footsteps of Joseph Beuys”

Felt artists and craftsm are invited to submit costumes, clothing accessories, wearable items for the event “The felt of the shaman - on the footsteps of Joseph Beuys” scheduled for Feltrosa 2012. The main material must be handmade wool felt, with the option of using all kind of techniques and to combine them with other materials and weaving techniques. Joseph Beuys, German leading figure of the conceptual art scene between the 60s and the 80s, has left valuable evidence of his work in Italy: this is the case of the six boards held at the Palazzo della Penna in Perugia, which communicate with drawings and inscriptions the main topics of his poetic. For Beuys, the artist is like a shaman: his task is mediate between society and its evolutionary need of spiritual and material renewal, rather than produce aesthetic objects for the museum.

- Application is limited to E.U. residents
- There is no limit to the number of works submitted by each participant. Participation is free.
