It's mid-April!

Hello Readers and Subscribers:

It is the middle of April already. Where does the time go?

This is just a quick message to assure everyone that the FACFE Deadlines calendar will be repopulated IN FULL soon. We are so grateful to everyone who reached out after the debacle. Lessons have been learned. We will be more mindful when updating the site and supporting elements AND we will make sure that all work is automatically backed up.

As always, we appreciate your support and interest in Fiber Art Calls for Entry. New updates will be added before the end of the month.

All the best,

Elise & Oona

Oh Dear, Oh Dear, Oh Dear....the FACFE DEADLINES CALENDAR is (TEMPORARILY) Gone!!

We won't even try to sugarcoat this so here it is.....

We were in the process of completing some changes to the FACFE DEADLINES Calendar but accidentally DELETED it. Yes, it is GONE!! Imagine our horror! Years and years of work just vanished and we can't get it back. However, we can re-do the year 2023 and everything posted so far in 2024.

Please give us a few days to a week to fix this nightmare.

Currently in complete shock,

Elise N. & Oona L.

Back to Life_Back to Reality

Hello Friends:

We are back from an extended (unannounced) hiatus. Regular updates have finally resumed. We just needed a break to take care of a long list of behind the scenes matters.

This posting focuses on October 2015 deadlines; subsequent postings shall cover a broader spectrum.

We hope everyone had a lovely Summer (or Winter for our friends Down Under). Thanks for sticking with us. There is more to come!

XOXO,

Elise N.

Thanks for Your Patience and A Bit of Good News!

Hello Readers:

Regularly scheduled posts are back on track. Obviously, we did not make our EXTRA posting deadline last week. However, we have added 16 new opportunities with more to come.

The Good News: Fiber Art Calls for Entry and our sister site Mixed Remnants garnered a mention in the most recent issue of the Australian publication Down Under Textiles. The editors kindly sent us a copy; we saved it to Google Drive so feel free to view or download: Down Under Textiles Mention of Mixed Remnants and Fiber Art Calls for Entry.

We are so pleased that our work is making an impact with artists around the world. As always, we appreciate your patience and readership.

All the best,

Elise N.

Mixed Remnants has Returned!!!

Hello Friends:

We have been talking about this day FOREVER--the return of Mixed Remnants. While we are always in a state of flux, we are eager to push on building the Fiber Art Calls for Entry family. We still have loads of work to do on the site but we wanted to move forward by posting our first Artist Interview. Our contributor, Melva Hightower, spoke to Bren Ahearn whom we featured several months ago. You may read the interview here: http://mixedremnants.blogspot.com/2014/09/the-big-5-0-interview-with-bren-ahearn.html

It is our pleasure to bring you fiber related opportunities. Thank you for interest and support. We hope you will stay with us as we continue to grow.

All the best,

Elise N.

All Right, All Right, All Right

Hello Friends:

This is just a quick note to let you know we are slowly resuming our posting schedule. We experienced rather unexpected technical issues but we are "all right" now. Of course, the difficulties pushed back the re-launch of our sister site but that is also back on track; all will be revealed soon.

We have more items in the hopper so expect an additional posting this week.

As always, we appreciate your patience and your readership!

All the best,

Elise N.

A Touch of Warmth

Hello Friends:

Spring is officially here. We are so pleased to welcome the coming new growth and change.

Fiber Art Calls for Entry is also in the process of change. First, we recently decided to shift to a different distributor for our Newsletter. MailChimp has been a tremendous resource for us and we are pleased and grateful for their service. However, we have switched to Mad Mimi as our newsletter distributor. Our goal is to GROW this site and it appears Mad Mimi will suit our needs going forward.

The first mailing with Mad Mimi has already been sent. We still need to work on the layout and fix a few minor glitches. The most notable change is the header; we decided to create a new image for the Spring and Summer mailings:

Second, real progress is being made on Mixed Remnants. We will re-open the site before the end of March.

We have so much more to come. Thanks for your readership.

All the best,

Elise N.

Repeat after me, "Spring is nearly here. Spring is nearly here."

Hello Friends:

We are a gearing up for the re-launch of Mixed Remnants. The initial plan was open the site in February but we still have a few items to complete before the big debut. All will be finished shortly.

A few announcements:

1. Small changes are being made to Fiber Art Calls for Entry. They will be folded in over time so you will see the changes but they won't be dramatic.

2. The Institut des hautes études en arts plastiques (IHEAP) has a Call for Applications for Session X, 2014-2016.

The Institut des hautes études en arts plastiques (IHEAP) offers participants a course of study where they can free themselves from the inherited art history of the 20th century, by investigating crucial issues of art in the 21st century, an ongoing history in which the participants will eventually take part. Read More here

That's it for now. We'll be back soon.

As always, we appreciate your readership.

All the best,

Elise N.

Nearly there....

Hello Friends:

It's hard to believe we are nearly at the end of the 2013. For some reason, the year has just "flown by" for me. Twenty (20) new items were posted today. However, we will try to squeeze in one more update before the new year.

The start of 2014 promises new additions and possible expansion of Fiber Art Calls for Entry. Our goal is to broaden our listings and to FINALLY finish the revamping of our sister site, Mixed Remnants.

Before we depart, I would like to highlight three male contemporary fiber/textile artists:

According to the Wikipedia, "Denimu (Ian Berry) is a British born artist currently based in Sweden. He creates artwork solely from denim; re-using jeans, jackets, and other denim clothing to create portraits, urbanscapes and other unique works. In 2013, Denimu was named as one of Art Business News "30 under 30" influential artists in the world."

Bren Ahearn

Growing up as the son of a craft-loving English teacher, I spent many hours pursuing crafts and playing Scrabble. As I grew older, I believed that in order to fit in with my peers, I had to be in the closet about my crafting, eventually stopping my creative activities altogether. My Scrabble playing, however, continued and turned into a life-long love of the study of language intersecting with my current art practice.

In 1996, I signed up for a textiles class, thereby reawakening my dormant artistic side. I am attracted to textiles because textiles are like language both are subtle, yet powerful. Also, both can protect, expose, reveal social position, and show affiliation. I later learned that the words textile and text are derived from the same root, and several of my earlier pieces are focused on this text-textile connection.

My focus has since expanded beyond this literal connection to the multi-layered texts or readings of the cloth. Recent themes that have emerged are the socialization of American men to be violent and conflicting views on sexuality/masculinity. My hope is that upon reading my work, viewers will engage in a dialogue about the confining nature of behavioral norms.
