Philadelphia artists and designers claim the urban parking spot — an idle space between the bustling streets and sidewalks of the city. We invite you to submit a visual proposal for [spot], a series of outdoor interventions that explore the potential dynamics of this momentary public space along Broad Street.

Proposals should evolve the notion that these spots — even if only for a few hours — can be occupied by design and engage with the public. Responding to the condition of the site (a 6’ x 12’ street parking space), entries should mark a moment in the urban landscape, emerge from the noise of SUV’s and double-parked UPS trucks, and provoke new thought on this disregarded public space.

Each submission should provide a clear understanding of the installation’s final design, concept and portability. Proposals must be submitted in a printed 11” x 17” format to be considered, with at least one image showing the proposed design integrated within a parking spot and how it is accessed or viewed by the public. All design/arts disciplines are encouraged to submit an entry for consideration. The competition is open to students, professionals, individuals and groups. The Philadelphia-based jury will select entries to be included in [spot] in conjunction with DesignPhiladelphia 2008.

The Dahl Arts Center is looking for artists for an inaugural exhibition in the newly expanded Dahl galleries. Artists are required to submit four (high-quality digital) images representative of work. All work must be original, made by the artist, and completed within the last two years. Submitted works are open to a full range of processes and materials. Categories include but are not limited to: beadwork, metalsmithing, lapidary, natural materials, non-traditional materials and glasswork.

Invitations to participate in the exhibit will be based on creativity, innovation, quality,consistency and craftsmanship of the work as shown by the images submitted. Each invited artist will be asked to send no more than 3 pieces for the exhibition.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
This exhibit is designed to explore the breadth and depth of personal adornment through objects created by artists in South Dakota and its surrounding area. The exhibit will be one of a trio of shows celebrating the grand opening of the newly expanded Dahl Arts Center in January 2009.

ELIGIBILITY
All artists living and working in states within a 500 mile radius of Rapid City, South Dakota. Artists in South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota,Montana, North Dakota, Nebraska, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Kansas or Wyoming are eligible. All work must be original, made by the artist,and completed within the last two years. In accordance with the Indian Arts and Crafts Act, Native artists may be required to provide proof of enrollment in a federally recognized tribe.

$25 entry fee

AWARDS
$1000 in cash awards will be presented.

SALES/COMMISSION
Sales to the public are encouraged. Works will be for sale at the price indicated by the artist on the loan form. Works will not be removed until the end of the exhibition. The Dahl Arts Center will retain 33% commission. Prices listed on the loan form must reflect this commission. Work not available for sale must be marked NFS with value for insurance purposes clearly stated.

No longer relegated to hanging in the kitchen pantry, today's aprons are meant to be seen.

Apron*ology will be a gallery of delightful photographs and illustrations featuring exciting apron designs with easy to understand techniques and templates that will be fun for the DIY-er to recreate. Apron*ology will also feature ideas on how to re-purpose vintage aprons and how to wear them with just the right attitude and style.

Apron enthusiasts are invited to submit and be a part of of this exciting publication. Here's what we're looking for:

  • Aprons of all sizes, styles and shapes with brief instructions on how they are made. (If including a template, submit your apron with template designs unique to your apron.)

  • Aprons used in new and innovative ways. Some ideas include using aprons to:
    • Hang as window treatments
    • Wrap gifts
    • Alter and create new wearable or decor items
    • Aprons stylishly worn as an enhancing accessory. For example, put one under or over a skirt, skinny jeans or to give that dress just the right panache. (These aprons can be either original or altered designs.)

The Target Gallery, the national exhibition space of the Torpedo Factory Art Center, promotes high standards of art by continuously exploring new ideas through visual media in a schedule of national and international exhibitions.

5x5x(5) will be an exhibition that examines work on a very intimate scale. This opportunity will be open to all artists nationally and internationally working in any media with the strict stipulation that the work must fit within the parameters of five inches in any direction.

Freelance contemporary curator, writer, lecturer and critic, Elaine Levin is from Northridge, California. She is a widely published writer and speaker on contemporary ceramics and crafts.

The Jerome Foundation and Northern Lights, a new Twin Cities-based arts agency, with fiscal sponsor Forecast Public Art, announce Art(ists) on the Verge (AOV), a new two-track fellowship and mentoring program for Minnesota based, emerging artists working experimentally at the intersection art and technology, with a focus on practices that are social, collaborative and/or participatory.

Purpose of Art(ists) on the Verge
The Jerome Foundation supports several world-leading organizations such as Rhizome and Turbulence, who foster new media art practice and are important champions of such work. The ultimate goal of the AOV Fellowship and Mentorship programs is to create sustainable habitat for the local ecology of experimental art practice with the following key elements: critical support and evaluation, monetary and technical resources, audience development, and institutional recognition.

Selection Criteria for the AOV Fellowship and Mentorship Programs
All applicants must be Minnesota residents and considered emerging artists. Evidence of some professional achievement is expected, but not an extensive record of accomplishment. Fulltime students are not eligible, with one exception. If an artist enrolls in an undergraduate or graduate degree program or takes classes while maintaining a current and active professional practice of creating and presenting work to the public, she/he is eligible. Artists may be supported as individuals or as equal collaborators.

Applicants should:



  1. Exhibit talent and interest in work produced at the intersection of art,
    media, technology, and social practice, particularly in ways that are social,
    collaborative and/or participatory. The quality of past work as
    demonstrated through work samples will be considered.


  2. Demonstrate a commitment as reflected in the Project Proposal and/ or
    Artist Statement in experimenting with the boundaries of one’s art practice.


  3. Demonstrate the ability to artistically accomplish in a timely manner an
    artwork for public presentation.


  4. Present a compelling Project Proposal (a less critical selection criterion for

Twin Tracks: Fellowships and Mentorships
A total of six commissions will be awarded. Three of the six commissions are outright fellowships for the production of new work and a joint exhibition in the spring/summer of 2009. The other three commissions are part of a 9-month, experimental mentoring program for the development, production and exhibition of new work. The Mentorship program begins in fall 2008 with an intensive 3-day “Boot-Up” Camp, October 10-12, co-presented with MCAD. Over the ensuing 9 months, artists will have bi-weekly individual and group mentoring sessions and critical workshops by visiting curators and artists on multiple occasions followed by a joint exhibition in the spring/summer of 2009 at a venue to be determined.

For the twelfth time in 18 years the international residency program Akademie Schloss Solitude – located in Stuttgart, Germany – is granting approx. 65 residency fellowships of three to twelve months in duration. From 2009 to 2011 a total funding amount of 1.36 millions will be distributed: 860.000 Euro for grants and appr. 500.000 Euro for projects.

A public foundation opened in 1990 and funded by the State of Baden-Wurttemberg, the Akademie Schloss Solitude operates an international residency program awarding live/work fellowships to artists. Hundreds of artists from over 75 countries have developed and advanced projects at the Akademie since its opening, creating a close-knit, global network of Solitude alumni that expands from year to year.

International artists are invited to apply from the following disciplines: Architecture (architecture design, urban studies, landscape design), Visual Arts (including performance art and curatorial practice), Performing Arts (stage design, directing, dramaturgy, playwriting, dance, acting, musical theater, performance), Design (visual communication, fashion, costume, product or furniture design), Literature (theory/criticism, essay, poetry, fiction, translation), Music/Sound (sound installation, sound and music composition, sound and music performance) and Video/Film/New Media (including video installation).

For the second time, the application round also offers the possibility to apply for a residency fellowship in the art, science & business program. Scholars, scientists and professionals from the disciplines of the Humanities, the Natural Sciences and Economics are invited to apply.

Persons up to 35 or who have completed a university or college degree within the past five years are welcome to apply. Currently enrolled university or college students (at the time of application) will not be considered for selection. Each fellowship recipient is granted Euro 1.000 per month, in addition to free lodging. The independent jury consists of a jury chairperson and specialist jurors who independently allocate the fellowships for their respective disciplines.

The University of West Florida is sponsoring a national juried exhibition exploring the art of paper. Entries are welcome in any medium. New Media entries are encouraged, experimental as well as traditional, on or of paper. Note: Sculpture and installation work must be ready to exhibit and cannot exceed sixty inches in anydimension unassembled.

The work must be original, completed within the last three years, and not previouslyexhibited at the UWF Art Gallery. The Art Gallery reserves the right to exclude any work that presents complexinstallation problems.

The Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts offers up to fifty juried residencies per year to working artists from across the country and around the world. Residencies are awarded to visual artists, writers, composers, interdisciplinary artists, and arts or arts education scholars. The Center does not discriminate on the basis of disability, sex, age, race, religion, or national origin.

Residencies are available for two-, four-, six-, or eight-weeks stays. Each resident receives a $100 stipend per week, free housing, and a separate studio.

The Center can house up to five artists at any given time. Artists interested in applying can learn more by reading the information provided here here regarding the facility and the local setting.

Transitional Residencies
The Kimmel Harding Nelson program gives special support to emerging artists by reserving a number of "transitional" residencies for recent masters degree graduates. The application process is the same for all applicants, however applications from artists in transition following graduation from an accredited degree program are reviewed as a separate peer group.

The Kimmel Harding Nelson program provides special support to Nebraska artists by ensuring that a number of residencies are awarded to Nebraska artists each year. The application process is the same for all applicants, however applications from Nebraska artists are reviewed as a separate peer group.

Re-Applying
Applicants not awarded residencies may re-apply at the next deadline. (Please note that jurors generally serve for two years.)

Former residents are eligible to re-apply for the session two years after his or her residency. (For example: a resident during Session 1 2008 would be eligible to apply for Session 1 2010.)

Jurors
Residency awards are based upon the recommendations of two jurors who independently review support materials (without names attached) submitted by applicants. Jurors normally serve for two years.

All work submitted to the Smithsonian Craft Show must be created and made in the United States. The Smithsonian Craft Show encourages artists to continue to grow and stretch the limits of their media and is committed to presenting the most thoughtful, original, and skilled American craft objects. While the Smithsonian Craft Show is primarily looking for one-of-a-kind objects and limited production work that has been conceived and perfected by the artist's own hands and created in the artist’s studio, we accept the use of CAD/CAM and other industrial techniques and subcontracting in conjunction with hand processes. The committee and jury rely on the honor of the applicants to submit work in which these processes are simply tools, and have not become the driving force in the creative process.

Only U.S. residents who make their work in the U.S. are eligible to compete.

Acceptable media categories: basketry, ceramics, decorative fiber, furniture, glass, jewelry, leather, metal, mixed media, paper, wearable art, and wood.

The Temple Gallery will host an Artist's Book Festival on October 4th & 5th with an exhibition to last the whole month of October. The Temple Gallery is hosting this festival to launch its permanent display of Artist's Books.

What is an Artist's Book?

An Artist's Book is an artwork inspired by the book format. Within the tradition of the book it draws from bookbinding, printmaking, design, fine art and a variety of other rich art and craft disciplines. A growing number of artist's choose this format as it can be a great way to bring narrative, collections and text & literature to their audience.

How do I make a book?

A book can be made by simply stitching, gluing or stapling paper together. Go on have a go...


NOTE TO APPLICANTS

The deadline for all applications is the 19th September unless you are exhibiting with your books on the festival open days.

The gallery would prefer all books to be held for one month (the length of the exhibition). After that selected books will be held by the gallery as permanent stock for sale.

Books should be supplied with a trade price & a suggested selling price.

If an artist wishes to show work on a sale or return basis then they are limited to 15 works. They may be for example 3 copies of five different books or 7 books and one or two copies of each.

The book to be considered for the prize should be clearly marked and an application form filled out accompanying it.

Books will only be returned when payment of postage is received. Postage can be paid by card or cheque.

The American Print Alliance is organizing a traveling exhibition of prints, paperworks and artists' books by artists who are 2008 subscribers to Contemporary Impressions or members of our allied councils. Our first venue will be at SCAD-Atlanta during our Print Dialogue Days, September 25 - 27, 2008.

Soap Box 1. A carton or crate used for holding soap. 2. A temporary platform like a shipping crate on which one stands while making a spontaneous and often impassioned public speech or call for action.

Show your work — and show the world how printmakers advocate for democracy!

Please read this prospectus carefully and follow all directions for entering:

Theme The theme will be interpreted broadly to include the principles, rights and responsibilities of democracy and how prints inspire people to choose democracy, defend freedoms (of speech and the press, religion, etc.), serve in elected office, vote, demonstrate for fair governance and otherwise take part in political life. Work must fit the theme but will not be rejected if it is controversial or does not reflect the views and opinions of the Alliance's director and board of representatives.


Selection Thirty to forty works will be selected based on interpretation of the theme and quality of the work. No attempt will be made to balance artists from different parts of the country, various techniques, or liberal or conservative ideas. Works will be chosen to create an exhibition that is visually exciting with multiple viewpoints that are thought provoking and even confrontational.

Entry Open only to ORIGINAL prints, paperworks and artists' books.


Works will be juried from slides, photos (4 x 6" minimum, to 8 x 10"), and digital photos printed on paper (color inkjet or laser printouts, on glossy or plain paper). Do not send digital files (jpegs, CDs) for jurying, print the file on paper.


Size and Presentation Prints, paperworks and artists' books that are flat may be any size up to the maximum frame size of 16 x 20 x 1 inch deep. Three-dimensional work must fold to fit in a protective box no larger than 16 x 20 x 1 inch provided by the artist, must be easy to open and close, and must include a system for hanging on the wall at venues that do not provide a table or pedestal. Maximum weight is 5 lbs. including the frame or box.

Administrative Fee Current subscribers to our journal, Contemporary Impressions: include $5 administrative fee with your submission of up to three works. Non-subscribers are eligible if they are members of one of our councils: include $35 (you'll receive a complImentary subscription). If you are not a member of one of our councils, you may subscribe for $37 and add the $5 fee, total $42 (just write one check). Full-time students may subscribe for just $15 and add the $5 fee. Artists whose work is selected must pay for shipping their work to and return from the Alliance.

Frame 301, a unique art installation space occupying the street-side window of Montserrat College of Art's 301 Gallery, is seeking artist proposals for the 2008/9 calendar year. Although there is no theme to Frame 301, the project promotes innovative, original, and site-specific installations. Each of the selected artists will be exhibited for a month-long period, beginning in July 2008.

Interested artists please submit:

Proposal for window installation, including a written description and visual examples of how the artist intends the installation to appear.

The Basics:

About the Bookmark Project

For the seventh year in a row, the Koffler Gallery is organizing The Bookmark Project, an intervention of artist-designed bookmarks concurrent with the annual Jewish Book Fair organized by the Koffler Centre of the Arts. This year’s theme, Insert, explores the interplay between the reader and the bookmark in the act of reading. The reader inserts him/herself into a book, activating it with their emotions, memories, and thoughts. When the reader pauses, the act of inserting a bookmark tangibly signals a temporary exit while simultaneously indexing the point of re-entry into the text. As an insert, the bookmark becomes a place holder for the reader’s hands, eyes, and thoughts, marking territory and preserving their intimate relationship with the book. Denoting the reader’s absence, the bookmark’s presence echoes their memory inside the book. Upon returning, the reader once again replaces the bookmark in order to immerse back into the text. The act of reading therefore proceeds in the continual interchange between the reader and the bookmark, initiated and sustained by the process of ‘inserting’.

Both unique bookmarks and multiples created by fine art students and practicing artists will be introduced into the 8,000 books on display during the Koffler 32nd Annual Jewish Book Fair held from October 30 to November 10, 2008. The event draws an attendance of approximately 10,000. The bookmarks will also be on display in the Koffler Gallery showcase through November.


Requirements

Bookmarks for the intervention should be functional and should not damage or scratch the books on display. Artists are requested to submit two original bookmarks: one for the public intervention that will not be returned, and one for display in the showcase. Artists whose bookmarks are selected for this project will receive a nominal artist fee, determined by the number of participating artists and issued by mail within 30 days of the close of the exhibition.

For the 4th consecutive year, the association Toison d'Art is organizing an exhibition of Textile Art in part of the Feast of Laine, flagship event of the association. The exhibition is being staged by a set designer and attracted a large audience that has greatly appreciated the selection of works and overview.

We want to present all facets of textile art to show the public the variety and the richness of this art.

Rules
1. Who can participate? The exhibition is open to artists and craftsmen creators, who work in art textile, textile designers… The association wishes to continue to expose everyone, professionals and "Amateurs". The exhibitors will be selected based on the quality of their works.

2. The works: 70 works up will be selected, textiles or wall sculptures textiles
contemporaries. There are no restrictions for the dimensions, materials and techniques used.

Priority will be given the artistic quality of works, the quality of achievement, originality and materials used. Each artist may submit 1 or 2 works maximum. The artists who exhibit works very small (less than 0.16 square metres) may submit up to 4.

System hardware: Each work must be equipped with a system for attaching simple and reliable. The works by volume shall be able to hold themselves or be set on base.

3. The jury will be composed of

CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION:

ARTEXTURES wants to promote development, innovation of the living world of textile art. The renewal creativity is encouraged, as well as exploring new territories.

REQUIREMENTS:
  • The work must display the basic structural characteristics of a quilt. It must be made of flexible material. Additions of other materials are allowed. The whole work, or the work consisting of more than one piece, must consist of at least two layers of quilted material.

  • The work may contain traditional elements but as a whole must show an original design idea. Stagnation of craft and design, aiming only at technical perfection, will not be accepted for participation. Copies and works carried out according to somebody else's plans and quilts which are the result of workshops are not permitted.

  • The work must not be older than 2 years at the time of application.

  • The work must not have been shown or be shown before in public up until the
    exhibition in autumn of 2010.

  • A minimum size of 1 m² and a maximum of 4 m² must not be exceeded. When quoting the size on the forms and photo material, always quote the height before the width.

  • The reverse side of the quilt must be provided with a tunnel at least 8 cm width or a hanging device of its own, including rod/rail. Sculptures & artefacts which cannot be vertically displayed by hanging are explicitly permitted.

  • Garments are not accepted.

  • Each participant may submit applications for a maximum of 2 works (please use a separate form for each work). By submitting their applications the participants acknowledge the conditions of the competition.

PRIZES:

For the first time it is planned to award a Doris Winter commemoration prize for innovation of the material, technique and concept to the amount of 5.000,- K. Further prizes will include an award of innovation of large format (at least 3m², at most 4 m²) and an award of innovation of quilting, both of them carrying a value of K 1.000,- each.

INSURANCE:

The work/s is/are insured, subject to the usual exceptions - from the date of receipt until return by Textilsammlung Max Berk or by the other museums concerned.

CATALOGUE/PUBLICATIONS:

As documentation to the exhibition, a catalogue will appear in German and English language including colour pictures of all exhibits.

By sending the photos the participants agree to their work being published in connection with the colour catalogue as well as press releases. The costs of photos are to be borne by the participants.

SALE:

It is possible to offer the works for sale during the exhibitions (at 25 % commission). Turnover tax on imports (19%) for the sale of foreign works that are not in the EU is to be paid by the participant concerned. The commission is also to be taken into consideration when setting upon the price.

The exhibitions shall be passed on to the other museums concerned as complete as possible; i.e. works sold at the exhibition are handed to the buyer only when the tour is finished.

Art in the Fall at 401 is an annual arts event at 401 Richmond in conjunction with Nuit Blanche and Queen West Arts Crawl. The busy, beautiful, historic 401 Richmond building is opening its doors to artists as a space to present creative work from Sept 11 to Oct 9.

Please consider participating by submitting visual artwork for Art in the Halls, or performance/interactive art for Nuit Blanche Toronto. We also welcome proposals that include creative uses of 401's public spaces.
