For the first (and likely only) time, American Craft magazine is issuing a call for entries. We're hoping to hear from artists who'd like to be considered for coverage in our February/March 2018 Career Issue. The goal of the issue – our first ever focusing on artists' career practices – is to share tips on the sometimes tricky business of making a living as an artist. We're looking for artists who have unique guidance to offer and are willing to be forthright about their income sources.


To be considered, please send 4 to 6 images of your work along with your resume and brief answers to following questions:

• What is notable or unusual about how you pay your bills? (one sentence)

• What percentage of your income do you make from what sources? (one sentence with rough percentages – include spouse, second job, teaching, etc.)

• What's the smartest thing you've done to make your finances work? (one sentence)

With each image, please include work title, year made, materials, dimensions, and photo credits. Responses will not be published without permission; incomplete responses and those exceeding 250 words will not be considered.


Please send your response to letters@craftcouncil.org no later than Friday, September 8. The email subject line must read Feb./Mar. Career Issue. If you are chosen, you'll be notified no later than Friday, October 20.

Torpedo Factory Art Center Visiting Artist Program

The Visiting Artist Program is intended as a professional development opportunity for emerging and experienced visual artists, and to expose visitors to a new group of artists and projects. Applicants may apply for a one-, two-, or three-month summer residency. The projects undertaken by Visiting Artists for this self-directed, creative residency must be compatible with available working studio spaces and facilities.

The Visiting Artist will have the opportunity for informal collegial exchanges with Torpedo Factory artists. As part of the program, each Visiting Artist is also asked to give a demonstration, elaborating on his/her work. Visiting Artists will be able to display and sell original artwork and will be provided with workspace.

Each Visiting Artist will pay one-half of the rent of the studio (amounts range between approximately $180 and $480 per month for the Visiting Artist, depending on the studio). The Torpedo Factory Art Center does not have any shared equipment or facilities. All expenses and arrangements related to art materials, equipment, transportation, housing or other requirements are the responsibility of the Visiting Artist.


ELIGIBILITY
The Visiting Artist Program is open to all emerging and experienced visual artists over the age of 21 who are not currently Torpedo Factory leaseholders [Torpedo Factory Associates are eligible, and selection will not affect Associate status].

Applicants provide evidence of artistic accomplishment through submitted images and the application form. By applying, applicants agree to: (1) work in front of, and interact with, the public; (2) work in the studio five days a week during the period of the residency (because most of our visitors come on the weekends, we request that Visiting Artists work on those days); and (3) commit to follow the Visiting Artist Program requirements.

Visual Artist Fellowship

The Visual Artist Fellowship is designed to help artists within 100 miles of Philadelphia reach new levels in their artistic and professional practice. Selected artists will receive a stipend and a full range of career support over the two-year Fellowship to ensure the successful realization of a career goal or specific project as defined in the application.

Artists will be asked to demonstrate a vision for the next level of their professional or artistic practice and a clear plan for CFEVA’s proposed role in reaching it. Artists will be selected based on the merit of their artwork, their proven track record in project completion, their vision for the next level in their career and the ability of CFEVA to help them achieve their goals.

We invite all artists to apply with their current needs and ideas regardless of their status of emerging, mid career or established.

Eligibility

To ensure maximum participation in this program, All Finalists and Fellows
- Must live in CFEVA’s service area, which is 100 mile radius of Philadelphia. Specific geographic region outlined on application.
- May not be enrolled in a full-time academic program (part time classes and continuing education are permitted)
- May not have commercial gallery representation or a contractual relationship with a commercial gallery
- May not be a current or former Career Development Program Fellow
- Must be dedicated to a life as a professional visual artist


Application fee: $35


Electronic Application

Artists will be asked to submit an electronic application before January 15, 2013. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, so artists are encouraged to apply early.

The Textile Society (UK): Professional Development Award

This award is intended for those professionally practising in their chosen textile field, whether craft, design, curatorial, scientific or any other related textile field.

There is no set criteria for what the award has to be for. Suggestions for this award can range from travel costs for a paper to be presented, or travel costs for further research to be undertaken of an item within a collection. Funding for a stand at a craft show, machinery or goods for a practising designer, or funding for a scientific or development idea of a textile product that is struggling to be realised etc.

Its intention is to aid further development for professional practising textile people. The Award is for a monetary bursary of £1000 and is NOT intended for BA and MA students. It is aimed at PhD students and professionals working within a recognised textile field. Applications are assessed annually, and the award is given on the strength of the applicant meeting the professional criteria within their set textile field; there is only one award for all fields.

A working liason with the The Textile Society is encouraged and as such the Textile Society should be appropriately acknowledged and provided with a brief report which may be published in TEXT (The Textile Society Journal) and/or, if approriate, a study day held at a winning institution.

Applications should be written on no more than 4 sides of A4 and contain no more than 6 visuals. The information together with application form should be sent by email in PDF format or posted to the addresses below.

In order to qualify the applicant must be an individual member of The Textile Society or working within an institution that is a member.

In an ongoing bid to recognise and support new and emerging British design talent, Liberty is calling for all potential designers and creative talents to come forward with their ideas.

A panel of experts comprising of the Liberty buying team, now headed up by ex-Bergdorf Goodman Senior VP Ed Burstell alongside industry experts including top names from press and fashion retail.

From fashion to furniture, hats to handbags, craft to cushions and from ceramics to silverware Liberty is encouraging anyone with a creative passion to bring in their designs for the panel to assess.

But don’t expect a Dragon’s Den – rather it is a chance for new designers to get sympathetic and helpful advice from experts on how to nurture and develop their ideas.

The best designs will get the chance to have their products sold at Liberty, a name synonymous with the very best of new design since its doors first opened in 1875, and now one of London’s best-loved emporiums of style and design.

Arthur Lasenby Liberty trawled the world and created an emporium where the finest could meet the rarest.

In keeping with this heritage Ed Burstell is keen to champion the best new British design and craft. He and his team will offer support and direction for each step of the process that designers need to get their items selling on Liberty’s world renowned shelves.

Designer Maker West Midlands (DMWM) is looking for three midcareer designer makers for ‘Future Forward 2’ a creative and market development programme.

Future Forward 2 is the second phase of an exciting mentoring programme tailored to the needs of mid-career designer makers from the West Midlands region. It offers mid-career designer makers (the mentees) the opportunity to be mentored by an arts professional who has knowledge and experience of designer makers practices and market opportunities. The aim is to support the artistic development, advance the quality of work and the ability to access new marketing opportunities of the selected mid-career designer maker.

The intention is for the mentor and mentee to work together to assist the mentee to develop their practice; making new work of artistic quality and to exhibit or engage with a project which will raise their profile regionally, nationally and/or internationally. The programme will provide focused discussion and regular one to one support (approx 9 x ½ days) from an experienced mentor over a period of 9-12 months.

The mentees will be awarded a bursary of £2100 for materials, promotion, marketing, travel expenses and will be expected to give a presentation at dissemination DMWM event.

Suitability

Applicants should fit into the following criteria:
• be designer makers based in the West Midlands
• practising as a designer maker for four years and beyond
• be able to make a commitment to the Future Forward 2 programme
• consider themselves to be at a mid-career stage
• have ambitious to be more critically engaged and/or aspire to be more innovative
• the work shows potential for creative progression and for positioning into new market opportunities
• already have an establish body of work which has been successfully marketed and/or sold regionally, nationally and possibly internationally
• have exhibited and sold at national fairs, outlets and shows
• have reached a level of recognition but find it difficult to more forward with their practice
• aspire to the development of new work and access new markets
