The American Academy in Rome invites applications for the Rome Prize competition. One of the leading overseas centers for independent study and advanced research in the arts and the humanities, the Academy offers up to thirty fellowships for periods ranging from six months to two years.

Rome Prize winners reside at the Academy's eleven-acre center in Rome and receive room and board, a study or studio, and a stipend. Stipends for six-month fellowships are $11,000 and stipends for eleven-month fellowships are $22,000.

Fellowships are awarded in the following fields: Architecture; Design; Historic Preservation and Conservation; Landscape Architecture; Musical Composition; Visual Arts; Ancient Studies; Medieval Studies; Renaissance and Early Modern Studies; and Modern Italian Studies.

2007 Art Kudos International Juried Competition

The Art Kudos competition is an annual international juried exhibition that serves to recognize and honor excellence in the visual arts. Artists who are selected as finalists benefit from world-wide exposure in an online-only exhibition ( and have the opportunity to win cash awards for their exemplary work. Curatorial Proposals for 2008 and 2009 Conferences

CAA invites curators to submit proposals for exhibitions whose openings will coincide with the Annual Conference. The upcoming conferences are:

  • Dallas, Texas, February 20 - 23, 2008. Deadline extended: October 31, 2006
  • Los Angeles, California, February 25 - 28, 2009. Deadline: September 1, 2007

There are no limitations on the theme or media of work to be included in the exhibition, except that it must be a group show of contemporary art. CAA�s Exhibitions Committee reviews and judges proposals based on merit. CAA provides support for the exhibition with a grant of up to $10,000. An additional grant of $5,000 is available for an exhibition catalogue to be printed in sufficient numbers for distribution to all Annual Conference attendees.

With the launch of his new film and book An Inconvenient Truth, the 45th Vice President of the United States, Al Gore has managed to push urgent issues surrounding the effects of global warming into the popular realm. If radical changes in the interaction between humans and the environment are not made, then the problems associated with over-population, aggressive agricultural practices, the proliferation of pollutants, ozone depleting gases, and the melting of ice caps will drastically affect our ability to reside on earth.

This issue of Drain is interested in the role culture plays at this critical time. How can designers, artists and theorists make a positive contribution in redefining the way we relate to the earth? How might cultural practices participate in the social capital necessary in forging a new vision not just for human beings but life on the whole?

The III International Traditional and Designer Basketry Competition, Tenerife, Canary Islands

This competition is the only one that is dedicated to basketry in the world with 3 prizes of 1,500 euros and 3 prizes of 600 euros. The competition is open to all basket makers who carry out their activity individually, as part of a group or in a business.

Entries will be included in an exhibition entitled "Basketry in the World" which will open on 30 August in the "Valentín Trujillo Delgado" popular Art Hall of the Pinolere Ethnographic Park, La Orotava, Tenerife, Canary Islands. The organization will publish a catalogue of all the selected pieces in the finals which will then go on to become part of the Exhibition "Basketry in the World".

The Competition has three sections: traditional, artistic and combined/designer basketry. Entries may be submitted for one or more sections. All entries presented for the competition will remain in possession of the Organization until 30 December 2007 in order to take part in a travelling exhibition "Basketry in the world", the aim of which is to spread and promote traditional and artistic values of basketry. Prize-winning entries shall become the property of the "Pinolere Cultural Project" Association and will become part of the collection at the "Juan González Fariña" Basketry Museum run by the Association. A single cash prize of 1.500 euros will be awarded to the winner of each section.

Smack Mellon Artist Studio Program

Smack Mellon offers free studio space to eligible artists for a one-year period. The program provides artists working in all visual arts media a free private studio space and a $5000 fellowship (dependent upon funding).

Artists who are accepted into the program must be prepared to actively use their studio a minimum of 50 hours a month or they will lose it.

All applicants must be residents of the United States or have a valid visa not expiring before the end of the program, 18 years or older, may not be enrolled in any degree program and must be able to demonstrate need for a studio. Applicants may not be a resident artist in another studio program at the same time as the 2007/2008 Smack Mellon residency. Grants for Artist Project (GAP) awards provide support for artist-generated projects, which can include (but are not limited to) the development, completion or presentation of new work. Projects created in all disciplines are eligible. GAP awards offer a maximum of $1,400 for projects.

The Jentel Artist Residency Program offers one month residencies throughout the year to visual artists in all media and writers in all genres. The residency is located in a remarkable setting on a working cattle ranch in the foothills of the Big Horn Mountains. The award includes comfortable accommodation, a separate private studio and a stipend to help defray food and personal expenses during the residency. While Jentel offers the gift of unfettered time and the expansive space of the Wyoming landscape, residents are also invited to share their work through various outreach opportunities in the community.

Outpost for Contemporary Art’s “Post-Postcard” show

Outpost for Contemporary Art's "Post-Postcard" show is an annual open-invitational exhibition for small-format work that challenges artists to stretch the parameters of media and conceptual strategies by doing what they do best—subvert and manipulate the theme to their own ends. Artists are encouraged to submit small format multiples—whether that be a series of handmade paintings, sculptural objects, or a stack of production run postcards. Artists of all mediums are eligible to participate.

December 8–10, 2006, hundreds of small format editions will be installed in boxes on shelves that run along the outpost's walls. During this time, the venue will be transformed into a bazaar-like bargain-hunter's paradise.

All work must have been completed in the past three years and not previously exhibited at the Rocky Mount Arts Center. Open to all US artists 18 years or older.

Entry Fee
Artists may submit up to four (4) works for a nonrefundable $20 fee payable to Rocky Mount City - Parks and Recreation. Payment must accompany slides.

Method of Entry
Submit 35mm slides for preliminary judging. Up to four (4) pieces may be entered. Each art work may be represented by up to three (3) separate 35mm slides showing details or different views of the work.

Artists' Book Exhibition

Deadline: December 22, 2006

Celebrating and affirming the materiality of the book in any of its myriad forms, and the tactile, physical pleasures of an individual act of reading. US Artists, all ages, are eligible. All formats and media considered. Must be original editioned artist's books completed from the year 2000 - the present. Entry fee. 20% of sales donated to ALL.

International Student Design Competition

Deadline (Registration): November 30, 2006

Since 1986, SURTEX has hosted an annual International Student Design Competition honoring outstanding art & design students for their exceptional surface design work. Students and their work get exposed to thousands of worldwide industry professionals – a terrific path for beginning your career. We invite you to participate in our 2007 Student Design Competition.

This year we challenge students to create a minimum of 6, maximum of 9, original and coordinating surface designs inspired by nature. These designs are to be applied to the surface of products from one of the following 4 categories:

Home Interior
Stationery/Paper Products

We encourage you to be creative, inventive and dramatic as you develop your concept. Look at the patterns, colors, shapes and textures found in nature and let them stir your creativity. Visit a retail outlet selling items in your chosen category for product ideas. When creating your designs for your products consider how patterns, colors, shapes and textures will work together harmoniously.

Following are examples of products for which surface designs can be created:

Home Interior:
Bedding (sheets, comforters, pillows, dust ruffle, curtains, rugs)
Dining room (Tablecloths, napkins, dinner ware, glass ware)
Living room (furniture upholstery, curtains, wallpaper, lamps, rugs)

Stationery/Paper Products:
Celebration (Invitations, gift bags, wrapping paper, paper plates & napkins)
Personal (journals, note cards, writing paper, boxes, photo albums, scrapbooking paper)

Restaurant (tablecloths, napkins, dinnerware, glassware, floor coverings, wall coverings)
Hotel/Resort (furniture upholstery, wall coverings, floor coverings, bedding)

Housewares / Tabletop:
Kitchen (dish towels, plates, glasses, ceramic containers, pots & pans)
Table setting (dinner plate, salad plate, bowls, cups & saucers, table cloths, candle holders, salt & pepper shakers)

There is no cost to participate in this competition. All participants must be students in their 3rd or 4th year (Junior or Senior level) in college/university and enrolled in a surface design-related program. Submissions must adhere to the competition requirements in order to be considered.

Professors must register their school and student by November 30, 2006.

The following requirements must be met to qualify the entry for judging. Each student must:
-Professional present original artwork, demonstrating an understanding of surface design
-Be in his/her 3rd or 4th year (Junior or Senior level) in college/university
-Submit 2 rigid presentation boards, each sized 18”x24”
-Create one board to present the 6 to 9 surface designs. Create a second board to present renderings that show the application of the designs on products for the category chosen
-Label each design with its intended product application
- Submit a completed “Official Entry Form” placed in an envelope adhered to the back of 1 board (Please do not write the college/university name anywhere on the boards)


The jury consists of professionals involved in the design industry including trade press. The judges will review entries based on the following criteria:
- Surface design development (ie. hand drawn and/or computer generated)
- Creativity, style and use of color and pattern
- Potential for viability in the marketplace
- Presentation of overall entry and surface designs
