Hand & Lock Prize for Embroidery 2024

DEADLINE: March 31, 2024 (ONLINE)

Hand & Lock Prize for Embroidery 2024

London, UK

THE HAND & LOCK PRIZE FOR EMBROIDERY 2024 IS NOW OPEN

The annual Hand & Lock Prize for Embroidery is a celebration of craftsmanship and the fine art of embroidery. This global competition provides aspiring embroidery students and designers an opportunity to showcase their talents and gain vital exposure and experience. The aim of this prize is to promote the use of hand embroidered surface embellishment within the fashion, costume & textile industries. We provide artists, students, practitioners and enthusiasts with a platform to connect with other industry bodies; in turn gaining exposure, improving embroidery techniques and keeping the age-old tradition moving forward in the modern world.

The Hand & Lock Prize for Embroidery accepts all types of embroidery. Your piece may include more than one type of embroidery.

Our contest is open to embroiderers, students and enthusiasts anywhere in the world.

TYPE OF ENTRY

Student
To qualify for the Student Category you must be in full or part time higher education at the time of registration. Registration as a student means you will benefit from subsidised entry fee and can submit work you are creating as part of your course.

Open
If you aren't in full or part time higher education, you will qualify for the Open Category. Registering in the Open Category is for anyone of any age. You can be a skilled practitioner, a passionate enthusiast or even a recent graduate.

Submission Fees in USD:
Student: $25.00
Open: $38.00

CATEGORIES

FASHION

Fashion entrants should design a fashion garment that takes inspiration from the Prize brief. Your submission should showcase your design skill as well as your ability to embroider. Judges will look at your concept, execution, construction, embroidery skill and overall presentation.

TEXTILE ART
Entrants should examine the brief and produce an object that showcases their embroidery skills. The object could be a piece of jewellery, an artistic sculpture, an embroidered tapestry, a piece for home interior design etc. Judges will look at originality, embroidery technique, execution, construction and overall presentation.

The Brief (truncated version)

A palimpsest is an ancient document where the original inscriptions have been erased to make room for new texts. It has become a word we use to describe our capacity to see the age and history of an object or place. This idea of the old making way for the new, while leaving faint traces is at the heart of archaeology, art, evolution and innovation.

Consider yourself, the objects in your home and wider society and look for the layers that reveal the stages and transformations that led them each to where they are today. Look at your environment, the landscape, the forest, the city through which you make your daily commute. See the ancient ruins that lie sandwiched between glistening glass skyscrapers and construct your own histories.

Consider the emotion your piece can convey: calm tranquillity, vibrant exaggeration, or the blended middle ground. Find your own expression of optimism. Imbue your object with layers that aspire to hope, joy and celebration.

Embrace up-cycling as a metaphor for historical revisionism. Investigate the act of embroidery as a healing process. Recognise and highlight the transformation in you, and the objects you embroider.

Your final work should reflect a complex and personal multi-layered engagement with your inspirations. Dig deep and explore your thoughts and feelings: your submission should provoke, communicate and articulate a strong sense of emotion.

Embroidery Magazine

Deadline: (ONGOING_UNSPECIFIED)

Publishing Opportunity
Embroidery Magazine

Surrey, Great Britain

Embroidery welcomes editorial submissions. The best way to submit articles and story pitches is via e-mail to the Editor, writing the words 'Editorial Submission', following by your subject in the subject line of the email.

If you wish to contribute to Embroidery magazine, please spend some time familiarising yourself with our features and consider our tone. We aim for a mix of informative and inspiring reading related to textiles and embroidery.

Editorial submissions
If you have an idea that you would like to share with us, please send an outline of your feature idea in plain text in the body of your email, rather than as an attached file, as we may not be able to read the format. Please describe the feature, outlining the main points and how you will tackle your subject. The maximum word length we publish is 1,000 words but we reserve the right to edit all final submissions.

All final submitted work must be the original work of the author, and any references to previously published material should be included in full along with the final text.

Please note that we work at least three months in advance of the publication date and often commission earlier so we can't preview (or write a news story or list) an exhibition starting next week, or even next month (particularly true for exhibitions that are open for short periods) although we will list you on our website.

Good images can make the difference between commissioning, and not commissioning your piece. Before commissioning, we must be assured that publishing-quality images are available, and that we can obtain written copyright clearance. If we like your idea, we will ask you to send hi-res digital images or transparencies to us for consideration (see image guidelines below). Please always include a SAE for the return of any images, copy etc., included in your proposal.

Task
The theme “Embroidered Living Space Construction” brings together embroidery technology and the 3rd dimension. Within the field architecture we are for example constructing for both outside and inside space. Our view of contemporary cities is seen through industrial development- constructive, clear lines, clean- transparent design elements, using construction materials such as concrete, steel, and glass. But not only in architecture can industrial development be seen, but also in machinery advancements in the expanding world of technical decorative design. Whether in the automobile industry, medicine, or advertising: embroidered textiles are everywhere often in combination with printed textiles and 3D forms, which are examples of contemporary achievement.

We are expecting presentations and material studies that make a statement, innovative embroidery technology that is functional and implies repeatability. The work should be machine produced. The design aspect is in the forefront along with the innovative product point through a free choice of materials and technologies. New materials and prototypes are not restricted.

Deadline: 1st October 2010 (EMAIL)

The Worshipful Company of Broderers

Worldwide Embroidery Design Competition 2010

BRIEF (truncated)
Introduction
The competition is to create your own ORIGINAL design, which will be interpreted in hand embroidery by the experts at the Royal School of Needlework, for the Worshipful Company of Broderers` commemorative table-top Lectern Fall to celebrate the 450th anniversary of their original Royal Charter in 1561, granted by Queen Elizabeth I.

Who can Enter
This is a Competition open to anyone from anywhere in the world who is interested in design for embroidery. Entrants must be over 18 years of age. Entries must be submitted by an individual. No group entries allowed.

Brief
The underlying meaning of the Brief indicates that successful applicants will embrace the suggestion that the judges will be looking for innovation and a very contemporary feel to the designs submitted. It is worth remembering that for over 500 years The Worshipful Company of Broderers has championed the creation of embroidered artefacts which have reflected the spirit of the moment. In so doing they have encouraged and supported cutting edge and forward looking contemporary embroidery design, all the while maintaining the highest quality from design to completion.

Good design, though fashionable, will endure. The present Master and the Liverymen of the Broderers wish to mark this occasion with a new embroidered table-top lectern fall. The winning design will celebrate all that is meaningful, forward looking, innovative and creative and will reflect the best of textile thinking at the beginning of the 21st Century.

Research Material
Much of the Broderers` history was lost in the Great Fire of London of 1666 and more was lost in the Blitz of 1940 during the Second World War. Your design should be informed by your own research. You should begin by visiting the website of The Worshipful Company of Broderers on www.broderers.co.uk

Size and Dimensions
The Embroidery Design is to be suitable to be a fall in front of a table-top lectern
The lectern fall will be mounted, but not framed, on a board measuring 14” (36cms) high and 18” (46cms) across

Artist`s Statement
You are requested to supply an artist`s statement of not more than 100 words to accompany your design in order to help inform the judges.

SUBMISSION RULES
