Each year 6x6 includes thousands of artworks from around the world and every US State! This year we hope to reach deeper into the global art community. This includes obtaining artwork from more national and international artists and celebrities. We would also like to have significant participation from all 12 of Rochester's sister cities. Every year, 6x6 has grown and the consistently high caliber of artworks each year has been astounding. 

All proceeds benefit Rochester Contemporary Art Center. This is a fun initiative that brings together a diverse collection of artists and artworks. It is also an important fundraiser that support our thoughtful contemporary art programming throughout the rest of the year.

We welcome and encourage participation from everyone of all ages and skill levels.

The goal is to gather many pieces of original 6-by-6 works of art. Each person may enter up to 4 artworks.

3D (three dimensional) pieces are accepted. Please keep in mind that in order to install this exhibition our highly skilled staff will only be using push pins and the occasional small nail. If your piece is smaller than 6 inches, please mount it to a 6 by 6 inch board or support.

Established in 2009, Arquetopia Foundation is a self-sustaining, officially registered Mexican and Peruvian nonprofit organization of artist-run professional spaces that receive zero external funding. Arquetopia is strictly unaffiliated with any political, religious, war industrial or weapon-building entities. Your fully tax-deductible donation will help us continue to develop our outstanding, unique arts programs that contribute to positive social change.

Arquetopia's distinctive residency programs are an international reference for social creativity, artistic research, and sustainability in the arts, and due to its longevity, Arquetopia's programs have become a model for many residencies around the world. We are invested in providing an inclusive experience where research and critical thinking can become a generous space to rethink studio practices, and where all ideological preconceptions including gender, race, class, and age are constantly being challenged.

THE HAND & LOCK PRIZE FOR EMBROIDERY 2024 IS NOW OPEN

The annual Hand & Lock Prize for Embroidery is a celebration of craftsmanship and the fine art of embroidery. This global competition provides aspiring embroidery students and designers an opportunity to showcase their talents and gain vital exposure and experience. The aim of this prize is to promote the use of hand embroidered surface embellishment within the fashion, costume & textile industries. We provide artists, students, practitioners and enthusiasts with a platform to connect with other industry bodies; in turn gaining exposure, improving embroidery techniques and keeping the age-old tradition moving forward in the modern world.

The Hand & Lock Prize for Embroidery accepts all types of embroidery. Your piece may include more than one type of embroidery.

Our contest is open to embroiderers, students and enthusiasts anywhere in the world.

TYPE OF ENTRY

Student
To qualify for the Student Category you must be in full or part time higher education at the time of registration. Registration as a student means you will benefit from subsidised entry fee and can submit work you are creating as part of your course.

Open
If you aren't in full or part time higher education, you will qualify for the Open Category. Registering in the Open Category is for anyone of any age. You can be a skilled practitioner, a passionate enthusiast or even a recent graduate.

CATEGORIES

FASHION
Fashion entrants should design a fashion garment that takes inspiration from the Prize brief. Your submission should showcase your design skill as well as your ability to embroider. Judges will look at your concept, execution, construction, embroidery skill and overall presentation.

TEXTILE ART
Entrants should examine the brief and produce an object that showcases their embroidery skills. The object could be a piece of jewellery, an artistic sculpture, an embroidered tapestry, a piece for home interior design etc. Judges will look at originality, embroidery technique, execution, construction and overall presentation.

The Brief (truncated version)

A palimpsest is an ancient document where the original inscriptions have been erased to make room for new texts. It has become a word we use to describe our capacity to see the age and history of an object or place. This idea of the old making way for the new, while leaving faint traces is at the heart of archaeology, art, evolution and innovation.

Consider yourself, the objects in your home and wider society and look for the layers that reveal the stages and transformations that led them each to where they are today. Look at your environment, the landscape, the forest, the city through which you make your daily commute. See the ancient ruins that lie sandwiched between glistening glass skyscrapers and construct your own histories.

Consider the emotion your piece can convey: calm tranquillity, vibrant exaggeration, or the blended middle ground. Find your own expression of optimism. Imbue your object with layers that aspire to hope, joy and celebration.

Embrace up-cycling as a metaphor for historical revisionism. Investigate the act of embroidery as a healing process. Recognise and highlight the transformation in you, and the objects you embroider.

Your final work should reflect a complex and personal multi-layered engagement with your inspirations. Dig deep and explore your thoughts and feelings: your submission should provoke, communicate and articulate a strong sense of emotion.

Submission Guidelines for the First Round of Judging

For the first round entrants should only submit images. These images should convey a combination of your overall vision, your design journey, your research and include fine details. If your submission is incomplete, images of your work in progress and a rendering of your overall scheme can be submitted.

Our judges will use these images to assess your embroidery vision and how you have chosen to interpret the brief. Judges will look for evidence of your inventive and original interpretation, as well as your technical ability and overall design.

For the first round you will be asked to upload six images. These images should meet the following criteria:

– Three research images (Consisting of concept or mood board and embroidery samples).

– Three images of your embroidered Textile art or fashion piece (If final design is not complete, then please provide images/designs of how the final piece is expected to look).

– Your images should demonstrate that you have followed the specially written brief.

– Your images should not be doctored, obscuring your overall design vision or your embroidery skill.

– Your submission should be accompanied by up to 200 words describing your overall concept along with techniques and materials used.

We’ll be celebrating 50 Years of International Quilt Festival

The roots of International Quilt Festival began in 1974 when Founder Karey Bresenhan opened an antique store in Houston that soon became a quilt shop (Great Expectations Quilts). The next year, she held a “thank you” show, sale, and event for customers. Since then, over the years and at larger and larger venues, Festival has become the world’s greatest quilt show, sale, and Quiltmaking Academy, with tens of thousands of attendees coming from the U.S. and dozens of countries to Houston each fall to celebrate the artistry, creativity, and love of quilting.

For our 50th anniversary celebration in 2024, we’ll have a beautiful exhibit featuring red, white, & blue quilts! Whether antique or contemporary or Art, Traditional, or Modern in design, you can submit your quilt to be part of this once-in-a-lifetime exhibit!

Limit three (3) entries per person.
Each work must measure a minimum of 36” on each side.
The quilt can be NO LONGER than 110” ON A SIDE.

Quilt must read as red, white and blue. Small areas of other colors may be in the design of a fabric but the colors of the quilt must read as Red, White, and Blue.

Only quilts should be submitted. 
There is a nonrefundable $20 submission fee per quilt.
There is no made by date.

Contextile 2024 – Contemporary Textile Art Biennial

Contextile 2024 – Contemporary Textile Art Biennial

CONTEXTILE invites all artists (national and international) to present artworks to the competition for the International Exhibition, as part of the programme of its 7th Edition, Contextile 2024 – Contemporary Textile Art Biennial, to be held in the city of Guimarães, Portugal, from the 7th September to the 15th December 2024.

In 2024, the Contextile biennial focuses its activities on the thematic concept To TOUCH, transversal to all the rubrics of its programmatic contents.

The International Exhibition will be composed by 50 artworks from 50 artists, 45 of these works will be selected for exhibition indoors and 5 works for outdoors (public space).

The artistic works will be selected by an international jury, composed by Lala de Dios (art historian, curator and teacher of textile), Janis Jefferies (Emeritus professor of visual arts and curator), Magda Soboń (textile artist and visual arts teacher), Cindy Steiler (visual artist), Cláudia Melo (artistic director of Contextile 2024).

The jury will also award an Acquisition Prize of €7.000,00 (seven thousand Euros) and two Honourable Mentions with prizes award (see selection process of the Regulations), at the moment of the biennial’s opening.

The 50 works of the international exhibition may also be selected, during the biennial, for the ATP – Associação Têxtil e Vestuário de Portugal Acquisition prize, in the amount of €2.500,00 euros.

The interested artists may apply with new creations or recent artworks, until the 8th March 2024, being accepted all artistic expressions in the visual arts disciplines. The proposals and artworks submitted for the competition will have to be around the textile element, through its concept, theme, techniques or materials. 

The artworks will have to be highly creative, original, technically competent and relate to the theme and concept of this 7th edition.

The application will only be considered finalized and validated after payment of the registration fee: €10.00 (euros) / $11,00 USD.
