Maryland Transit Administration Art-In-Transit

Deadline: November 14, 2014 {ONLINE}

Art-In-Transit
Maryland Transit Administration

Baltimore, MD
2015 and Beyond

The Maryland Transit Administration’s (MTA) General Engineering Consultant Team (GEC) seeks artists to create enhancements for the future Purple Line light rail project. The Purple Line, expected to be operational in 2020, will connect Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties in Maryland.

Artists are being asked to submit applications by Friday, November 14, 2014, to be considered for future opportunities along the Purple Line. This Call for Artists is open to all professional artists, preferably with public art experience. This call is open to artists from a broad range of media, and will be used to generate pools of artists who could be selected to compete for specific projects in the future.

Approximately 21 locations have been identified as Art-In-Transit opportunities, including fences, railings, ground planes, feature walls, retaining walls, bridges, tunnel portals, way-finding pylons, and station canopies and windscreens.

The second phase of artist selection is expected to begin in 2015, with a competitive interview or proposal process for each opportunity. Artists who are invited to submit proposals will be offered a stipend commensurate with the scope of the project and the proposal requirements.

Artists will be asked to work with the communities along the corridor to create artwork that highlights the cultural vitality of the region, and reflects the artistic, cultural and/or historical interests of the surrounding communities.

This Call to Artists / Request for Qualifications (RFQ) is being issued by the General Engineering Consultant (GEC), who is contracted to provide planning, engineering and design services for the Purple Line on behalf of the MTA. Ultimately, final design, construction and operation services will be contracted to a public-private partnership which, after award, will become the Soliciting Organization for the Art-in-Transit Program and which will use the artist pools developed by this process to issue solicitations for specific project opportunities.
