Textiles, one of the oldest forms of production, connect us to history and human experience. How do practices, beliefs and knowledge shape self-identity and cultural fabric?

Artists are invited to submit work that places emphasis on the concept of cloth through broad definition and use of materials. Traditional or uncommon approaches to weaving, stitching, knitting, dyeing, felting, crochet, layering, surface embellishment and patterns as well as digital interpretation may be applied.  All materials and techniques will be considered.

The application fee for our juried exhibitions is $30 for up to three images of work, plus one detail image if necessary. A limited number of artists who experience financial hardship may be exempt from paying the entry fee; please send us an email to request a fee waiver: general@womanmade.org.

We encourage entries of recent works, but there is no restriction in the creation date. All applicants should submit an artist’s statement about their body of work. Accepted artworks must not exceed 72" horizontally and must not have been previously shown at WMG.

Woman Made Gallery annual programs include six to eight juried exhibitions which explore a wide variety of themes: spirituality, environmental concerns, race and gender issues, historical observations, political investigations, etc. with an emphasis on celebrating human diversity. The majority of exhibitions are open to artists worldwide and of all genders working across all disciplines. Exceptions are the annual International Open which invites female identified artists to submit their work.

Spoonflower Emerging Designer Grant:

• Allows students to create custom fabric and wall media for use in fashion shows or exhibitions.
• Awards recipients $150 in Spoonflower credit.
• Supports emerging student designers.
• Boosts usage of digitally printed fabrics and wall media.
• Increases awareness of the capabilities of digital printing.

The Spoonflower Emerging Designer Grant was created to support undergraduate and graduate students in pursuit of textile and design degrees worldwide. Selected recipients will receive an award of $150 in Spoonflower credit to design their own digitally printed fabrics and wall media for use in shows and exhibitions.


Eligibility

Any student currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate textile or fashion design program is eligible to apply. Proof of enrollment is required. Please provide one of the following:
•A transcript or class list for the current term (must include the date/term)
•A copy or picture of your student ID (must include an expiration date or term)
•A tuition bill for the current term (must include the date/term)
•An official acceptance letter for the upcoming term (must include the matriculation date)

Design Exchange, in partnership with RBC, is pleased to announce the RBC EMERGING DESIGNER COMPETITION, an exciting national competition that seeks to provide an unparalleled opportunity for emerging Canadian designers to gain recognition and exposure, while celebrating the immense and diverse design talent in Canada.

Eligibility
Participation is open to all Canadian designers with no more than five years of professional industry experience, across all disciplines. Projects submitted should be
realized work, or be in the process of being realized.

Why participate?
The winner will receive a cash prize of $10,000, and will also be partnered with a curatorial mentor who will aid them in the development of an exhibition to be featured at the Design Exchange in January of 2014, to coincide with Toronto’s internationally celebrated Design Week.

Secondary awards will be presented, including best of category awards, where participants may receive a $1,000 cash prize.

All winning and honourable mention work will be featured onsite at the Design Exchange during the 2014 Design Week, in an awards publication, and in an online
exhibition.

How to participate
Register for the competition prior to September 1, 2013 on the Design Exchange website (dx.org). A registration number will be sent to you via email. Be sure to place that number on all submitted material, including your entry form which can also be found on the DX website. Submit the completed entry form along with the required materials listed below by 5pm on Monday September 30, 2013.

Judging
Heather Reisman, Marcel Wanders, and Douglas Coupland, as well as representatives from RBC will review all valid entries.

Jurors will select the Emerging Designer of 2013 and secondary winners based on evidence that the work is innovative, unprecedented and viable.

The jury reserves the right not to award prizes. The jury’s decision is final. The Design Exchange will notify the winning Emerging Designer, and any secondary winners, on October 25, 2013.

Submission Guideline:

The work has to be original and utilized by inkjet textile printing technology. The size of the final work should not be larger than 7 feet in length and 15 feet in width.

Each Artist / Designer / Craft Practitioner can submit maximum of 3 pieces of artwork for selections. The work should be prepared in jpg format and the file size should be no larger than 5 MB. For details or multiple files of the same work, you can submit 5 files in total.
