Astronomical Quilts! Block Challenge

Deadline: August 1, 2014 (RECEIVE)

Astronomical Quilts! Block Challenge
International Quilt Market

Quilts, Inc.
Houston, Texas
October 2014

You are invited to participate in a block challenge…with NASA Astronaut Karen Nyberg!

While on board the International Space Station, Nyberg created a star-themed quilt block that will be returning to earth with her. Her block will be combined with other blocks submitted by International Quilt Festival attendees to create a quilt that will be displayed at the 40th-anniversary show next fall 2014 in Houston.

How can you be a part of this exciting project? Submit your own star-themed block!

The Details:
• Create a star-themed 9.5"-square unfinished block (so that when quilted, it will be a 9" finished block).
• The theme should be any variation on a star. We welcome all types—traditional, modern, and artsy variations. Limit one block per person.
• Use any color scheme and techniques you would like, but please do not use any embellishments.
• Sign your unfinished block on the front with a permanent marker. Please include your name and your location.
• Mail your block for receipt by August 1, 2014.

World War II Home Front Quilt Challenge

Deadline: January 15, 2014 (RECEIVE)

World War II Home Front Quilt Challenge
Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park

Voices in Cloth in Craneway Pavilion
Richmond, California
March 22 & 23, 2014

This quiltmaking challenge focuses on the years 1941 - 1945, a brief and influential period in American history that continues to impact life in the United States today. The WWII Home Front theme was chosen to celebrate one of our newest National Parks, the Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park, located in Richmond, California. Quilts inspired by any aspect of civilian wartime life across the USA are welcomed.

Eligible Subject Matter:
Eligible subject matter is limited to recognizable aspects of civilian wartime life in the United States during the period between the attack on Pearl Harbor and the end of World War II in Europe and the Pacific. Any topic, including events, activities, and responses to conditions experienced by children, women and men in their personal lives, as civilian workers, and as volunteers, may be depicted or interpreted.

If your quilt includes quotations, photos/photographic images, or artwork/drawings, they must be your original work, or copyright-free and in the public domain.

Eligible Participants:
Participation is open to anyone living in California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and Hawaii. Each entrant may enter one quilt, which must be solely the product of his or her making. No group or collaborative quilts will be accepted.

Quilt Requirements:
For this challenge, traditional, contemporary, and innovative quilt construction techniques are encouraged. Originality and personal expression in concept, design, and execution are desirable.

Quilts are traditionally defined as having three layers stitched together. Non-traditional approaches sometimes utilize two layers stitched together. For this challenge, both approaches qualify, as long as the layers are held together by machine or hand stitching, knotting, or tying. Natural and synthetic fiber and textile materials must be used to create the layers. All types of surface design techniques and embellishment may be used. However, quilts requiring special support frames, dowels, mounted on stretcher bars, utilizing picture frames, or which contain unwieldy, fragile, or breakable elements or embellishments will not be accepted.

Size/Shape Limitations:
Eligible entries will total 80 inches measured around the perimeter, and must be either square or rectangular. This means quilts may be 20 x 20 inches (square), or rectangular in portrait or landscape orientation. Examples of rectangular measurements are 16h x 24w inches, 22h x 18w inches, 25h x 15w inches, etc.

Entry Process (truncated)
• All required entry materials must arrive between December 1, 2013 and January 15, 2014. No entries will be accepted after this period.
• $20.00 entry fee is required.

Quilt for Change

Palais des Nations
Geneva, Switzerland

Challenge Submission Requirements (truncated)

Quilters are invited to create and submit art quilts that address the issue of Energy Poverty. Participating quilters can highlight an aspect of energy poverty, for example, its effects on daily life, physical safety, health, access to education and information, and economic challenges posed to those who live without electricity; income and development inequalities faced by people who live in areas without steady sources of power; and the role of solar power and other alternative energy sources in mitigating the effects of energy poverty, indoor air pollution, isolation and limited economic development created by a lack of electricity.

“Light, Hope, Opportunity” is a juried challenge. Selected quilts will be included in a traveling exhibition that will open in June 2013 in Geneva, Switzerland, at the United Nations’ European headquarters, and then tour at various quilting venues in North America through 2014.

Submitted quilts must address the theme of “Light, Hope, Opportunity: Empowering Women through Clean Energy.” A strong artist’s statement is crucial, explaining the concept of your quilt, linking it specifically to the theme of the challenge and sharing your inspiration for the quilt, techniques and materials used, etc. Please limit your statement to 150-200 words.

• Each quilt should measure 24 inches high by 24 inches wide (60 cm by 60 cm).
• Sew a 5 inch (12.5 cm) sleeve with a ½ inch give sewn on the back and mount the sleeve 1 inch (2.5 cm) from the top edge of the back of the quilt to enable a uniform display of all the quilts in the exhibition.
• Photographs: We can accept digital photos only. Images must be of completed work – not work in progress. Images will be chosen on the basis of artistic merit as well as photo quality.
• Each entry will require two digital images; one showing the whole quilt including the edges; the other showing an area in detail.
• Jurors reserve the right to refuse any quilt that differs significantly from the image submitted.
• $ 25 entry fee

Quilt for Change will contact selected quilters no later than April 1, 2013 to complete the exhibition logistics for the June 2013 opening at the United Nations’ Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. Deadline for mailing finished quilts is April 20, 2013.
