The Shop at MCBA! We are always excited to bring in new artists and expand our shop to better reflect the diverse range of mediums, pieces, and people who exist within the book arts community.
The Shop at MCBA invites artists both established and emerging to display and sell their work. More than 200+ local, national, and international book artists are currently curated in The Shop.
We accept handmade zines, journals, artist’s books, prints, paper, greeting cards, art materials, and gifts.
Consignment terms are 60/40 (artists retain 60% of sales). MCBA reserves the right to accept or decline work for any reason.

The MCBA Prize, presented by Minnesota Center for Book Arts, honors excellence in new work from across the dynamic spectrum of book art. The international competition will culminate in an exhibition in MCBA’s Main Gallery of 20–30 selected semi-finalists and a live virtual event revealing the winner.
Forms, processes, traditions and approaches are open. Work may include unique book objects, altered books, graphic novels, ‘zines, concrete poetry, conceptual, visual and literary works. Processes may include any printing or printmaking methods such as photo-mechanical, hand-worked, analog/digital, relief printmaking, letterpress, intaglio, and screen-printing, as well as hand-lettering. Works may be in edition or unique. The finished work can depart from a bound book format to engage metaphors of the book in sculpture or installation. Work can be created collaboratively, but ultimately must result from an artist or artists’ vision and active participation.
Only book projects completed between June 2022 and May 31, 2024 are eligible.
AWARDS: One winner will receive a $2,000 cash prize, four finalists will each receive a $500 cash prize, and all entries will be published here on our prize site.
APPLICATION FEE: $35. An artist may submit more than one application for different book projects, but each application is a separate $35 fee.

Franklin Furnace’s mission is to present, preserve, interpret, educate, and advocate on behalf of avant-garde art, especially forms that may be vulnerable due to institutional neglect, cultural bias, ephemerality, or politically unpopular content, the 2024 XENO Prize for Artists' Books, named in honor of xenophiles, people who appreciate all people and cultures.
The XENO PRIZE for Artists' Books will be selected from submissions to a Call for Proposals, to receive $5000 to publish one artist's book on the topic of book banning/burning in an edition of at least 100 copies.
Independent artist jurors will make the selections and the award will be announced in September 2024.

A Call for Book & Paper Arts. Book Arts: Handmade artist's books or book art objects, showing excellence in bookmaking or altered book techniques, including books made of any medium (not just paper), as well as the art & craft of letterpress printing, bookbinding, book art sculptures, etc. Paper Arts, including innovative or traditional explorations of paper sculpture, papermaking, etc.
ELIGIBILITY:
- Open to artists worldwide.
- Maximum of 3 pieces (artworks) per artist.
- Wall mounted work must include fixtures and be ready to hang.
- All work must be original (i.e. no reproductions of original artwork).
- All work must not have been previously shown in the Sebastopol Arts Gallery.

In this day and age of digital immediacy, the allure of handmade and tactile qualities of paper continue to draw interest. This exhibition seeks to bring the use of paper to the front and center of the artwork created.
Seeking works on (or of) paper that celebrate the medium of paper. Accepting paper art, artists’ books, letterpress, screenprint, printmaking, paintings, photograph prints, digital works on paper, installations, fashion, drawings and sculptures.
The competition and exhibition is open to emerging as well as established artists, 18 years of age or older, working in the continental US.

AWARDS:

23 Sandy Gallery invites artists to participate in Blood Quantum, a juried exhibition of book art about our identity, ancestry, history and personal cultural narrative.
THEME – Blood Quantum is a concept that refers to the degree of ancestry for an individual of a specific racial or ethnic group such as Native Americans. This concept got us thinking about ancestry, identity, heritage, family history and our personal cultural narrative. We are seeking book and paper arts exploring these topics, real or fictional.
MEDIA –This exhibit is open to handmade book and paper arts related works created as either edition or one-of-a-kind. Artist books, sculptural books, book objects, altered books, zines, and broadsides are all encouraged.
JUROR – Robert Gore, the Visual Arts Librarian and curator of the artists’ book collection in the UCLA Arts Library.
AWARDS – Three artists will receive Best of Show Awards. Winners are selected upon installation of the show. In addition, we will also award the Library Purchase Prize. The winning work or works will be purchased by the gallery and donated to the artists' book collection at the UCLA Arts Library.
ENTRIES - A maximum of three works may be submitted per artist. Work must be no more that five years old.
SIZE LIMITATIONS - All works are limited to 24 inches in any direction when displayed. One exception to this rule is long accordion books, which may extend out longer. Accordions allow us to shorten up the display width without losing the impact of the book.
FRAMING - Wall-hung work can either be hung framed or unframed attached with magnets and must include proper hanging hardware. If you are shipping framed work we recommend you ship the work with acrylic instead of glass.
FEES - A $25 non-refundable entry fee covers up to three works and is payable upon submission. Just to clarify, the entry fee covers one, two or all three works, it is not a per work fee.
INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS - Artists residing outside of the United States are welcome to enter this exhibition. The exhibition entry fee of $25 must be paid in US funds.

The Helen M. Salzberg Artist in Residence Program funds two working residencies for artists each academic year at the Jaffe Center for Book Arts, in the fall and spring semesters. Artists working in the book arts (and other media, too, as long as the creative project can be thought of as book arts related) are encouraged to apply for this prestigious and competitive award. We accept applications from artists from all over the world.
Poet and artist Helen M. Salzberg established the Salzberg AIR Program in 2011. Income from this endowed fund enables artists working in the book arts to come to the Jaffe Center on a semester basis to work and teach at the center. While here, the artist will produce a creative project using JCBA studios and also teach a workshop for FAU students and the general public and mentor FAU students as his or her schedule allows. The Salzberg AIR Program gives our students the opportunity to work alongside highly talented and creative book artists.
The next Salzberg Artist in Residence for which we will be accepting applications is Fall 2015. The residency period is for the Fall Semester, which runs mid August through early December. AIRs are not required to be at the Jaffe Center for Book Arts for the duration of the semester. However, we do require each resident to complete his or her creative project, teach the resident's workshop, and vacate the studios by the end of the semester. The Fall 2015 Salzberg AIR will receive a stipend of $3,000.

Rather than proposing a strict set of limitations, this exhibit aims to encourage artists working in the book form to use the definition, etymology or other interpretation of the word ‘artifact’ as inspiration for the creation of new works, or as a tool to select existing works for submission to this call:
Definition:
n. 1 an object made by a human being, typically an item of cultural or historical interest.
2 something observed in a scientific investigation or experiment that is not naturally present but occurs as a result of the preparative or investigative procedure.
Etymology:
ORIGIN early 19th cent.: from Latin arte ‘by or using art’ + factum ‘something made’ (neuter past participle of facere ‘make’).

• All entries must be available for sale during the exhibition dates. The prices you submit during the entry process are the retail prices the gallery will adhere to throughout the duration of the exhibition.
Restrictions:
• Books that measure more than 18 inches (closed) or 36 inches (open) in any dimension are ineligible.
• Wall works that require use of anchor bolts or other specialty installation hardware are ineligible.
• If your work requires special installation, please contact gallery before submitting your entry.

The MCBA Prize recognizes and promotes excellence in new work from across the expressive spectrum of book art. Integrity will determine the winning work. Integrity refers to a unity of form, materials and content that reflects an artist’s vision.
Book art in a broadly defined field includes work that embodies narrative, instruction, reference, mapping, guides, documentation, and more. It is work that engages the viewer and propels the experience forward through narrative, sequencing, spatial elements, visual or verbal language, temporal, mechanical, aural, typographic, symbolic or material means.
ENTRY FEE: $40.00 US per entry
ELIGIBILITY AND RESTRICTIONS
All artists who use the book format as their primary means of expression are eligible to apply. Accepted works may range from hand-printed fine press books, to inexpensive pamphlets, to one-of-a-kind sculptural works that reference the role of the book in contemporary society. All techniques, approaches and methods of creative expression will be considered.
Work must have been completed since April 1, 2013.
Students are not eligible, nor is work completed as part of a degree-granting program.
MCBA staff and board members are not eligible.
Collaborative works are eligible with the consent of all involved parties.
Artists may submit multiple entries.
AWARDS
Five (5) finalists will each receive a $500 cash award, plus $750 travel/lodging stipend to attend the Book Art Biennial and MCBA Prize Gala.
One (1) winner will receive an additional $2000 cash award (in addition to the $500 finalist award and $750 travel/lodging stipend to attend the Biennial).

MCBA Prize 2015

The MCBA Prize recognizes and promotes excellence in new work from across the expressive spectrum of book art. Integrity will determine the winning work. Integrity refers to a unity of form, materials and content that reflects an artist’s vision.
Book art in a broadly defined field includes work that embodies narrative, instruction, reference, mapping, guides, documentation, and more. It is work that engages the viewer and propels the experience forward through narrative, sequencing, spatial elements, visual or verbal language, temporal, mechanical, aural, typographic, symbolic or material means.
ENTRY FEE: $40.00 US per entry
ELIGIBILITY AND RESTRICTIONS
All artists who use the book format as their primary means of expression are eligible to apply. Accepted works may range from hand-printed fine press books, to inexpensive pamphlets, to one-of-a-kind sculptural works that reference the role of the book in contemporary society. All techniques, approaches and methods of creative expression will be considered.
Work must have been completed since April 1, 2013.
Students are not eligible, nor is work completed as part of a degree-granting program.
MCBA staff and board members are not eligible.
Collaborative works are eligible with the consent of all involved parties.
Artists may submit multiple entries.
AWARDS
Five (5) finalists will each receive a $500 cash award, plus $750 travel/lodging stipend to attend the Book Art Biennial and MCBA Prize Gala.
One (1) winner will receive an additional $2000 cash award (in addition to the $500 finalist award and $750 travel/lodging stipend to attend the Biennial).

- Bound and Unbound III: Altered Book Exhibition entry is open to all. Entry is free. Artists may submit up to three works for consideration.
- Artists may submit either a CD or electronic files (attached to the online project form http://libguides.usd.edu/altered-entry) readable on PC and Mac, containing images for up to three works with one image per piece. Images should not be greater than three MB with the longest dimension at 1000 pixels and a resolution of 200 pixels per inch.
- Submitted application materials will not be returned.

The Cary Graphic Arts Collection at Rochester Institute of Technology invites applications for a one-month research fellowship for the study of the history of graphic communication. The fellowship is open to scholars engaged with subject areas covered by the library’s holdings. The Cary Collection is one of the premier libraries on graphic communication history. The collection has extensive primary and secondary resources on the development of the alphabet and writing systems, early book formats and manuscripts, calligraphy, the development of typefaces and their manufacturing technologies, the history and practice of paper making, typography and book design, artists’ books, printing and illustration processes, and bookbinding.
The Cary Collection short-term fellowship is for one month of study in residence at the library, with a stipend of $2,500 to cover travel and living expenses. The fellowship must be used within a year of the award.

Artist/Instructor-in-Residence in Book Arts in Spring Semester of 2015 is a 16 week-long fellowship program intended to present the participants as role models for the OCAC community, to advance the careers of the practicing artists, and to strengthen the public’s awareness of the significant role that making has in a contemporary art context. By promoting an understanding of the creative process, the Artist-in-Residence Program expands OCAC’s mission as a public resource center for the exchange
and exploration of ideas relevant to our cultural and social environment, particularly for engagement in the discourse surrounding contemporary craft and critical making.
Who Can Apply
The Artist/Instructor-in-Residence in Book Arts is open to visual artists who:
• are working primarily with artist book or paper-making materials and processes;
• are able to provide evidence through appropriate documentation of 5 or more years of active professional studio practice;
• hold an MFA in Visual Arts with an emphasis in printmaking, paper-making, artist books or equivalent;
• have two or more years teaching experience in a degree program beyond a graduate teaching assistantship;
• display a comprehensive grasp of the history of print, paper-making, or book arts and contemporary theory;
• are interested in the integration of artist book or paper-making practice with a wide variety of other media;
The resident must be an artist with significant exhibition records and professional achievement, strong communication skills, sustained studio practice, and desire to engage in collaborative experiences at OCAC. A resident artist is expected to pursue a clearly articulated body of work or project, to teach one 3-credit BFA course in Paper-making and to integrate his or her practice into the academic programming and activities of the larger OCAC community. To this end, the resident’s specific involvement may include teaching a 3-credit BFA course in Book Art Department, guest lecturing in a class, giving public talks, providing mentorship to students, participating in open studios, and/or collaborating with faculty or students.
The robust and productive OCAC learning environment is comprised of a diverse mix of students, faculty and visiting artists, all of whom work in a variety of materials. To better engage with the community, residents may audit one studio school continuing education class/workshop tuition-free as space is available during their residency.

• $6,000 stipend;
• use of state-of-the-art studios;
• on-campus housing, if needed;
• one Studio School continuing education class or workshop;
• focused time for Studio engagement; and
• supportive interaction with fellow artists and students.

Exhibition Theme: “Error” {mistake}.
The purpose of the “7th International Artist’s Book Triennial Vilnius 2015” is to incite artists to create conceptual works which correspond to the offered theme. Errors {mistakes} plays important role not only in our life, but also in creative process. Many scientific discoveries have been made by mistake, by error. The same are in art. We are looking for artist’s books made with errors, artist’s books with typographical, printing or binding errors. Artist’s books created about “errors” in our life and art, errors in science and engineering, errors in languages or errors on the road, and etc.
Regulations for Participants: (truncated)
1. We invite all artists to participate.
2. Each artist may submit a maximum of 3 artist’s books made on theme “Error” {mistake}.
3. Works and the entry forms must be sent till the 15th of November 2014.
4. No size or weight limit.
5. Applicant shall cover all the necessary expenses for subscription, such as shipping cost to the Triennial, insurance, etc.
6. The “7th International Artist’s Book Triennial Vilnius 2015 is anniversary Triennial – 7 is Magical Number. So we decided that the 7th Artist’s Book Triennial will be composed:
a) by invited artists (who participated many time in the Triennials); and
b) artists selected by the International Jury.
7. We will show all received artist’s books in our website for “People’s Voice”. Everybody can vote for your favourite book.
8. The organisers will publish the Catalogue.
9. There is No Entry Fee.
Main Prize: The personal artist’s books exhibition in Vilnius in 2018 together with the “8th International Artist’s Book Triennial Vilnius 2018”.

MCBA’s Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program is designed to support selected artists by providing financial and community resources, space, and access to equipment to assist in the creation and promotion of their work. Residencies may be from two weeks to three months in duration. Participation in the program is based on the artistic merit of proposed projects as well as the degree to which artists further MCBA’s artistic mission: to lead the advancement of the book as an evolving art form.
MCBA envisions a world where book art is created, cultivated, celebrated and understood as a vital and lasting expression of culture. While integrating the elements of papermaking, bookbinding, printing, typography and graphic design, MCBA supports the limitless creative evolution of the book format.

Selection Process and Criteria
Applications and supporting materials will be reviewed by MCBA staff and panelists from the book arts community. A variety of factors will be used to assess residency candidates. Basic criteria are listed below. These elements should be clearly articulated in the candidate’s letter of intent, project description, artist statement and resume. They should also be supported by work submitted for visual review.- Technical expertise as demonstrated through the artist’s body of work and practical experience
- The specificity and clarity of artistic goals as expressed through the artist’s project description and artist statement
- The degree to which the residency benefits the artist’s further development
- A readiness by the artist to engage with MCBA’s community
- An understanding of and willingness to work in a shared-studio environment
- MCBA’s ability to offer support and equipment needed for project
Artist-in-Residence Benefits
- $2000 stipend for supplies, travel and/or living expenses
- 24-hour access to MCBA facilities and equipment, including a dedicated AIR studio with a press, cutting equipment and storage space
- Consignment opportunity through The Shop at MCBA (acceptance of consignment works is at the discretion of Shop staff.)

Pyramid Atlantic is proud to offer a three month residency opportunity for artists working in the field of printmaking, papermaking or book arts (or combination of). Artists of all career stages are encouraged to apply for this residency. Two artists per session are selected by Pyramid Atlantic’s artistic staff. Resident artists work in a productive community atmosphere alongside other artists, and are expected to be in the studio at least 15-20 hours per week. Technical assistance is not included in the residency, but is available at an additional cost.
Keyholder Resident Artists receive:
• A $200 artist’s stipend
• 24-hour studio access
• Storage space
• Inclusion in Pyramid Atlantic’s permanent collection
• Promotion through Pyramid’s e-newsletter, blog and website
Keyholder Resident Artists are expected to:
• Care for equipment and tools
• Provide their own consumable supplies (paper, ink, newsprint, and the like)
• Give one artist’s talk or public demonstration
• Share the studio with other artists; working around workshops and outreach
Application Requirements:
• Project Description - A one page letter of intent explaining your project, the studios you would like to work in, and your level of experience
• Resume
• 10 images of recent work
• $25 Application Fee
• Emergency Contact Information

CENTRAL BOOKING is a new kind of art gallery with a welcoming atmosphere, New York’s own space focusing on the art of the book.
We exhibit the breadth of the various approaches to the form, since the artist’s book can be anything from a pamphlet done inexpensively on a copy machine to a letterpress codex bound book integrating words and images to a sculptural piece that is an object itself.
CENTRAL BOOKING always welcomes viewing the work of artists. However, new artists for the Artist’s Book Gallery are only added if the work differs significantly from artists already represented.
Work of all media on the topics of art and science will be reviewed on an ongoing basis for exhibitions in HaberSpace. We do only 4 exhibitions annually so please be patient, you will be contacted when the particular theme is being curated. Themes presently open for submissions are on Memory/the Mind, Psychology, Archeology, Architecture/Engineering, Technology, Criminology/Forensics, Paleontology. Please note, these are art and science exhibitions, your work should engage with that relationship.
To submit:
Please send specific weblinks or jpegs of the actual work you wish to exhibit (not just a link to your website), with the name of the scientific theme the work is for if for HaberSpace exhibitions (or ABG if for the Artist’s Book Gallery) in the subject line of the email.
