Deadline: January 30, 2016 {EMAIL}

Waysides
John Michael Kohler Arts Center

Sheboygan, WI
April 3, 2016 to October 2, 2016

EXHIBITION CONCEPT

Natural wonders, scenic overlooks, roadside attractions, iron hand pumps that gush cold water, sweet-corn stands at the height of summer, fiberglass cows--Wisconsin waysides are more than just places of respite for weary travelers. Mixes of memory and regional identity, they are indicators that we are home, or almost there.

Based on the Wisconsin term for roadside rest stops familiar to travelers, WAYSIDES celebrates the history and natural landscape of our state and is meant to inspire works that contain feelings of nostalgia, personal memories, and cultural references.

This call invites all artists--professional or avocational--to submit an original, two- or three-dimensional work inspired, literally or metaphorically, by the idea of Wisconsin waysides. As part of the John Michael Kohler Arts Center’s upcoming series, ON WISCONSIN, this exhibition is open to all those who call Wisconsin “home.”

Total dimensions of the work may not exceed 12 x 12 x 12 inches.

ENTRY PROCESS
All entries must first be submitted to eschlemowitz@jmkac.org
Entries require a completed entry form, image of the work, and brief description of how the work meets the exhibition concept.
All entries submitted by the cutoff date will be juried.
Selected artists will be notified via email and asked to ship or deliver work to the Arts Center.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Each participant may submit one (1) entry via email.
Entries must be based on a response to the exhibition concept detailed above.
The dimensions (height x width x depth) of the work of art may not exceed 12 in. x 12 in. x 12 in.

On the Fringe — Today's Twist on Fiber Art

Deadline: January 30, 2015 (ONLINE)

On the Fringe — Today's Twist on Fiber Art
Special Exhibit
Lake Oswego Festival of the Arts

Lakewood Center for the Arts
Lake Oswego, Oregon
June 26, 27, & 28, 2015

The Lake Oswego Festival of the Arts is announcing the Call to Artists for the 2015 Special Exhibit, entitled On the Fringe — Today’s Twist on Fiber Art.

Fiber art refers to fine art whose material consists of natural or synthetic fiber and other components, such as fabric or yarn. Fiber art focuses on the materials and the artist’s manual labor as part of the works' significance and prioritizes aesthetic value over utility.

Scope of the Exhibit

Much contemporary fiber art exists on the fringes. Is it craft? Is it conceptual? Is it traditional? We often want to fit creative identities into neat little boxes––organized and easy to understand––but we also know that reality does not often conform to that degree of simplicity. At the edges, where there is overlap, there is tension. The exhibit seeks to explore the energy in that tension.

The goals of the exhibit are to capture these currents in fiber arts with works based on traditional techniques, to showcase artistic ingenuity in the handling of materials, to reference historical textile traditions, and to offer a wide variety of fiber media.

We are seeking artwork that is at once forward thinking and traditional: coming from conceptual art practice while rooted in traditional techniques or materials.

Theme

The theme for the Special Exhibit is “On the Fringe” with an emphasis on using the medium of fiber in non-traditional ways. We will celebrate the wide range of today's fiber arts media and highlight the ingenuity with respect for traditional fiber arts, practices, and history.

Eligibility

The exhibit is open to work made with fiber or fiber techniques (including but not exclusive to quilting, embroidery, knitting, crochet, tatting, weaving, spinning, felting) or with elements that reference fiber or fiber traditions.

Makers of wearable art and jewelry, please consider whether Art in the Park is a more suitable venue for your work.

Works Eligible:

◾ All work must be original and created within the last three years.
◾ Maximum length of any side of the finished work is eight (8) feet.

Artwork for the Special Exhibit will be selected based on adherence to the stated theme, originality, personal voice, and technical skill.

Jurors
◾ MaryAnn Deffenbaugh – Director of Public Programs, Oregon College of Art and Craft
◾ Barbara Setsu Pickett – Associate Professor Emeritus, Department of Art, University of Oregon
◾ Sue Stone – Chair and exhibiting member, 62 Group of Textile Artists (UK) and Society of Designer Craftsmen member

Museum of New Mexico Foundation
New Mexico Centennial Foundation
Santa Fe, New Mexico
Fall 2011 & continues for 16 Months

New Mexico became the 47th state on January 6, 1912, and communities statewide are now preparing a wide range of projects, exhibits and events to commemorate the state's 100th birthday. New Mexico-based artists and artisans are invited to submit proposals for special commemorative pieces for the upcoming statehood Centennial. A wide range of artistic media will be considered, including painting, prints, glassware, jewelry, basketry, pottery, and fiber arts (both wearable and decorative). New Mexico Creates, a program of the Museum of New Mexico Foundation, is working in partnership with the NM Centennial Foundation to promote the "New Mexico Creates/Centennial Commemorative Art" line. The sixteen-month commemoration period begins fall 2011.

Works chosen will convey some of the state's centuries-old craftsmanship traditions as well as the ongoing international appeal the state holds for artists and artisans. Items will encompass a myriad of styles from traditional to contemporary and even cutting edge.

The "New Mexico Creates/Centennial Commemorative Art" items will be sold at MNMFShops museum retail outlets in Santa Fe, and via the New Mexico Creates website, newmexicocreates.org.
