McKissick Museum: Crafting Civil (War) Conversations
Deadline: October 31, 2014 (ONLINE)
Crafting Civil (War) Conversations
McKissick Museum
College of Arts & Sciences
University of South Carolina
Columbia, SC
February 2 to May 31, 2015
McKissick Museum, along with many other cultural organizations in the City of Columbia and at USC, will commemorate the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War on April 9, 2014. For our commemoration, McKissick invites artists to reflect on the history of the war and its legacy and plans to feature a major exhibition entitled Crafting Civil (War) Conversations.
Seeking entries from artists working in what historically have been regarded as craft-based media (clay, fiber, glass, metal and wood), our exhibit will be a juried art exhibition that symbolically re-enacts the Civil War’s end as a scene of reconciliation—not between the North and the South—but between former slaves and former slave owners. The Museum ask artists to imagine and give visual and sculptural form to this scene, perhaps giving form to what Martin Luther King conjured when he dreamt of a day when “the sons of former slaves and the sons of slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.”
Eligibility
To participate, artists must have been born in, raised in (minimum one year), or be currently living and working in one of the states that joined the Confederacy: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. This eligibility requirement ensures that the prize-winning artworks that will become part of McKissick’s permanent collection are aligned with the Museum’s collections policy.
Artists must work in craft-based media—clay, fiber, glass, metal, and/or wood.
Submitted artworks must have been completed since April 2011, the start of sesquicentennial commemorations of the American Civil War.
Artists must pay a $25 non-refundable entry fee.
To be eligible for this juried exhibition, artists must be 18 years old on or before the October 31, 2014 submission deadline.
Awards
$25,000 in purchase awards will be given to prize winning artists and/or artist collaboratives. Artists are welcome to submit images of an individual artwork conceived of as a component part of a scene of reconciliation OR to submit images of an installation with multiple components OR to collaborate with other artists to submit images of an installation with multiple component parts.

Small Tapestry International 3: Outside the Line
Deadline: October 31, 2012 (RECEIVE) OR (ONLINE)
Small Tapestry International 3: Outside the Line
The American Tapestry Alliance
The American Tapestry Alliance is pleased to announce Small Tapestry International 3: Outside the Line, a juried, international exhibition of small-scale tapestries. Artists are encouraged to explore the conceptual, technical and metaphorical implications of the theme, Outside the Line, as they develop work to submit.
Innovation and experimentation within the technique of handwoven tapestry are welcomed Outside the Line asks you to first consider the concept of line. Is it a geometric concept of “breadthless length” or a mark made in art? Is it an indication of boundaries, border or limits, or is it a course of action or policy? Is line a series of generations descended from a common ancestor or the words an actor says in a play? How do you express being outside the line?
Eligibility
Entry to STI3: Outside the Line is open to all tapestry artists who design and weave their own tapestries (defined as “hand-woven, weft-faced fabric with discontinuous wefts”), either individually or collaboratively (all assistants shall be named). Multimedia work will be considered as long as the primary medium is tapestry. Entries must be one-of-a-kind and have been completed after January 2011. Entries may not have been shown previously in any ATA exhibition, including the Unjuried Small Format show. Artists may submit up to three pieces, but a maximum of one piece per artist will be accepted.
Juror
Hesse McGraw, Chief Curator of Exhibitions and Projects at the Bemis Center in Omaha, Nebraska.
Tetitelbaum Awards
Through the generosity of the Teitelbaum Legacy Gift, STI 3 entries are eligible for the Teitelbaum Family Awards. First Place-$300.00 and Second Place-$200.00. The recipients of the awards will be determined by the juror.
Submission Information
The juror will select tapestries from digital images. Image quality may influence the juror's decision. Only completed tapestries will be juried.
Notification of Juror's Decision: January 31, 2013
Entry Fees

Deadline: 31 October 2011 (ONLINE)
“New Beat”
International Student Concours
Fashion Gallery
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
Hung Hom, Kowloon, Hong Kong
People's Rep. of China
5 Dec 2011 – 18 Jan 2012
As one of the oldest forms of technology known to human kind, textile technology (making of cloth) has a long history of invention. This exhibition celebrates new explorations in textiles and creative problem solving propelled by curiosity – the synthesis of a ‘new beat.’
New Beat is a juried competition featuring select works by international design students who demonstrate inspired creativity through material manipulation. Resist dyeing, such as shibori, is a specific form of traditionally patterning cloth via manipulation and dye. Its versatility combined with modern technology has gained popular appeal with contemporary artists, including major fashion icons Issey Miyake, Oscar de la Renta and Prada. Bridging this gap between traditional and contemporary poses an interesting challenge, one that the truly imaginative and creative seize as an opportunity to travel new paths in textile’s future.
