Deadline: August 21, 2015 {ONLINE}

2016 Niche Awards
Sponsored by NICHE magazine

The Rosen Group
Baltimore MD

Sponsored by NICHE magazine, the NICHE Awards program began in 1989 to celebrate excellence and innovation in American and Canadian fine craft.

The NICHE Awards competition is open to professional craft artists ages 21 and older who reside in America or Canada and are actively involved in the design and production of craft work supplied to galleries and/or craft stores. All work must have been made and finished in the United States or Canada. Work produced or finished in secondary studios in other countries may not be submitted.

The NICHE Awards Student competition is open to any craft student attending an American or Canadian undergraduate, graduate or certificate arts program, and the work itself must have been produced in the United States or Canada while the student was attending the arts program. Student artists may enter as a student for up to one (1) year after graduation; however, the work submitted must have been produced while an artist was still a student.

The 2015 NICHE Awards competition seeks NEW WORK in all categories, whether student or professional.  Submitted work must have been designed, produced or introduced after October 1, 2014 to be eligible. Work previously submitted to the competition will not be accepted. All work must be designed and made by the artist or a collaboration of artists, with all collaborators identified.

HOW TO APPLY:

The only way to enter the 2016 NICHE Awards or 2016 NICHE Student Awards is by completing an application online. Paper applications will not be accepted.

One application (and one fee) enables you to submit three pieces of work. Only one application is allowed per artist. Each application allows for up to
three pieces of work to be submitted. Artists who submit more than one application or more than three pieces will be disqualified.

No more than two pieces may be submitted in any single category. If you submit three pieces, the third piece must be entered in a different category.  You may choose to submit artworks in three different categories if you wish.

The competition is judged on a per piece basis, not on an application or portfolio basis. It is therefore possible to be a two-time or three-time finalist or winner in a given year.

Artists may enter in either the professional division or student division, but not in both in a given year.

Contest categories include ceramics, fiber, glass, metal, wood, jewelry and more!

Judging of entries is based on three main criteria:

 Technical excellence, both in surface design and form
 Distinct quality of unique, original and creative thought
 Market viability (professional entries only)

Call for Nominations National Design Awards

Deadline: December 9, 2013 (ONLINE)

Call for Nominations
National Design Awards
Smithsonian
Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum

New York, NY
Announcement of Honorees: by June 2014

The defining criteria of the National Design Awards are excellence, innovation, and enhancement of the quality of life.

2014 National Design Awards Timeline
Nomination Deadline: December 9, 2013
Submission Deadline: February 7, 2014 (Nominees will be contacted in late December 2013 with submission guidelines.)
Announcement of Honorees: by June 2014

Nominations & Submissions
Each fall, the process begins with an open call for nominations, which are solicited from leading designers, educators, journalists, cultural figures, corporate leaders, and design enthusiasts from every state in the nation. Nominees are invited to submit materials for the jury’s review according to specifications provided by the National Design Awards office. Submissions generally consist of resumes, design statements, portfolios of work, and professional-quality visual samples.

Eligibility

Eligibility is restricted to citizens or long-term residents of the United States. Firms, corporations, or institutions must have their corporate headquarters in the United States and must have been established for a minimum of seven years. Individual nominees must have been practicing professionally for a minimum of seven years; Lifetime Achievement nominees must have been practicing professionally for a minimum of twenty years. Winners of a National Design Award in a Design Category will be eligible for the Lifetime Achievement, Design Mind, or Corporate and Institutional Achievement categories ten years of receiving their award. Cooper-Hewitt employees and trustees and their families and household members are not eligible. Awards are given for a body of realized work, not for any specific project.

Jury Process
The jury meets over a two-day period to thoroughly review every submission and consider each nominee, with the challenging task of determining the work that best embodies the Awards’ mission. The jurors assess portfolios in terms of the works’ relationship to and impact on contemporary daily life. Extraordinary originality in identifying, shaping, and solving problems is highly valued, and nominees whose work significantly broadens the conventions of their discipline, introduces formal innovation, and exhibits consistently high levels of imagination and insight are given special consideration. Finally, in keeping with Cooper-Hewitt's definition of design as a force of change, the extent to which the general public has benefited from the explorations and achievements of the nominee is weighed.

The jury is briefed by the Museum staff on the mission of and review criteria for the Awards, but Museum staff does not participate in the selection process. Jurors are asked to base their decisions primarily on the core criteria: excellence, innovation, and enhancement of the quality of life. They are also asked to consider the broad spectrum of the design community—geographically, culturally, and artistically. All jury deliberations are kept confidential.

Award Categories: Reflecting the ever-growing scope of design, the National Design Awards now includes ten jury-selected award categories.

Leeway Foundation: Leeway Transformation Award

Deadline: May 15, 2013 (RECEIVE) or (HAND DELIVERY)

Leeway Transformation Award
Leeway Foundation

Philadelphia, PA

The Leeway Foundation's grantmaking programs honor women and trans artists for their ability to create social change through their artistic and cultural work.

The Art and Change Grants and the Leeway Transformation Awards fund women and trans artists (including those identifying as transgender, transsexual, and/or genderqueer) living in the Delaware Valley region of Bucks, Camden, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia Counties, who engage in art and social change work and have financial need.

Leeway supports the natural intersection of art and social change. We understand that art is not born in a vacuum. Art is created within a context. Who we are, where we live, how we relate to our communities, and how we view the world influence what we create, how we create, and why we create art for social change.

The Transformation Award provides unrestricted annual awards of $15,000 to women and trans artists living in the Delaware Valley region who create art for social change and have done so for the past five years or more, demonstrating a long-term commitment to social change work.

The Award is unrestricted (it is not project-based) and open to women and trans people working in any art form, traditional or non-traditional.

We encourage you to apply if you are a woman or trans artist who:
•Creates art for social change that impacts a larger group, audience, or community.
•Has been creating art for social change for the past five years or more, demonstrating a long-term commitment to this work.
•Has financial need and limited or no access to other financial resources.
•Has lived for the past two or more years in the Delaware Valley region: Bucks, Camden, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, or Philadelphia County.

The Transformation Award application is a two-stage process.

Stage 1: Leeway will award up to 8 Transformation Awards in 2013. This is a two-stage application process. The Stage 1 application is due May 15. Stage 1 is open to all eligible applicants. A panel of community-based artists will review applications and make decisions to invite applicants to submit work samples for Stage 2.

Stage 2: By invitation only.

Kala Fellowship Awards

Deadline: May 18, 2012 (RECEIVE) or (ONLINE)

Kala Fellowship Awards
Kala Art Institute

Berkeley, CA
2012 Season

The Kala Fellowship award is an international competition open to artists from the U.S. and around the world. Hosting nine new artists at Kala each year helps to ensure that the artistic energy and vision of Kala’s entire community of artists in residence is continually re-energized and rejuvenated.

Artists producing innovative work in book arts, electronic/digital media (video, sound, animation, etc.), installation art, social practice, photography, and printmaking are encouraged to apply. Fellowship Awards will be given based on conceptual creativity, originality and artistic excellence as well as technical knowledge.

Annually, the Fellowship Competition is juried by a panel comprised of Kala’s Directors and an outside Bay Area arts professional. Kala is pleased to announce Dr. Stephanie Hanor, Director of Mills College Art Museum as Kala's invited Fellowship juror for the 2012 competition.

We select nine artists and each receives a fellowship consisting of:
* a $3,000 cash award
* up to six months of studio residency at Kala Art Institute
* 24/7 access to Kala's studio (An individual studio space may be also available depending on proposed projects and schedules.)
* a free class or equivalent tutorial sessions.
* an exhibition opportunity at the Kala gallery of the artwork created during the residency

Eight of the nine Kala Fellowships awards are available to artists from the US (including California) and around the world.

One of the nine Kala Fellowship awards is designated specifically to a California artist living outside of the main metropolitan areas. To serve a more diverse constituency, The James Irvine Foundation generously funds this Fellowship award. Artists from the North Coast, Central Coast, Central Valley and Inland Empire are eligible and encouraged to apply.

Additionally, one of the nine Kala Fellowship awards is available to artists from the US and around the world working in Social Practice. Social Practice can be loosely defined as a form of collaboration that engages social and public interaction as the primary component of the work. Examples include but are not limited to the following: alternative exchanges of goods and services, community-based projects, activating non-typical art viewing situations, social and political activism.

The Fellowship does not include housing.
(Assistance in finding appropriate low-cost housing solutions is often provided to visiting artists by the program directors.)

Application fee: $25 (application fee is non-refundable)
