SDA Canada Call for Expressions of Interest

Deadline: November 1, 2013 (EMAIL)

Call for Expressions of Interest
Edge of the Forest: Exploring Perimeters

Surface Design Association
British Columbia, Canada

Several Canadian SDA members who attended the 2013 SDA Conference in San Antonio have been exploring opportunities to mount this exhibition in a number of venues – at the SDA conference in Tulsa, Oklahoma, June 2015, at the Newfoundland and Labrador Fibre Arts Conference in Gros Morne National Park,.October 2015, and elsewhere. When we have confirmed venues, a Call for Entry will be sent out by email in 2014, and posted on relevant websites and blogs.

At this time we need you to email your expressions of interest by November 1, 2013, with your name, address, phone number and email address to:

Melanie Siegel
thebeadofmyheart@rogers.com

THEME

Boundaries, borders and edges...

To what extent is a country defined by its perimeter...by the choices and placement of edges?

Whether political, historical, psychological and/or geographical, our comprehension and expression of these points of delineation represent integral pats of who we are, both as individuals and collectively.

Be it selvedge to selvedge, raw edge or treated, our textiles have unavoidable beginnings and endings. How these are handled can be as varied as the makers themselves.

We welcome your rich interpretation of this concept in presenting a diverse Canadian perspective on our boundaries.

GUIDELINES

All Canadian members of the Surface Design Association are invited to participate. Artists must be current members of the Surface Design Association as of January 2015, and resident in Canada.

All work is to be created as a two-dimensional 16x28 inch rectangle format, to be hung vertically.

The top of the work will be required to have a “sleeve” for hanging purposes. The sleeve should measure two inches, in which a flat metal rod will be inserted, and should stop ½-3/4” short of the side edges so that the rod will not show on the front. The top edge of the sleeve should be placed one to two inches from the top of the work.

Label sewn on the back indicating artist’s name, mailing address, materials, techniques.
All work must be finished to a professional standard and be ready for hanging as per the parameters stated above.

The work should best represent your current practice, be it experimental or signature style, and speak to the theme expressed above.

The gallery director or curator will have final say regarding which pieces will be exhibited. We expect there may be a requirement to send digital images, bios and artist statements to the galleries ahead of time.

Details about venues, with shipping instructions, etc, will be provided in 2014.

“Always Something…”
Surface Design Association, Illinois Exhibit 2013

The Vogt Visual Arts Center
Tinley Park, IL
September 3 - 26, 2013

To become a member of SDA and participate in this exhibit, go to the SDA website: http://www.surfacedesign.org

Exhibit Concept: The intention of this exhibit is to illustrate reactions when things don’t go our way. A journey stalled by a red light, construction that blocks our path; a bridge goes up and halts our progress. One thing leads to another… Perhaps these moments allow for us to notice something unexpected, a mother and child holding hands, a sunlit tree reveals magic, we hear the sweet music of a songbird. Life is motion, each unexpected change allows for an opportunity to see our world anew and alter our perspective.

“New Beat” International Student Concours

Deadline: 31 October 2011 (ONLINE)

“New Beat”
International Student Concours
Fashion Gallery
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Hung Hom, Kowloon, Hong Kong
People's Rep. of China
5 Dec 2011 – 18 Jan 2012

As one of the oldest forms of technology known to human kind, textile technology (making of cloth) has a long history of invention. This exhibition celebrates new explorations in textiles and creative problem solving propelled by curiosity – the synthesis of a ‘new beat.’

New Beat is a juried competition featuring select works by international design students who demonstrate inspired creativity through material manipulation. Resist dyeing, such as shibori, is a specific form of traditionally patterning cloth via manipulation and dye. Its versatility combined with modern technology has gained popular appeal with contemporary artists, including major fashion icons Issey Miyake, Oscar de la Renta and Prada. Bridging this gap between traditional and contemporary poses an interesting challenge, one that the truly imaginative and creative seize as an opportunity to travel new paths in textile’s future.

Blurred Boundaries Mixed Media Art Exhibition

Deadline: July 12, 2010 (RECEIVE)

Blurred Boundaries Mixed Media Art Exhibition
Fabrications Retreat
Radisson Hotel
Kalamazoo, Michigan
August 30-September 3, 2010

Blurred Boundaries Mixed Media Art Exhibition is a juried exhibit that seeks to exhibit artwork that combines various techniques from different mediums. The 2010 show will focus on surface design.

Surface design is defined as the decoration of a surface through various coloring and pattern making techniques. These include but are not limited to screen printing, mono printing, dyeing, stitching, woodcut prints, linocuts, stamping, image transfer, and lithography. (Techniques do NOT have to be one of the listed above, they are simply given as examples to help clarify the focus of the exhibit.)

Blurred Boundaries seeks work that uses surface design as a focal point to the work. The exhibit is open to the U.S. and international participants.

The juror for the 2010 exhibit is Jeanne Williamson. Jeanne combines various surface design techniques in her work.

The exhibit will be displayed during the Fabrications Retreat in Kalamazoo, Michigan from August 30 - September 3, 2010. The Fabrications Retreat is a week long retreat focusing on various fiber art classes. The full listing available on website.
