Longform is an in-person hybrid residency workshop model, in which artists can focus on their work while also developing new skills. Participants will have the opportunity to work alongside mentoring faculty.

Longform 2024 is a studio residency that seeks to provide an intensive, creative development experience, fostering deep connections amongst facilitators, visiting artists, and participants. One facilitator, three visiting artists, and a group of residents from any career stage, generation, and practicing any media shape the residency experience through a robust schedule of lectures, readings, studio visits, workshops, critical discussions, and of course, studio time.

This residency is inspired by alternative learning models and low-res academic programs where shared experiences foster fast and lasting connections.

Each resident receives a studio space, room & board, and three meals per day.

Scholarship applications are due June 16 by 12:00 a.m. EST

Ox-Bow offers partial and full scholarships to applicants who identify as BIPOC, emerging, mid-career, artists over 65, and artists with families.

For The Open Exhibition, The Harley Gallery invites artists from far and wide, whether professional or amateur, to enter their work in this bi-ennial competition.

On the selection panel for 2015 are:

Artists: James Green, printmaker and Julian Bray, painter

Curators: Lesley Beale, Lakeside Arts Centre Nottingham, and Kirstie Hamilton, Museums Sheffield

Prizes will include The Harley Prize, £750, sponsored by The Harley Foundation, The Judges Prize, £250, sponsored by Welbeck Estates Company, The People’s Prize, £250, sponsored by Caddick Construction, and the Avonside Renewables Prize, £250.

Further prizes have been sponsored by Creswell Crags, The School of Artisan Food and The Welbeck Farm Shop.

Open to all artists ages 18 and older. All original works created by submitting artists in the last 3 years. All mediums except film and video are eligible.

Image & Submission Guidelines: Submit up to three works as digital images (JPEG format) on a CD.

Fire Station Artists’ Studios

The Fire Station has subsidised residential studios that provide self-contained, secure living and working spaces for professional visual artists.

The studios are let for a period of between one year and two years nine months. International artists may apply for shorter periods. Please note that students (including those taking full-time and part-time MA and PhD courses) are not eligible to apply for a studio residency.

Rental includes utilities, waste disposal, parking, internet access, full use of high end computers and access at subsidised cost to digital equipment including digital still cameras, digital camcorders and mini disc recorder tripods and more. There is no application form but artists should follow our guidelines as outlined.

A selection committee then reviews the application and makes recommendations to the board. The selection committee bases its decision solely on what you provide.

Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site

Eligibility
1. Collaborative proposals are permitted; individuals may submit only one proposal per year (whether alone or as part of a collaboration).
2. Artists who have previously exhibited at the site must wait five years before submitting a proposal for a new installation.
3. Currently enrolled undergraduate students are ineligible to apply.
4. All proposals must be for a site-specific installation.
5. These guidelines are for artists who wish to install visual, video or other installation work to remain on view during public hours at the historic site. The site does occasionally host live or performing arts. Please contact our Sean Kelley at sk@easternstate.org for proposals in the performing arts.

Orientation

We strongly recommend that artists begin the proposal process by attending an artist orientation. These informal tours/conversations give the artists a chance to experience the space, discuss what makes a successful proposal, ask questions, and observe visitors interacting with the current artist installations.

Orientations are recommended, but not required. There is no charge to attend an orientation.

Choosing a Location in the Penitentiary Complex

Artists may apply for any public area in the penitentiary complex for the 2012 season, except Cellblock 2 and the audio tour route. Some installations, such as Linda Brenner’s Ghost Cats have been sited throughout the penitentiary complex. The staff is available to consult on proposed locations.

Funding and Approval (truncated)

The historic site will fund a maximum $7,500.00 per project. This funding indicates approval to exhibit. All projects that are approved will be installed for one full tour season (March 15 through November 30, 2012), unless the proposal states otherwise. Artists may apply for future installation cycles, and should assume that the same guidelines, deadlines, and funding levels will apply.

Exhibition Conditions (truncated)

Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site is a National Historic Landmark, the highest designation for an historic property under Federal law. It is also a ruin, abandoned in 1971, and stands today as an architectural shell. The building has virtually no running water, little climate control, and limited electrical service. These conditions can be destructive to many types of materials. Most artists working at Eastern State build their work for the space and incorporate the inevitable deterioration into the piece.

Because of Eastern State's historic designation, art installations may not permanently damage or alter the building or artifacts in any way without prior written approval.
