What is a Miniature Book?

In the United States, a miniature book is usually considered to be one which is no more than three inches in height, width, or thickness. Some aficionados collect slightly larger books while others specialize in even smaller sizes. Outside of the United States, books up to four inches are often considered miniature.


To qualify for a Distinguished Book Award:
1. The book and its slipcase or portfolio box must measure no more than three inches in any direction.
2. There is a maximum of two entries per press and/or person.
3. The book must have been published and bound in a multiple edition of like copies.
4. The book must have been published within the past two years, 2009-2011.
5. The book must be submitted between January 1, 2012 and May 1, 2012.

One-off or Artist's Books
We will accept one-off (one-of-a-kind) or artist's books. They will not qualify for a Distinguished Book Award but will be included in the MBS Competition Exhibition Catalog in a separate section. Here is an opportunity for those who do not make multiple copies to show their work.

The Jury
The Jury consists of professionals who represent varied interests in the book arts. They are charged to select those three entries that best reflect the creativity, appropriateness of design to content, personal appeal and technical excellence of miniature book publishers, designers, printers and binders.

Winner of the MBS Distinguished Book Award
Three MBS Distinguished Book Awards are given by the judges each year. These winners are announced at the annual MBS Conclave. Winning entries become the property of the MBS. These travel for one year with the International MBS Traveling Exhibit. They are then placed in the MBS Archives at the Lilly Library of Indiana University.

MBS Traveling Exhibit
The MBS Traveling Exhibit will feature the winning books as well as selected entries. This exhibit will be touring internationally to libraries, museums, and other public forums that feature the book arts.

Textiles in a Tube 2 is a call to artists to expand their thinking in relation to textile materials, processes, concepts and results. You are invited to investigate what textiles are, or what they can be, and push forward to the “reinvention” or expansion of this multi-faceted medium. All entries must be shipped or delivered in a 3” x 36” mailing tube.

Textiles in a Tube 2 defines textiles as any type of material made from fibers or other extended linear materials such as thread or yarn including old and new materials, techniques, and technologies. The exhibition seeks to expand the definition of textiles. A statement for each piece is required stating the concept, technique, or material that supports its textile connection.

Eligibility: The exhibition is open to all artists 18 years and older. All work must be original and completed since January 1, 2008. Artwork may be 2 or 3 dimensional. Artwork and any required hanging devices must be shipped or delivered within a 3” x 36” mailing tube. All work must be ready for display.

Awards: $100 First Place, $50 Second Place, $25 Third Place. An exhibition catalogue will be produced.

JUROR: Kathleen Loomis spent her first career as a newspaper journalist and corporate writer/editor. Since 2000 she has worked fulltime as a fiber artist in Louisville, KY.

Entry fee: $25 for up to 3 entries.

Entry is by digital image only. Artists will be notified of acceptance on May 14, 2012 via email.

For each work entered, submit two digital images of the completed work, one full view (showing all edges of the work) and one detail view.

Entry forms are to be completed online, and printed, physical copies mailed with the entry disc.

Sales: All works must be for sale and Riverworks Gallery expects a 25% commission on all sold works.

The Maryland Federation of Art (MFA) invites all artists residing in the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada to enter its open-juried competition for artists working with fiber. Any two- or three-dimensional submission following exhibition guidelines will be considered by the juror.

1. Selections for exhibition are made by the juror from JPEG images.
2. Final acceptance is made by juror from delivered work.
3. Awards are designated by the juror.

Entries: Any original fiber work including soft sculpture, painting on silk, felting, applique, tapestries, wearable art and more.

1. All work must be priced for sale or marked POR (price on request). Works previously exhibited in a juried show at Circle Gallery are not eligible.
2. Maximum dimensions of entry, including outside edges of frame, cannot exceed 72” in any direction.
3. Submit one JPEG image per piece entered, or as allowed.

Entry Fees: A maximum of 6 original works created within the past 3 years may be entered.

Eligibility - This show is open to all artists manipulating fiber. All work must be original work completed after January 1, 2010, and not previously displayed at North Bank Artists Gallery.

Entry Procedure - Each artist shall complete, sign and submit an Entry Form and a cd with jpg files (max. dimension 1200 pixels, 300 dpi) of the work to be considered. Each artist may enter up to (3) three works for the single entry fee of $30. Submittals must arrive at North Bank Artists Gallery by June 23, 2012. Images of the work will only be used for promotion of the show; all cds will be destroyed by the gallery after the show opens.

Acceptance - All submitting artists will receive notification of acceptance or decline via email by July 3, 2012.


Sally Sellers has been creating textile art since 1989. She has been juried into the major textile exhibition, including Quilt National, Crafts National, Visions, Fiberart International, and the Museum of American Folk Art’s Quilted Constructions. Her work has been featured in dozens of publications and is included in more than forty public collections.

Bonnie Bucknam’s large-scale quilts have been featured in exhibitions around the country and abroad since the 1980s. Known for her striking use of color and form as well as her use of both hand and machine-quilting in her work, she has accrued multiple awards and accolades, including Best of Show at Quilt National 2011 and Viewer’s Choice Award at Rio Parchwork Design.

Award - There will be a $250 Juror’s Choice award. The winner will be determined by the Jurors and will be announced during the First Friday reception.

Commissions - North Bank will retain 50% commission on all sales made in the course of the exhibit. Please reflect the commission rate in the retail price of the work.

Small Tapestry International 3: Outside the Line

The American Tapestry Alliance

The American Tapestry Alliance is pleased to announce Small Tapestry International 3: Outside the Line, a juried, international exhibition of small-scale tapestries. Artists are encouraged to explore the conceptual, technical and metaphorical implications of the theme, Outside the Line, as they develop work to submit.

Innovation and experimentation within the technique of handwoven tapestry are welcomed Outside the Line asks you to first consider the concept of line. Is it a geometric concept of “breadthless length” or a mark made in art? Is it an indication of boundaries, border or limits, or is it a course of action or policy? Is line a series of generations descended from a common ancestor or the words an actor says in a play? How do you express being outside the line?

Entry to STI3: Outside the Line is open to all tapestry artists who design and weave their own tapestries (defined as “hand-woven, weft-faced fabric with discontinuous wefts”), either individually or collaboratively (all assistants shall be named). Multimedia work will be considered as long as the primary medium is tapestry. Entries must be one-of-a-kind and have been completed after January 2011. Entries may not have been shown previously in any ATA exhibition, including the Unjuried Small Format show. Artists may submit up to three pieces, but a maximum of one piece per artist will be accepted.

The Wearable Art Awards is not a fashion show, it is a multi-media performance where the human body becomes a living, breathing, moving canvas. We are looking for more than a “pretty dress.” We are asking you to go deep into your imagination to create a wearable piece of art that challenges what most consider to be wearable, or everyday fashion.

The Wearable Art Awards is committed to challenging artists of all mediums to push their imaginations to create evocative, imaginative and thought provoking sculpture for the human body.

An entry must fall into one of the following three form-based categories. Cash prizes will be presented to category winners as determined by the jury.

• Headdress
• Brassiere
• Complete Outfit

All entries will be juried based on the following criteria:
• Complete entry forms, images and fees received by deadline
• All entries must be wearable, and able to withstand being put on and off our models multiple times for photo shoots, fittings and performances

The Fiber & Textile Arts Award is a one-year scholarship for the 2012-2013 academic year. Sponsored by Toni Neil, the 2012 amount to be awarded is $2,000 each to two students. The award is for tuition and fees and will be paid directly to the school in the student’s name.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT: Students eligible to apply must be currently enrolled and seeking a fiber arts, textile, or fiber-related undergraduate or graduate degree. All eligible students will be enrolled in school on at least a half-time basis.

TO APPLY: All eligible applicants must send an application—to be completed by both the student and the financial aid officer at the school (required to show proof of enrollment and financial status), an essay, at least one and no more than three letters of recommendation, and 3-5 digital images of their work. Applicants who have received the award in past years are required to send a copy of their grades for all periods since the award, including the award period.

ESSAY: The essay must be on a separate sheet, be no more than 500 words. Suggested topics: Why are you seeking this degree? What do you hope to achieve? Describe your goals and dreams.

DIGITAL IMAGES: Please send 3-5 digital images representing at least 3 works. These works must be done by the applicant.

SUBMISSIONS: You are required to email all digital images. (Text)iles: Fibrous Languages in Art concentrates on the diverse network of languages found in fiber art. It approaches the materials and overall medium of fiber art as its own language, with regional dialects and discipline specific vernacular.

What do fibers and textiles say for us and about us? How do they express feelings through color, texture, and materials?

Qualified Artwork:
In exploring the languages and conversations fiber art can represent or evoke, artists should feel free to play with word or text to show how fiber, cloth, or material express their artistic voice. The exhibition asks artists to use the medium of fiber art to communicate anything they want.

Additionally, artists are encouraged to experiment with how poetics and personal exploration are conveyed through fiber arts. The use of traditional and non-traditional materials and techniques that write and share their regional, global, and cultural voice are welcomed.

Flavia S. Zúñiga-West, is a Los Angeles based independent curator and artist consultant.

Project Background
Sprint currently leases retail space in the iconic Flatiron Building in New York City, NY, located at 175 5th Avenue. Included in the retail space is what is euphemistically called “the cow catcher” (referred to from this point on as “the prow” of the building). It is an enclosed, triangularly shaped space, composed of 6 foot tall panes of glass on two sides, terminating to the north in curved point. The space is bordered by 5th Avenue on its west side and a new pedestrian park on its east side. The Flatiron building anchors the south end of Madison Square.

Sprint Corporation is requesting artist/design students to submit proposals for a unique temporary art project for this space. Sprint seeks to select a qualified artist (or artist team) with a body of work and conceptual approach that demonstrates artistic excellence and appropriateness for the location and vision, taking into account the volume of visitors to this space and the iconic nature of the building, along with the Sprint brand.

The goal is to utilize this space to engage the community and provide a different experience above and beyond typical New York City retail windows/displays, expanding the manner in which retail and art is perceived. The tie-in to Sprint’s brand and products would be complimentary to the project.

Overall Background
The selected display will be temporary in nature and will remain in the space for a period of 10-12 weeks. The art/display selected should engage passers-by, both New Yorkers and tourists alike.

Artist should consider the iconic nature of the building, the goal to engage and the Sprint Brand when considering concept.

There is no limitation with regard to medium; however special consideration should be taken in the use of materials, based on environment within the space. Due to the inordinate amount of glass in the prow, interior temperatures can fluctuate greatly, especially during hotter months. Heat and sunlight may have adverse effects on some materials if not realized prior to installation.

Note: there is heating/cooling equipment in the space

The prow space dimensions are included the appendix (see Prow Elevation)
Sprint will provide artists with a stipend of $1000 towards materials and installation costs.

Sprint will also provide a prepped “white” space ready for installation of the selected entry/display.

Access to the space is located within a larger Retail space that is currently a high traffic telecommunications retail store. Only authorized key holders have access to the space; meaning the space is secure and cannot be accessed without permission/authorization.

Response Requirements
The response must include the following:
1. Letter of interest
2. Identification and bio of personnel involved in project
3. Illustration/photographs/prototype of proposed display
4. Timeline for installation based on receipt of approval to proceed
5. Timeline for removal
6. References


Criteria for Selection
Sprint will be reviewing all submissions via a jury of selected individuals. Submissions will be considered based on the following:

 Appropriateness for location
 Inclusion of Sprint Branding
 Maintenance

Artists interested in devoted studio time to work are encouraged to apply for a residency in one of three departments: Printmaking, Paper & Book Arts, or Jewelry & Small Metals.
  • Applications are taken on an ongoing basis; proposals should be submitted at least six months prior to proposed arrival.
  • Applicants may request a particular block of time during the year
  • Artists may repeat residencies no more than once every five years.
  • Artists are expected to provide their own transportation and materials.
  • Although a stipend is not included with the residency, teaching opportunities may exist based upon applicant qualifications.
  • Housing is not provided; however, housing may be available depending on length and time of residency.

Artists experienced in printmaking are invited to apply for the opportunity to spend up to 3 months working in the Flohr Print Studio at the Southwest School of Art, with access to studio equipment.

The artist is expected to work around scheduled classes and be comfortable, considerate and cooperative in an open studio environment. We will teach experienced intaglio printmakers non-toxic alternatives.

Paper & Book Arts Department
Artists experienced in letterpress, book arts and/or papermaking are invited to apply for the opportunity to work in the Picante Paper Studio and/or the Book Arts Studio. Residencies may last one week up to a semester in length. The program includes access to equipment in either or both studios.

Artists are expected to work around scheduled classes and be comfortable, considerate and cooperative in an open studio environment. The studios have limited storage space and artists are expected to clean work area at the end of the day. Hours of access vary through the year. Collaborations will be considered.

Jewelry & Small Metals
Artists experienced in contemporary metalsmithing/jewelry design are invited to apply for the opportunity to work in the Wilson Metals Studio. Artists may apply to spend up to 3 months.

The studio houses a wide variety of equipment and provides the resident with a semi-private workspace away from the main work area. The artist should still plan to work around class schedules however, and is expected to be cooperative within this community studio environment. A public presentation of the artist’s work will be scheduled during their stay.

Residency Application Requirements
Send a letter of application describing your project description or goals of your studio residency to the appropriate department. This letter should also include:

Résumé, including complete contact information.
CDs of your work relating to your interests, or online links.
Contact information for two references familiar with your artistic qualifications.
Suggested dates you would like to schedule your residency.
Collaborations should include a statement of how the artists will work together. (Please specify one contact person.)

The Beans for Brains Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship for students attending an accredited and approved institution of higher education.

The scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors, undergraduate, graduate and professional school students in any course of study.

For the coming award year, there are five $2,250 scholarships up for grabs, one of which is guaranteed to go to a Reno/Tahoe local (the other four awards will be distributed evenly among the four U.S. Regions). There will only be one winner per region. Your region is determined by your hometown.

Awards are merit-based and applications will be judged on GPA, extracurricular activities and essay quality. All application documents must be submitted in English.

“The felt of the shaman - on the footsteps of Joseph Beuys”

Felt artists and craftsm are invited to submit costumes, clothing accessories, wearable items for the event “The felt of the shaman - on the footsteps of Joseph Beuys” scheduled for Feltrosa 2012. The main material must be handmade wool felt, with the option of using all kind of techniques and to combine them with other materials and weaving techniques. Group projects are particularly appreciated.

The works will be exhibited at “Biella the Wool Company” in Miagliano (BI) until October 13, 2012. The exhibition will be opened on Saturday, May 19th at 5:30pm. A selected number of works will be worn for a performing act organized by the School of Contemporary Dance “Collettivo Duende” of Bologna, under the artistic direction of Annadora Scalone.

Joseph Beuys, German leading figure of the conceptual art scene between the 60s and the 80s, has left valuable evidence of his work in Italy: this is the case of the six boards held at the Palazzo della Penna in Perugia, which communicate with drawings and inscriptions the main topics of his poetic. For Beuys, the artist is like a shaman: his task is mediate between society and its evolutionary need of spiritual and material renewal, rather than produce aesthetic objects for the museum.

- Application is limited to E.U. residents
- There is no limit to the number of works submitted by each participant. Participation is free.
- The jury will consider applications examining two good quality photos, in jpg format. These photos can be used by organizers to promote the event.
- The work will be selected by an independent panel of jurors.

Year-long Online Exhibition
Opening: July 15, 2012

Art Kudos is an annual international juried competition that serves to recognize and honor excellence in the visual arts. Artists who are selected as finalists benefit from world-wide exposure in a year-long online exhibition ( and have the opportunity to win cash awards for their exemplary work.

Eligibility: The competition is open to artists anywhere in the world, 18 years of age or older. Publishers, galleries, agents, and collectors may not submit artwork on behalf of artists. Drawings, paintings, printmaking, photography, digital art, sculpture, installations, wood, glass, ceramics, fiber art and mixed media are eligible. Media not accepted: video/film, wearable art (clothing or jewelry). All works submitted must be original in design and concept. Artwork must not be copied, in part or wholly, from any published or copyrighted work. Work previously shown in an Art Kudos exhibition is ineligible. Please do not submit images which would be inappropriate for general audiences.

Awards: Exemplary works will be displayed in a year-long online exhibition at Cash awards totaling $4,400 will be distributed as follows: Best of Show - $1,200; Second Place - $900; Third Place - $750; Founder's Award of Distinction - $500; (3) Merit Awards - $250 each; (3) Honorable Mentions - $100 each.

Submission Guidelines: Artists must submit a completed entry form and pay a non-refundable entry fee of $30 US dollars (check, money order, or PayPal) to submit 3 images. For sculptural or three-dimensional pieces, artists may submit 2 views of each work (for a total of 6 images).
