apexart: Franchise Program

Deadline: February 28, 2015 {ONLINE}

Franchise Program
apexart

New York, NY

Based on the idea of creating a franchise, apexart holds a worldwide open call for proposals for group exhibitions to be presented anywhere in the world other than New York City. Annually we accept 500-word submissions outlining your idea for an exhibition.

Three winners selected by a jury will be the director, curator and/or staff of their own month-long apexart franchise with an $8,000 exhibition budget, a modest salary, and almost complete control. apexart provides the funding along with the necessary guidance and administrative support to make the curated exhibition happen.

Accepting submissions from February 1 - 28, 2015.

One of apexart's two curatorial open calls, the Franchise asks for submissions for exhibitions that examine a specific idea or theme. Exhibitions can be about anything that the organizer finds compelling and can take place anywhere other than NYC. Past shows have explored construction in Mexico City, community in Memphis, and translation in Kampala.

The Franchise is an opportunity to help bring a compelling idea to fruition and to illustrate that the center of the world is wherever you are. Please note that apexart is not a funding organization and exhibitions are part of apexart's regular programming.

2nd Annual Art in the Open Philadelphia

Deadline: February 28, 2011 (RECEIVE)

2nd Annual Art in the Open Philadelphia (AiO)

Schuylkill Banks
Philadelphia, PA
June 9-12, 2011

Art in the Open (AiO) is a citywide event that celebrates artists, their inspirations for creating art, and the process of art making in the urban environment. Through a transparent creative process open to everyone, AiO acts as a catalyst for a contemporary re-framing of the tradition of creating art en plein air (working outside, on-site), inspiring both artists and audience to see the river and city beyond in new ways.

Art in the Open 2011 will run from June 9-12 along the Schuylkill River Banks Park. A jury-selected group of 40 artists will have the opportunity to create new work in designated areas of the Park - from the Fairmount Water Works to Locust Street, and at Bartram’s Garden (AiO will provide additional geographic information to the artists before they begin). Depending on their own inclination or the nature and scale of their working media, the selected artists will be able to move freely within the designated areas or choose to stay in a single location. AiO artists will exhibit selected works created during the four day event in an exhibition after the main event.

Eligibility:

AiO is open to all professional artists (international entries are welcome) working in any medium that can be made 'outside, on site' during the four day event. Students and artists under the age of 21 are not eligible. An independent selection panel will select the participating artists based on the quality of their previous work and the idea presented in their AiO proposal.

Entry Fee: A non-refundable registration fee of $30

Jurors (Partial List):

Amy Lipton, East Coast Curator of ecoartspace, New York, NY
Stuart Shils, Artist and Faculty, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, PA
Andrew Suggs, Executive Director of Vox Populi, Philadelphia, PA

Artists’ Books on Tour

Registration Deadline: February 28, 2011 (EMAIL)

Artists’ Books on Tour
– Artist Competition and Mobile Museum

Touring exhibition:
Vienna: October 11th, 2011 – January 8th, 2012
Prague: January 16th – March 18th, 2012
Ljubljana: March 26th – May 31st, 2012

THE PROJECT
To create more public awareness for the book as an independent genre of art production, the EU-funded project “Artists’ Books on Tour – Artist Competition and Mobile Museum” was launched in June 2010 by the MAK – Austrian Museum of Applied Arts / Contemporary Art (Vienna) in cooperation with the MGLC – International Centre of Graphic Arts (Ljubljana) and the UPM – Museum of Decorative Arts (Prague). The core activities of the project cover:

• the implementation of a competition among European artists
• the evaluation of the results by an international jury awarding the best submissions
• the presentation of selected works in a “Mobile Museum” touring several European cities

THE COMPETITION
In order to bring visibility to contemporary developments in the field of artists’ books, we offer artists a platform to share their work within a unique all-European competition among book artists for the first time ever. We therefore invite artists to hand in their recent or planned art projects in the field: submissions will be accepted as completed physical or digital book objects or in the form of conceptual designs for projected but yet-unrealized book works. Outstanding works will be awarded a grant given by an international jury.

ELIGIBILITY
Artists of any age who live and work in Europe are eligible to enter the contest. Artist collectives may also apply. Please note that teams have to name one contact person (in the application form) and will be treated as a single person in the event of winning a prize (prize money will only be paid once).

SUBMISSION (truncated)
Submissions are accepted via postal mail or personal delivery. Please stick to the following application procedure:

1. Send a short registration e-mail to abot@mak.at by February 28th, 2011.
2. Fill in the application form online (www.abot.mak.at/applicationform) by May 2nd, 2011.

Task
The theme “Embroidered Living Space Construction” brings together embroidery technology and the 3rd dimension. Within the field architecture we are for example constructing for both outside and inside space. Our view of contemporary cities is seen through industrial development- constructive, clear lines, clean- transparent design elements, using construction materials such as concrete, steel, and glass. But not only in architecture can industrial development be seen, but also in machinery advancements in the expanding world of technical decorative design. Whether in the automobile industry, medicine, or advertising: embroidered textiles are everywhere often in combination with printed textiles and 3D forms, which are examples of contemporary achievement.

We are expecting presentations and material studies that make a statement, innovative embroidery technology that is functional and implies repeatability. The work should be machine produced. The design aspect is in the forefront along with the innovative product point through a free choice of materials and technologies. New materials and prototypes are not restricted.
