Deadline: before 1 June 2010 (EMAIL)
Registration form + Design form (email both before 1 JUNE 2010)
send together with the design by post between Monday June 28. – Saturday July 17. 2010
TRUE COLOURS
New Traditional Jewellery 2010
International Design Contest and Exhibition
Amersfoort, The Netherlands
Objective
The preservation of worldwide cultural heritage, the reassessment of symbol bearers, the creation of new traditions,
the revival of old traditions in a new form. This year (2010) participants are invited to design a piece of jewellery based on a new theme: True Colours
True Colours may be approached from a social perspective, society if full of topical colour coding. Other examples may be found in heraldry, folklore and science.
True Colours refers to colours and pigments. Over the centuries the palette of art history has been determined by precious mineralogical and biological pigments that were obtained from ground semi-precious stones, processed metals, and earth, seeds and plants – materials that did not always bear the test of time; in the course of time white lead, e.g. turned black.
The link between the theme ‘True Colours’ and contemporary jewellery design is obvious. From time immemorial the significance and appreciation of jewellery have been determined by colour, among other things. From the use of gold or silver to enamels and mineralogical and biological stones: colour is a language. In the seventies and eighties it became manifest how rich this language is. The application of textiles and Perspex in jewellery led to a new form language and use of colour – an important stage in the emancipation of contemporary jewellery design.
True Colours is about the history, meaning, value, magic and power of the language of colour.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS NEW TRADITIONAL JEWELLERY 2010
The group of potential contestants is distinguished into two categories:
Category A : established jewellery artists and silverdesigners
Category B : final-year and advanced students of all art academies and fourth-level students of the gold
and/or silversmith disciplines of training colleges, or comparable levels of part time education or evening classes
Each participant may submit only one finished piece of jewellery
The ornament should be wearable
The designs may not have been exhibited before nor seen/sold by third parties. Only ornaments made
specifically for this contest will be eligible for nomination.
Apart from the design the participant is also expected to supply an explanation of the underlying idea,
an inspirational text (no more than 15 lines) and a photograph of the source of inspiration.
All nominated designs will remain in the possession of the organization during all exhibitions and will
not be returned for the duration (2.5 years at the most)

HANGING BY A THREAD
Tales of disaster and survival
In April 1968 the inter island ferry Wahine headed into Cook Strait, loaded with passengers and freight. Among her various items of cargo - a small brilliantly coloured cocktail dress - lovingly packed in a suitcase. As the ferry came to its ill-fated end on Barrett’s Reef, the suitcase and dress were abandoned as its owner fled to safety on the last lifeboat.
Months later “out of the fuel oil, the slimy silt and rust of the Wahine’s hold,” the dress was rescued and restored to its former glory - its miraculous recovery attributed to the survivalist properties of pure wool. To the promoters of wool this story was not only of the survival of a woman and her favourite party dress, but ammunition for an industry fighting to survive the synthetic revolution and willing to exploit every promotional opportunity at its disposal, even a national disaster.
Historically, and within current practice, costume and textiles are synonymous with survival, and are certainly no stranger to disaster. The 2010 New Zealand Costume and Textile Association conference will address the perilous theme of Hanging by a Thread. We look forward to receiving moving, inspirational, and thought provoking papers that tell tales of disaster and survival.

Hello, Goodbye and Thanks A LOT!
Hello Readers:
This is it!—the first OFFICIAL message to you in my capacity as Editor in Chief of Fiber Art Calls for Entry.
When THE KEEPER asked me to "take over the reins" of this blog, I jumped at the opportunity. Since its inception, I have worked quietly behind the scenes so it is an honor and thrill to guide the next phase of the site's development. In coming weeks, stylistic CHANGES WILL BE MADE but the overall purpose and focus shall remain the same.
Upon learning of THE KEEPER's departure, several FACFE readers sent notes...here are a few snippets:
I also wish to extend my thanks to THE KEEPER. It's been a joy sharing this journey with you. May you find peace in all that you do.
Namaste.

The Weatherspoon Art Museum is currently accepting submissions for its biennial exhibition, Art on Paper 2010, which will be held from November 7, 2010 – February 6, 2011. This exhibition presents a broad range of contemporary art in which the use of paper, either as a surface or material, is a primary consideration. Art on Paper 2010 represents a forty-five year partnership between the Weatherspoon and xpedx (formerly the Dillard Paper Company), whose long-standing sponsorship of Art on Paper has allowed the Weatherspoon to acquire a number of works from each year’s exhibition. Since 1965, The Dillard Fund has fostered the growth of the Weatherspoon’s nationally recognized Dillard Collection of Art on Paper, which today numbers close to 550 works.
REQUIREMENTS AND ELIGIBILITY

• Artists whose work was included in Art on Paper 2008 or who are currently enrolled students are ineligible to apply.

METROPOLIS Next Generation 2010
Deadline: January 29, 2010 at 11:59 p.m. PST (Online)
2010 METROPOLIS Next Generation
Design Competition
Winner announced in May 2010
Good design determines how well products, spaces, and systems work from the beginning. We think that great design ideas can make things work even better. One Design Fix for the Future challenges you to prove us right—whether you are an architect, interior designer, product designer, landscape designer, graphic designer, communication designer. We’re looking for ONE design fix you can make now in your designed environment—the products you use, your home, your workplace, your city, or any commercial application—that, in scale or as inspiration, can improve our future.
To enter, provide one small (but brilliant and elegant) fix—leading to an incremental (or dramatic) change in sustainability. Your fix needn’t have anything to do with “environmentalist engineering” to make a difference. Concentrate on what you know best, are aching to improve in a way that deploys your training and imagination.
Eligibility
The Next Generation Design Competition is open to any designer or architect in practice for ten years or less, as well as design students. The $10,000 prize is intended to support designers whose entries reflect systems thinking, sustainability, accessibility, materials exploration, technology, and historic relevance. Each designer should speak to any one of the six sub-disciplines supported by the magazine—architecture, urban planning, landscape design, interior design, product design, graphic design. Employees of Sponsors are not eligible. All entrants agree to be bound by the Official Rules.
Entry Fee & Deadline
The entry fee is $75 for each submission. All entries must be submitted by January 29, 2010, at 11:59 p.m. PST Residents of the following states by law are not required to pay an entry fee: AZ, CT, MD, ND, and VT.
Maximum Number of Submissions
Up to three submissions will be accepted from an individual or team of collaborators. A separate application and entry fee is required for each project submitted.
Submission Process
Projects must be submitted electronically via the online submission form. Metropolis will not accept mailed materials.
Judging
A panel of judges, representing a broad range of design disciplines, will choose the winner and up to fifteen (15) runners-up during the month of February 2010. The winner and runners-up will be notified by telephone or email. Judges’ decisions are final.

A Time of Change
This blog was started (nearly 4 years ago) with the intent of providing easy access to Fiber/Textile focused opportunities for artists. There have been a few "fits and starts” along the way but we achieved our goal and even continued to evolve. The next stage of our development brings the following changes:
We now join you on the other side by becoming READERS of this fine blog. Thanks for taking the journey with us.
Cheers,
The Keeper
- The Keeper is bowing out. It's been a good run but it's time to move on to other projects. The reins have been handed over to a very good friend — Elise N. — who shall guide FACFE from this point forward.
- Fiber Art Calls for Entry shall no longer be sponsored by Art Craft Design Culture. Our friends (who are also in transition) have been very good to us. Their support has been invaluable. We thank them and wish them well.
- The focus of the blog shall remain the same but expect additions and enhancements to the overall experience.
We now join you on the other side by becoming READERS of this fine blog. Thanks for taking the journey with us.
Cheers,
The Keeper

Lulan Artisans Design Competition
Deadline: December 15, 2009 (RECEIVE) (Online)
Lulan Artisans
Design Competition
Charleston, S.C.
Note: This Competition is intended to produce designs that will be included in Lulan Artisans 2010 textile collection, as well as populate a database of Creative Commons designs that weaving cooperatives around the world can use to increase their ability to make a sustainable living and be less at risk of poverty. As set forth in detail below, the prize is the sole payment that each winner shall receive from Sponsor and each winner must agree to transfer all right, title and interest in their entry to Sponsor in exchange for receiving any prize from Sponsor. No further royalties of any kind shall be owed to any winner. If this is unacceptable to you, then do not enter this Competition.
Competition Brief (truncated)
Lulan Artisans is looking for new and innovative designs that will help Lulan to continue to stand out in the market and that will be produced using traditional techniques and construction methods. We would like designs that highlight the weavers’ skills by focusing on the “woven by hand” aspect of production while still incorporating the contemporary modern aesthetic as Lulan currently does.
Lulan is primarily interested in receiving designs that are:
Structural weaves
Ikat designs
Block-print designs
We may also consider designs that focus on:
Embroidery
Supplementary weft
Fiber content: The winning designs that will be added to Lulan Artisans’ collection will be made of organic cotton and/or linen.
Most designs may be used to create an upholstery-weight fabric, while others will be considered for lighter weight for drapery use, apparel use or throws. A variety of applications will come from each design and the differing weight of these textiles.
Schedule
The Lulan Artisans Textile Competition 2009 starts on Monday June 1, 2009 and ends on Sunday, December 15, 2009. Entries may be submitted at any time during this time period.
Winners will be notified in February 2010 and announced in March 2010.
Rules (truncated)
Eligibility: Open to entrants 18 years or older. All Entries must be the original creation of the entrant.
Judging: All entries will be judged based on the following criteria, each of which will be equally weighted: aesthetics, innovation, contemporary fit with Lulan design sensibility, durability, functionality and marketability (“Judging Criteria”).
Sponsor plans to select three winning entries, but Sponsor reserves the right to select less winners should entries not meet the judging criteria or more winners should the judges in their sole discretion decide that more than three entries meet the criteria and needs of Sponsor’s 2010 textile collection.
Prizes: Sponsor will select three winning entries. Each winner will receive a prize of U.S. $1,500.
