Submission Guidelines (truncated see pdf for complete instructions)

Design submissions:

1. All designs must be original, not previously published, and not under review with any other company or editor, even within DRG Publishing Group. Choose the publication you feel is best for your design and submit it only to that editor for their review. We do not accept simultaneous submissions.

2. Send your submission as: (1) proposal sketch with swatches; (2) finished design(s); or (3) photo. Please be sure to send and present your submissions with care so they are seen in the best possible light. Please write a few sentences to tell us about your design’s special features and what inspired you to create it.

3. Please include: a check or money order for return shipping, product labels for all materials used in your design(s) and, for finished designs, typed instructions with all necessary charts and graphs; it is not necessary to include the completed instructions for design(s) submitted as photos, sketches or swatches at this time.

E-mail, photo or swatch submissions:
To eliminate postage concerns, we recommend e-mail submissions for unsolicited designs.

1. Only send your images in the jpg, gif or pdf format. Files sent in any format other than jpg, gif or pdf will be automatically rejected.

2. Please keep in mind that image quality of e-mail and photo submissions is important. There is a 2 MB limit.

3. Design proposals should be well-written with a clear description of what the idea is, and include neat swatches and sketches. Your presentation matters.

4. Only submit projects that are, in fact, available; if you wish to submit a design(s) that has been given as a gift, make that information known. When an image of a finished project is sent in, we will assume it is immediately available for publication.

5. We will generally request to see the design(s) in person before accepting it; requesting to see the design(s) does not guarantee acceptance for publication.

Article submissions:

1. Articles submitted to Crochet! magazine should be between 1,000 to 2,000 words in length. Articles submitted to Annie’s Hooked on Crochet! should be between 300-600 words in length.

2. All manuscripts and proposals must be original and not under review with any other company or editor, even within DRG Publishing Group. Please make the editor aware if your article was previously published, even if only First Rights or North American Serial Rights were purchased.

3. If submitting a proposal, please be sure all sources are accurate and you will, in fact, be able to write the piece. For example, if your article depends on an interview, please secure the permission of the subject before submitting your proposal. Your proposal also needs to be well-written with a clear description of your idea; this is a very short introduction to your writing style, so be aware that a poorly written proposal could affect its acceptance.

4. Proposals and manuscripts must be typed in the document (.doc), rich text (.rtf) or text (.txt) format.

5. Include all charts, illustrations or photos necessary for use in the article.

6. Also include a few sentences telling us about your article; why this is something the crochet community would be interested in and what inspired you to write it.

Design and article review:

1. Reviews are held according to the publication’s editorial calendar, which is available upon request. Your submission(s) must be in our offices before the scheduled review date to be considered. If your submission(s) does not arrive in time, or if we deem the submission(s) more fitting for a later issue, it will be held for consideration at the next scheduled review.

2. If we accept your submission(s), we will contact you within two weeks after the review date, if possible.

3. Unaccepted designs will be returned within four weeks after the review date, if possible.

Writing for Sew News

Deadline: Ongoing
(see editorial calendar for specific dates)

Writing for Sew News

Sew News magazine is a monthly publication devoted to the enthusiastic and creative woman who wants to sew. We provide her with accurate, helpful, step-by-step information for personalizing ready-to-wear and creating original fashions, accessories, gifts and home décor that express her personal style.

What We Want

Articles should teach a specific technique, inspire the reader to try a project, introduce the reader to a new product or company related to sewing, or inform the reader about current fashion and sewing trends. Sew News' primary focus is garment sewing for women, but we also include stories on sewing for men, children and specialty groups like senior citizens, plus sizes, petites and the handicapped. We also cover home décor, soft crafts, machine embroidery, and various fabric embellishment methods, such as stamping, painting, beading and stenciling. Emphasis should always involve sewing, fabrics or notions in some way. Sew News does not normally cover areas like hand weaving, hand needlecrafts, crochet, knitting or macramé. When glue is used in place of sewing, the glue technique should only be a tip or sidebar–not the intended method of construction.

Acceptance/Payment

We will contact you and let you know if we are interested (or not) in your query. When an article is accepted, you'll be sent an assignment sheet detailing what is expected of you for the assignment and the intended payment (from $50 to $500, new writers generally $50 to $150, depending on the length and complexity of the subject, and the garment(s), samples, photography, illustrations or sources to be supplied).
All articles, including those specifically assigned, are written "on speculation." All payments will be made upon publication.

In all cases, Sew News reserves the right to edit, rewrite and cut articles where necessary.

Deadlines

Deadlines are established when a story is assigned.

Contracts

Sew News requires original unpublished content and gives first consideration to those authors. Sew News, as part of CK Media, requires an "all rights" contract to be signed before publication of any article. "All rights" means Sew News purchases complete rights to the manuscript, art and specific project covered in the contract and that the submitted items may not be used in conjunction with any other article in another publication.

These rights apply to specific projects, but not to individual techniques. For example, when a writer signs a Sew News "all rights" contract for an article on a machine-embroidered jacket, he/she may not allow the particulars of that project to be published anywhere else. However, he/she may publish another article on machine embroidery, including an article on a machine-embroidered jacket, as long as it's neither the same jacket nor the same embroidery designs.

How to Submit Story Queries

We have a small staff. Therefore, we request you query by letter or e-mail; do not send finished manuscripts. Your query should consist of a brief outline of the article, a sketch or photo of the intended project, a list of the illustrations or photographs you envision with it, an explanation of why your proposed article would be of interest to the Sew News reader, and why you are qualified to write it. Keep in mind the season and timeliness of your suggestions, remembering that Sew News works on a six-month lead time.

Send your queries to sewnews@sewnews.com or

Sew News Editor
741 Corporate Circle, Ste. A.,
Golden, CO 80401

The Sew News staff considers queries and makes story assignments continuously. All queries are considered and, within a reasonable amount of time, you'll either receive an assignment, a request to hold the query for further consideration, or a rejection. If more than three months have passed without a reply to your query, feel free to e-mail requesting its status. Direct e-mail questions regarding assignments to Ellen Marchant, emarchant@ckmedia.com.

World of WearableArt™

Two Deadlines:
May 1, 2008 (New Zealand) (RECEIVE)
May 9, 2008 (International) (RECEIVE)

World of WearableArt™
Wellington, New Zealand
20 – 30 September 2008

Step into a world where art and the human form combine, where dance, music and lighting tell a story of the body as a canvas; where the lines of fashion and art blur and merge as one…

WOW® is a two hour show held annually in September in Wellington, New Zealand to an audience of 30,000 per season. First shown in 1987, World of WearableArt originally began as a promotion for a rural art gallery in Nelson. Nelson sculptor Suzie Moncrieff had the vision to exhibit art in the form of a live theatrical show – and WOW® has since grown to receive international acclaim.

Designers of WearableArt™ garments are challenged to create something completely original, a garment that has impact on the 40+ metre stage, is impressive up close, is constructed to withstand the movement of individual choreography and has that overall ‘WOW Factor’. Although many entrants to the Montana WOW® Awards are professional artists and designers, there is no requirement that entrants have a fine art qualification, or have won acceptance in their art field before they can put their work forward. The Awards’ ‘non-elitist’ approach appeals to entrants from all walks of life.

WOW® offers the opportunity for designers to experiment with materials and new methods, to push boundaries and think outside the square without commercial expectations or the limits of everyday fashion.

Entry Criteria

Judging
Garments are judged on originality, creativity, innovation and construction. All entries will be considered by the judges at the preliminary judging when entries will be selected for inclusion in the show. Entries are modelled.

Judges’ retain the right to move garments to different sections and recommend accessory additions and/or deletions.

The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
Judging is “blind” - the Judges are told the garments name and inspiration not the designer’s name.

Entry Construction Requirements
When designing your work remember it will be exhibited in a fully choreographed performance, therefore ensure:
  • Garment is of sound construction.

  • Hats are fitted and well balanced, strap under chin may be appropriate.

  • Electrical wiring is safe and simple to operate.

  • Garment is safe to wear with no sharp edges.

  • Garment is not excessively heavy.

  • Hot glue, staples, or tape are not relied on to hold materials together.

  • Lacing of garment must withstand quick changes (suggest elastic or velcro).

2008 Special Awards

There are seven sections. Each section (with the exception of the Bizarre Bra® Section) has NZ$8,000 worth of prize money; Section Winner NZ$5,000, Runner Up NZ$2,000, Commended NZ$1,000

HP Children’s Section: Theme ‘Reinvent/Reinterpret the TUTU’

Recreate the theatrical drama of the ballet TUTU turning inventive ideas & interesting materials into a work of art to adorn the body.

Air New Zealand South Pacific Section

Gather inspiration from New Zealand’s rich Maori culture and the traditional cultures of our South Pacific neighbours. Celebrate what it is like to live in New Zealand and the South Pacific –the sea, beach, flora, fauna, birds, insects etc and the wide and wonderful personalities of our unique cultures.

Tourism New Zealand Avant Garde Section

Where art and fashion collide! Create WearableArt™ garments that are revolutionary, extravagant and extrovert, but still stylish and made with skill. Be driven by dreams and fantasies, not commercial reality.

American Express Open Section

This section has no thematic boundaries and gives the designer complete freedom in concept, construction and materials. This section encourages a high degree of originality and innovation.

AT&T Illumination Illusion®: Theme: ‘The Magic of Performance Art’

Gather your inspiration from dance, theatre, puppetry, masks etc and using the magic illusion of UV light to create a garment to perform in and WOW® the audience. For example the body can be the focus by covering it in UV material or it can remain unseen by blacking it out. Use attachments (e.g. black painted kite rod) to float objects out from the body or to achieve the magic of revealing and concealing.

Please note you may use up to three models per entry. Use any UV colour or just plain black and white. Self-lit garments are not permitted in this section. Entries must be made from materials / paints which glow in the dark under UV light – material suggestions: nylon, tulle, elastic, cotton, nylon lycra, acetate lining, UV spray paints etc.

CentrePort ‘Inspired by Architecture’ Section

Explore the connection between fashion & architecture using the body as the landscape. Gather your inspiration from the great architectural guru’s e.g. Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas or Fashion Designers e.g. Alexander McQueen, Hussein Chalayan, Issey Myake and Gareth Pugh. Look to the ancient world of architecture from Gothic to Greek, or more recently Victorian to Art Deco. Be inspired by the indigenous cultures of the world, or create futuristic architectural concepts still to be built.

Bra® Section

Though normally hidden, the bra has shown itself in past Montana WOW® Awards to have enormous potential for highly creative and witty reinvention. Garments must be bra only and not include accessories. Entry must be a bra that fits the breast, not a bustier. (See brochure for awards in this section).

International Entry Information

WOW® has been delighted to accept designs from all over the world, including Australia, Canada, Singapore, Thailand, India, Israel, Dubai, United Kingdom, United States of America and Japan. WOW® is always excited to welcome international designers and their different techniques, ideas and inspirations.

International entrants are automatically eligible for Wellington International Award which recognises the best international entry – winner receives NZ$5,000.

Public Artist Image Bank
Utah Public Art Program (UPA)

The Utah Public Art Program (UPA) maintains an image bank of Utah artists' work in all visual media that are interested in public art commissions. Resident Utah artists are included in this slide bank for consideration in selected projects and as a resource for architects, corporations, individuals and other agencies seeking artists to create public works. While the image bank is for Utah artists only, most of the Utah Public Art Program projects are open to all artists living in Utah and anywhere in the United States.

The image bank is a valuable tool for locating artists that are interested in public art projects in Utah. The bank is sorted by medium (sculpture, painting, glass, ceramic, multi-media, etc.) Please call us at the Public Art Program to set up an appointment to view the image bank.

For Utah artists interested in having their work included in the Utah Public Art Program's image bank please click below to download the registration form. Please include no more than one CD with up to 10 images in PC compatible format with an accompanying identification sheet. RFQ: The University of Nebraska – Physical Science Building

Deadline: December 5, 2007, 5:00 p.m. (Postmark) & (Hand Delivery)

Request for Qualifications
The University of Nebraska Department of Physical Science
Nebraska Arts Council
Budget: $253,000

ELIGIBILITY

This Request for Qualifications (RFQ) project competition is open to all professional publicartists or artist teams, including those who are new to the field of public art, from throughout the United States. Artists from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply for this project.

RFQ SUMMARY

The University of Nebraska – Lincoln Department of Physics and Astronomy, in accordance with the State of Nebraska One Percent for Art legislation, seeks artwork for the new Physical Science building, which is presently in the planning phase of construction on the campus of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, in Lincoln, Nebraska. The Physical Science Artwork Selection Committee has been formed to administer this process.

The artwork requirement envisions one major interior project, the South Atrium Aerial/Wall-Hung Installation/Sculpture (BUDGET: $253,000).

This artwork will enhance the student and visitor's experience of the Physical Science building architecture and the research and learning environment.

UNL PHYSICAL SCIENCE ARTWORK PROJECT

THEME

The new Physical Sciences Building offers an excellent opportunity for the artist to create a work that is integrated into the architectural space of its entrance atrium. While reference to the type of work occurring in proximity to this space (atomic physics, nanotechnology, and high energy particle physics) would not be inappropriate, we emphasize that we wish to obtain "art," and not "scientific art." The aesthetic statement made by the artist is more important than an identifiable allusion to some scientific idea or theme.

BUDGET

South Atrium Aerial/Wall Installation/Sculpture (Primary Site)
and North Atrium Aerial Installation/Sculpture (Optional Secondary
Site): $253,000

SELECTION PROCESS

Selections will be made by the Physical Science Art Selection Committee, composed of college representatives, in consultation with Nebraska Arts Council and UNL Facilities Planning and Construction.

The committee will review submissions from this RFQ and either select an artist based on preliminary submission materials, or pursue more detailed proposals from a short list of selected applicants. Honoraria for costs associated with proposals will be provided.

The following factors will be considered when reviewing submissions:
• Quality of work
• Appropriateness of subject/concept for the site
• Past exhibition/public art record
• Previous commission experience, including evidence that past commissions were
produced in accordance with agreed-upon timelines and within budget
• Permanence and safety, meeting all relevant codes required for
public places, and
offering reasonable proof of soundness against theft, vandalism or excessive
maintenance and repair

From the Message Box: Thanksgiving

Hello:

Today is a holiday for our American readers and subscribers. Happy Thanksgiving!

I am thankful for MANY things--not least of which is THIS blog. Fiber Art Calls for Entry started as a personal offline project but over time the lists just GREW. Since I knew there were other artists (from emerging to established) in search of places to exhibit their work, I decided to put the lists online.

Our initial association was with ArtQuilts at the Sedgwick, the biennial art quilt exhibition. However, just as that show was morphing into Art Quilt Elements, I felt it was time for Fiber Art Calls for Entry to broaden its focus and move in a different direction.

The blog is still fiber centered but we are very interested in cross pollination of media and disciplines. Therefore, we are now associated with Art Craft Design Culture--a show designed to encompass what we value so highly.

As always, more to come....

Peace and Harmony,

The Keeper

November 20, 2007

Hello Readers and Subscribers:

This site has been under restricted access for the past few days. We apologize for the inconvenience. We were experiencing incompatibility issues with our new template that could not be resolved. Thus, we opted to use the "stock" template--Washed Denim--instead. We are customizing the layout to fit our needs so you'll witness a few more changes over the next few days.

It is our goal to be a valuable resource so we are working to introduce new features that will enhance your experience when visiting this site. We've integrated Google Calendar (GCal) so readers can search for opportunities by deadline date using the week, month or agenda mode. Since we are rather keen on having a complete record of all the opportunites posted on this site, archived items are still in the process of being added to the calendar. As of this writing, there is no easy way to integrate items without dates into GCal so Ongoing/Unspecified opportunites can be viewed by clicking the label below the post or the link on the sidebar.

Although New Blogger makes creating categories (aka labels and tags) easy, there are OVER 700 items in our archives. Therefore, labeling is still incomplete but we hope to have that finished before the end of the month.

Thanks for your patience with this process.

Peace and Harmony,

The Keeper

Boston, MA

Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC) is offering Artist Fellowships for 2008. The 2008 Artist Fellowship program guidelines and application are now available.

Applications will be accepted in the following disciplines:

- Choreography
- Drawing (includes printmaking/artist books)
- Fiction/Creative Nonfiction writing
- Painting
- Poetry
- Traditional Arts
  • Discipline Definitions (Complete List)

  • DRAWING
Eligible for review in the 2008 cycle. This category includes work created using the techniques, materials, media, and methods of drawing and printmaking, collage, artists' books, and two-dimensional computer-generated work. Artists whose work predominantly involves painting, including watercolorists, should apply to the Painting category. Work completed prior to 2004 is ineligible.

    TRADITIONAL ARTS
Eligible for review in the 2008 cycle. This category accepts work in the traditional arts - including music, craft, dance, verbal arts - created and preserved within communities defined by cultural connections such as a common ethnic heritage, language, religion, occupation, or geographic area. Whether sung or told, handcrafted or performed, traditional art forms reflect a community's shared sense of aesthetic heritage. The folk and traditional arts typically are learned during the course of daily living from someone steeped in the tradition, rather than through books, classes, or other means of institutional instruction.

This Artist Grant category is for individuals not groups. For more information, please contact Maggie Holtzberg, Folk Arts & Heritage Program Manager, at 617-727-3668 x254 or maggie.holtzberg@art.state.ma.us

MCC is a state agency that promotes excellence, access, education and diversity in the arts, humanities, and interpretive sciences to improve the quality of life for all Massachusetts residents and contribute to the economic vitality of our communities.

Visual arts applications (Drawing and Painting) now require digital images, uploaded directly into the application, rather than 35-mm slides.

Artist Fellowships recognize exceptional artistic work and fund artists in a variety of disciplines. Applications are judged through a blind-panel process (with the exception of Traditional Arts) and discipline categories rotate according to fiscal year.

We're putting the finishing touches on our latest knitting book, Picture Perfect Knits by Laura Birek, and want to see your ideas. Winners will also receive a free copy of the book when it comes out next fall.
