Boston, MA

Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC) is offering Artist Fellowships for 2008. The 2008 Artist Fellowship program guidelines and application are now available.

Applications will be accepted in the following disciplines:

- Choreography
- Drawing (includes printmaking/artist books)
- Fiction/Creative Nonfiction writing
- Painting
- Poetry
- Traditional Arts
  • Discipline Definitions (Complete List)

  • DRAWING
Eligible for review in the 2008 cycle. This category includes work created using the techniques, materials, media, and methods of drawing and printmaking, collage, artists' books, and two-dimensional computer-generated work. Artists whose work predominantly involves painting, including watercolorists, should apply to the Painting category. Work completed prior to 2004 is ineligible.

    TRADITIONAL ARTS
Eligible for review in the 2008 cycle. This category accepts work in the traditional arts - including music, craft, dance, verbal arts - created and preserved within communities defined by cultural connections such as a common ethnic heritage, language, religion, occupation, or geographic area. Whether sung or told, handcrafted or performed, traditional art forms reflect a community's shared sense of aesthetic heritage. The folk and traditional arts typically are learned during the course of daily living from someone steeped in the tradition, rather than through books, classes, or other means of institutional instruction.

This Artist Grant category is for individuals not groups. For more information, please contact Maggie Holtzberg, Folk Arts & Heritage Program Manager, at 617-727-3668 x254 or maggie.holtzberg@art.state.ma.us

MCC is a state agency that promotes excellence, access, education and diversity in the arts, humanities, and interpretive sciences to improve the quality of life for all Massachusetts residents and contribute to the economic vitality of our communities.

Visual arts applications (Drawing and Painting) now require digital images, uploaded directly into the application, rather than 35-mm slides.

Artist Fellowships recognize exceptional artistic work and fund artists in a variety of disciplines. Applications are judged through a blind-panel process (with the exception of Traditional Arts) and discipline categories rotate according to fiscal year.
