The Center for Book Arts: Exhibition Proposals

Deadline: Ongoing/Unspecified

Exhibition Proposals
The Center for Book Arts
New York, NY

The Center for Book Arts invites curators to submit exhibition proposals for our Main Gallery. There is no deadline: proposals are reviewed by the Center’s Exhibition Committee three or four times a year, however, the exhibition schedule is planned at least 15 months in advance.

This Exhibition Series is intended to provide contemporary interpretations of the book as an art object and/or related media, as well as to challenge traditional notions of the book arts. Exhibitions that feature a broad representation of media, site-specific installations, and performances are encouraged. The Exhibitions Committee is especially interested in proposals for:

• Exhibitions that will further and/or challenge the discourse of book arts within a contemporary artistic criticism, particularly theme based explorations
• Exhibitions that will advance the field of traditional bookmaking practices, particularly by showing a wide range of artists
• Focused exhibitions of two to three artists that demonstrates a cohesive artistic trend or subject matter

The committee will review up to 20 images of work that is representative of the work you plan to include in the exhibition.

Application questions should be addressed to Alexander Campos, Executive Director, at acampos@centerforbookarts.org. Curators are strongly encouraged to discuss their application prior to submitting for review.

If accepted, the Center will provide the following (truncated):

  1. A Curator’s honorarium.

  2. Public relations for the exhibition including an invitation, a press release/alert, and website updates.

  3. An opening reception.

  4. Shipping of artworks that have been agreed upon by Staff.

  5. A small brochure/catalogue

  6. A venue for two public programs with honorariums for participating artists.

  7. Installation budget which covers standard lighting, painting, and maintenance—no new equipment.

The Center for Book Arts receives a commission of 25% of each work sold. These commissions are used to support The Center’s programs. Only for work available to be purchased with proper permission by owner/artist.

While on display, all work is fully insured by The Center for Book Arts.
