Quilt National '09 is the sixteenth in the series of biennial international juried competitions dedicated to promoting the contemporary quilt as an art form. For more than 30 years, Quilt National has showcased the most exciting and innovative trends in the medium. The jurors will select approximately 85 works that represent unique approaches to the medium and that demonstrate the breadth and diversity of contemporary expressions.
Jury:
Sue Benner (Dallas, Texas)
Katie Pasquini Masopust (Santa Fe, New Mexico)
Ned Wert (Pennsylvania)
Work will be juried on originality, design, technique, and craftsmanship. Jurors will select no more than one work by an artist. Jurors will grant preliminary acceptance on the basis of the digital images. Final acceptance will be granted after a jurors' representative has the opportunity to examine the work itself.
Awards
The jurors will grant the following awards for Quilt National '09:
$1,500 - Best of Show
In kind* - Quilts Japan Prize
$ 1,200 - Award of Excellence
$ 850 - Most Innovative Use of the Medium
$ 500 - Persistence Pays Award
$ 500 - McCarthy Memorial Award
$ 500 - Cathy Rasmussen Emerging Artist Memorial Award
$ 350 - Lynn Goodwin Borgman Award for Surface Design
$ 300 - Brakensiek "Caught our Eye" Award
$ 250 - Heartland Prize
$150 - People's Choice Award
*Quilts Japan Prize
Sponsored by Nihon Vogue Corporation, this award is intended as an expression of gratitude for the teaching and guidance that American quilters have given to Japanese quilters. The recipient will travel to and lecture in several Japanese cities.
