The Masterworks Foundation: Artist in Residence Programme
Deadline: January 15, 2011 (POSTMARK)
ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAMME
The Masterworks Foundation
The Botanical Gardens
Paget, Bermuda
2012 Season
Since 1996 Masterworks has been introducing Bermuda to a variety of different foreign artists and their diverse works. In the past, these artists have hailed from the UK, USA, Canada, Jamaica, France, Bulgaria, Spain and Siberia.
Every year, the Artist in Residence Programme invites four artists to the island for three months each to create works of art inspired by Bermuda’s beauty. Artists are housed in a historic building in the UNESCO Heritage town of St. George’s, in a lower apartment with a nearby separate studio space and are also supplied with a bus and ferry pass for transport. Their works are showcased in a local exhibition, and one piece is donated to the Masterworks Collection.
The Artist in Residence Programme is designed to introduce Bermuda to the skills and knowledge of the visiting artists via the museum’s art education programmes. Artists may serve as guest instructors for workshops, host a slideshow lecture at the museum, and perform schools visits to the Island’s classrooms. Education workshops are formulated mutually between the MMBA and the artist to work with the strengths of the artist’s practice and teaching experience.
Applications are accepted from artists globally for this established programme, and these are reviewed in conjunction with their portfolio. The selection committee takes into account both the diversity in nationality and art media when choosing the next artist in residence.
