Smithsonian Craft Show
Smithsonian Women's Committee
National Building Museum
Washington, DC
April 22-25, 2010
SHOW:
The annual Smithsonian Craft Show is a juried exhibition and sale of contemporary American crafts. Three jurors who are experts in the field and newly selected each year choose 120 artists from a large pool of applicants. Previous exhibitors must re-apply each year. No one is grandfathered into the show or given preference. Craft artists are selected on the basis of the originality, artistic conception, and quality of their work. The show is produced by the Smithsonian Women's Committee to benefit the Smithsonian Institution's education, outreach, and research programs. The Show does not charge sales commissions.
ELIGIBILITY:
All work submitted to the Smithsonian Craft Show must be created and made in the United States.
The Smithsonian Craft Show encourages artists to continue to grow and stretch the limits of their media and is committed to presenting the most thoughtful, original, and skilled American craft objects. While the Smithsonian Craft Show is primarily looking for one-ofa-kind objects and limited production work that has been conceived and perfected by the artist's own hands and created in the artist’s studio, we accept the use of CAD/CAM and other industrial techniques and subcontracting in conjunction with hand processes. The committee and jury rely on the honor of the applicants to submit work in which these processes are simply tools, and have not become the driving force in the creative process.
Only U.S. residents who make their work in the U.S. are eligible to compete.
Acceptable media categories: basketry, ceramics, decorative fiber, furniture, glass, jewelry, leather, metal, mixed media, paper, wearable art, and wood.
AWARDS:
In recognition of outstanding work, the Smithsonian Women's Committee presents cash awards for Excellence, Merit, and Honorable Mention, as well as Exhibitors' Choice Awards.
MULTIPLE ENTRIES:
If you enter in more than one medium, you must submit separate applications fees, and slides to each category for which you wish to be considered. If only one application is accepted, you may only exhibit work in that medium. An image of the same piece of work will not be accepted in more than one category.
APPLICATION DEADLINES AND FEES:
Electronic applications: By September 27, 2009.
The non-refundable fee for applying electronically is $50, payable online by credit card.
A late fee of $125 must be included for electronic applications received after September 27, 2009. Late electronic entries will not be accepted after October 11, 2009.
Mailed applications: mailed applications must be postmarked on or before September 13, 2009.
The non-refundable fee for applying by mail is $75 ($50 application fee + $25 to cover cost of scanning and entering data into electronic jury program) payable by check to the Smithsonian Craft Show.
A late fee of $125 must be included for mailed applications postmarked between September 14, and September 20, 2009. Mailed applications postmarked after September 20, 2009, will be returned unopened.

Port Moody Arts Centre: 2010 Wearable Art Exhibition

2010 Wearable Art Exhibition
In and Around the City of Port Moody and
Port Moody Arts Centre
Port Moody, British Columbia
CANADA
January 21, 2010 - March 21, 2010
Guidelines
(truncated)The 2010 Wearable Art Exhibition will be a two month long display coinciding with the 2010 Vancouver/Whistler Winter Olympic Games in British Columbia. With no performance component for this year, the 2010 jury will be basing decisions on craftsmanship, concept, and design. Finer details will be of greater importance in 2010. However, we still do require that entries are wearable.
As always, we are looking for more than a “pretty dress.” We are asking you to go deep into your imagination to create a wearable piece of art that challenges what most consider to be everyday fashion.
Important Notes
(truncated)- All entries must be wearable (but do not need to be practical in any way—in fact, the wilder the better!).
- All accepted entries will be included in a static two month exhibition in and around the City of Port Moody during the 2010 Vancouver/Whistler Olympic Games in British Columbia. There will not be a performance in 2010.
- The 2010 exhibition will also feature retrospective entries from previous wearable art awards. We invite artists to contribute past entries for display free of charge.
- Prize money will be allocated to each of the three categories and the People’s Choice Award.
- Only new entries will be eligible for category prize money. All submissions (new and retrospective) are eligible for the People’s Choice Award.
- Our team is available to answer questions and can be reached at info@wearableartawards.com More detailed information and related resources can be found on our web site at www.wearableartawards.com/artists.
Jurying
Entries will be judged based on the following criteria:
- All entries must be wearable (but not necessarily practical);
- Creativity and originality (not street wear);
- Design and the use of multiple techniques;
- Presentation and skill with media;
- Concept/Message; and
- Innovative materials or innovative use of traditional materials (thinking outside of the box).
