THEME – 23 Sandy Gallery and the College Book Art Association (CBAA) invite you to submit work to The Assignment, a juried book arts exhibition held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the CBAA in Portland, Oregon. To illuminate the conference’s focus on book arts teaching practice and pedagogy, this exhibition will feature work created by member artists generated directly from course assignments or from those assignments we generate for ourselves. This show is open to both teachers and students of the book arts. Work accepted into the show will be exhibited alongside a written description of the assignment. Non-members are welcome to submit work if they pay the membership fee on top of the entry fee. See the Assignment: Inspiration page for some exciting sample assignment ideas.
MEDIA - This exhibit is open to book arts related artworks created as either edition or one-of-a-kind. Artist books, sculptural books, book objects, altered books, zones or broadsides are encouraged. Any medium, any style, any size. Wall-hung work must be framed behind acrylic (not glass) and ready to hang
ENTRIES - A maximum of two artworks may be submitted per artist. Entries must be received online no later than OCTOBER 24, 2009. Artists accepted for the exhibition will be notified via email. The curators reserve the right to decline any accepted artwork upon delivery if the condition or quality are other than represented in the electronic entry.
JURORS - The Assignment will be juried by Marcy Chad wick and Clifton Meador.
FEES - A $25 non-refundable entry fee for up to two works must accompany each submission. You will also have the option to pay CBAA membership fees at the same time.
INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS - Artists residing outside of the United States are welcome to enter this exhibition. The exhibition entry fee of $25 must be paid in US funds. Return shipping of all artwork will be handled via the carrier of your choice but you must provide pre-paid, ready-to-ship shipping labels and customs documents
CASH PRIZES & AWARDS - One book will be awarded the “Purchase Prize” and will be purchased and donated to the John Wilson Special Collection Room at the Multnomah County Library in Portland. In addition, the CBAA will give two $200 cash awards and several honorary awards will be given by the jurors
SALES - All work entered in this exhibition must be for sale and are sold on consignment. The Gallery keeps 30% of the sale price. The artist receives 70% of the sale price. Sale proceeds will be paid to the artist within 30 days of the close of the show
