Small in scale but visually compelling, this exhibit features work that speaks to the intricacy of expression, the intimacy of design, thoughtful communication, and visual excitement. The artists in this exhibit create a big impact through small pieces. The exhibit showcases works created using fiber techniques in any media, not to exceed 15 inches (38 cm) in any direction, including mounting, framing, or display devices. Artists residing in the Western United States may apply:  Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming with special consideration given to artists from Oregon.

VISION
Deschutes Public Library Art Collection - Diverse, Inclusive and Inspirational

The renovations and new construction throughout the entire library district bring the opportunity for the district to build a new art collection.  Art in all six Deschutes Public Library branches will be diverse in both concept and material.  Works will be traditional and non-traditional and possess a lasting endurance. The DPL Art Committee seeks works in all media and genres: Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, Glass, Fiber, Functional, Digital, Photography, Installation, Mixed Media, New media/genres.  Suspended from ceilings, mounted on walls, embedded in floors, anchoring a public space, works will exist in both expected and unexpected places within the building and on library grounds.  

Situated in the center of Oregon, over 200,000 people call Deschutes County home.  Central Oregon, widely known for its stunning mountains, rivers, pine forests and recreational opportunities, will now be home to a new 100,000 square foot library in east Bend known as Stevens Ranch, a new branch library in Redmond and completely renovated and renewed libraries in the communities of La Pine, Sunriver and Sisters and in historic downtown Bend.  The project is funded by a voter approved bond measure.  1% of the brick and mortar costs are reserved for the purchase of art.

All mediums and genres are open for consideration.

Artists who respond to this call will be considered for inclusion in the Deschutes Public Artists Library Artist Roster.  The Art Committee will invite pre-qualified artists from the roster to submit proposals for specific artwork commissions in one or more library branches.  Up to five finalists will be invited to submit a formal proposal for each commission. Finalists will receive up to a $1,000 honorarium for a written proposal, online presentation and digital rendering of the proposed artwork. Finalists wishing to visit the area may, on a case-by-case basis, be offered an additional stipend to offset travel expenses.

BUDGET
The renovation and new construction of all the branches is scheduled to conclude fall of 2026.  Budgets for art per branch range from $30,000 to $900,000 for a total project budget for art of just under $1.5 million for the county wide library system.  A fundraising campaign will nearly match the amount funded by the 1% program.

Immediate Submissions Encouraged:  While the Deschutes Public Library seeks artwork for six library branches with multiple deadlines, we encourage artists to submit NOW, as the art selection committee is actively seeking artworks for all branches, regardless of construction completion timelines.

The Maude Kerns Art Center is accepting applications for our biennial call for the 2025 & 2026 Exhibits Season. Local, regional, and national artists (individuals and groups) working in 2- and 3- dimensional mediums, as well as installation art, are invited to submit their work for consideration. Solo, group, and/or themed shows will be curated based on the content, quality, and number of submissions. Established, mid-career, and emerging artists are encouraged to apply.

ENTRIES:
Each submission, individual or group, needs to include a minimum of 10 images and up to a maximum of 20 images total. 1 audio/video file may be submitted in place of an image. Audio/video files should not exceed 3 minutes or 100 mb in size. Floor plans of the gallery spaces are available upon request.

GROUP SUBMISSIONS:
Groups can be two or more artists. For groups a minimum of 10 images and a maximum of 20 images is allowed. You may include up to 1 audio and/or video file in place of an image. Audio/video files should not exceed 3 minutes or 100 mb in size. Each artist needs to provide a file that includes an individual artist resume, individual artist statement and completed application form. A statement describing the overall theme or concept of the exhibit should also be submitted. For ease of communication, one artist must be designated the "coordinator" of the exhibit.

SELECTION PROCESS:
Jurors will be accomplished artists and art professionals. Artists will be chosen based on quality and technical excellence. It is understood that the individual pieces of art submitted may not be available during the assigned exhibit period, however the theme and quality of the final work should match what is submitted to the jury. Art Center staff will work closely with the artist to select work for the final exhibit.

The Houston Center for Contemporary Craft's mission is to educate on the process, product, and history of craft, here in the city of Houston and across the country. In our exhibitions, educational programs, and artist residencies, we strive to create a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment that provides access to the resources artists need to realize their creative and community endeavors.

Program Info & Requirements
Applicants should consider the public facing nature of the residencies and the fact that a major goal of the program is to provide visitors with an opportunity to explore contemporary craft through engaging with working artists.

Applicants must be able to fulfill a program requirement of working in their studios for two days per week during HCCC public hours:  Tuesday – Saturday, 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM.  All resident artists are required to open their studios to public interaction on Saturdays and one other day of the week (TBD), as well as during exhibition openings and specific educational programs on the evenings and weekends.

Benefits of the residency include 24/7 access to studio space, cultural and professional development opportunities, a monthly stipend that includes a small housing/materials allowance, and the opportunity to give an artist talk.

Juried selection is based on quality of creative work, ability to interact with the public, career direction, and program diversity.

• Five-to-10 residencies awarded
• Residencies available in three-, six-, nine-, and 12-month time periods.
• Residency cycle begins in September and ends in August.
• Residency start dates and length determined by the program review panel.

BIPOC Support Grant Provided by HCCC & Crafting the Future

HCCC and Crafting the Future (CTF) craftingthefuture.org have partnered to introduce a new funding opportunity to support Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) craft artists. Crafting the Future works to diversify the fields of art, craft, and design by connecting BIPOC artists with opportunities that will help them thrive. By banding together and pooling the resources of like-minded artists and art appreciators, CTF is making the changes they want to see in communities around the country.

Residents who identify as BIPOC can receive unrestricted funding in addition to their monthly honorarium. The additional support ranges from $500 to $1,000 and can be awarded as a one-time gift or on a scheduled monthly basis to support their practice. Interdisciplinary Craft + Photography Artist Residency offered by Houston Center for Contemporary Craft and Houston Center for Photography

The Interdisciplinary Craft + Photography (ICP) Artist Residency is designed for artists creating work at the intersection of contemporary craft and photography. This three-month residency supports artists with an experimental, multidisciplinary edge, who are testing the boundaries within both fields. ICP residents will be hosted in a studio space at HCCC and will receive all the benefits of regular HCCC resident artists.  In addition, from Houston Center for Photography (HCP), they will receive printing credits and access to the digital lab. Artists will participate in a joint artist talk and will be included in HCCC's annual In Residence exhibition, as well as receive a feature in HCP's spot magazine.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate and address how their practice engages the fields of both craft and photography.

Ethereal is a quality that possesses almost perfect or extremely delicate features that pertain to a spiritual realm rather than of this earth. Artists are invited to submit work that is inspired by or holds this mystical essence.

ELIGIBILITY:  This juried exhibition is open to all artists over the age of 18, who reside in the United States. All work must be original and completed in the last two years. All work must be accurately represented in jpeg images.  Work not meeting these criteria will not be exhibited.

PRESENTATION:  Professional presentation of each piece is required. Video, 2D and 3D work are all accepted. 2D work must be framed and have a secure way to hang the piece if it requires hanging. For canvases, the sides and all staples must be covered.

We believe the hallmarks of an ideal resident artist include: proficiency in their selected area(s), comfort with community engagement, self-motivation, and a strong sense of creative direction. The residencies are open to all professional and emerging artists, age 18 and over, regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, age, marital status, or physical or mental disability. Open to Artists of any discipline.

Space for an end-of-residency exhibition and reception for the artist provided.

Online exhibition of work produced during residency (if desired).

Artists will have the opportunity to plan and create paid workshop opportunities during their residency.  Artists who are residents during the spring/summer can apply to be a paid teaching artist during our Art Camps. This is a required part of the residency.  The hourly rate is $25/hr. You can also choose to offer free classes/workshops.

Artists will be put in touch with local press, and other media outlets to discuss their residency.

Third Friday Artwalks organized by 6th Street provide an unparalleled opportunity for residents to engage with the public not only at the Studios but anywhere on the artwork in downtown, opening up limitless ideas for interactive art projects.

Artists are required to host open studios one (1) day a week:
Wed 1-5 PM, Thurs 2-5 PM, Fri 10-6 PM, or Sat 11-3 PM.

We encourage artists to involve the downtown community in their project(s). The front exhibition area, where the studio is located, is open to the public on Tuesdays & Thursdays from  10-2pm. This provides the artist a unique opportunity to interact and share with the public.

Seven Week Residencies 2024–2025

Founded in 2007, JTHAR is a nonprofit artist residency that fosters creativity through opportunities for exploring, experimenting, quiet reflection, engagement and cross-cultural exchange with the vibrant local artist community. We establish spaces where inspiration happens on a daily basis, so artists can do the work of innovating, changing the cultural landscape and generating a fresh look at the way we connect to each other and to the world. Each year we invite 6 artists from around the world to create work amidst the beauty of Joshua Tree National Park.

Artists selected for this program are at all stages of their careers and work in all media, including drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, film, video, new media, installation, fiction and nonfiction writing, interdisciplinary, social practice and architecture.

Seven Week Artist Residencies
May 1, 2024 – June 19, 2024
August 21, 2024 – October 9, 2024
January 15, 2025 – March 5, 2025

All US and International artists are eligible for the JTHAR program.

Selection Process: Artists are selected to attend the residency by the JTHAR Board Members. The committee reviews all applications submitted to the program. Selection is based on the merit of the artist's portfolio and the residency proposal.

Scholarship Information: Residency recipients will receive a $1000.00 scholarship/stipend to deter costs of participating in the program. Funds can be used towards art supplies, transportation, meals, etc.

Gothard Family Artist Scholarship: The Gothard Family Artist Scholarship awards a $1200 stipend to a JTHAR residency recipient of African American heritage. The selection process for the Gothard Family Artist Scholarship is based on the artist successfully meeting all JTHAR eligibility criteria. This award is for visual artists only. Barbara Gothard is an African American artist who lives, works and is influenced by the Palm Springs/Mojave Desert region.

The Alma Ruiz Artist Fellowship awards a Joshua Tree Highlands Artist Residency position to a Latin American and U.S. Latino/a artists of exceptional ability in the visual arts from the US or around the world. Each year, a deserving recipient will be chosen by Alma Ruiz, JTHAR advisor and former senior curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.  The Fellowship consists of a six or seven week residency, studio space, living accommodations, monetary stipend, and a gallery exhibition.  The residency is designed to foster creativity while interacting with other JTHAR artists in residence and the artistic community of Joshua Tree, California.  This is a non-application fellowship.

Studios and Accommodations: The residency provides studio space and living accommodations.  Each artist will be assigned their own house in which to live and work for the length of the residency.  Artists may choose to work in the JTHAR dedicated studio, a large studio space, divided by movable walls, depending on the artist's needs. Housing Accommodations are located in the Highlands near the West Entrance of the Joshua Tree National Park.  

Residency Terms and Expectations:  Artists must provide transportation to and from the program.  A vehicle is needed during the residency stay.  Artists chosen must be able to attend for the six week program. No exceptions.  Artists are welcome to have visitors during the residency.  Visitors are limited to a two night stay.  We cannot accommodate family members, partners or pets.  Artists must notify hosts of planned visitors.  

Artists chosen for the residency will be required to donate one completed work to the JTHAR program.

This exhibit is meant to express the excitement of movement regardless of the medium. Entries may be 2-D or 3-D, wall hung, suspended in space, supported by a pedestal, or free-standing on a floor.

If this sounds new to you, Kinetic Art is any medium that contains movement perceivable by the viewer or that depends on motion for it's effect. So show us your mobiles, or any art that has moving elements or gives the feeling of motion. This exhibit is for art that's GOT THE MOVES!

The ceiling in the Sara Braaten Gallery is over 17 feet high and the entrance lobby about 21 feet high. Therefore, it is possible to suspend hanging pieces that are fairly lightweight. There is a 35lb weight limit for art suspended from the ceiling.

Visions Museum of Textile Art (VMOTA) is proud to announce the call for entries for Quilt Visions 2024, the museum's 25th international juried exhibition.  Exhibition jurors will select work exemplifying art quilting at the highest level of quality, innovation, surface design techniques, excellence in composition, and craftsmanship. 

 

Selected works will be featured in a full-color exhibition catalog. Cash prizes will be awarded.

Quilt Visions 2024 will be on display at VMOTA in San Diego, from October 12 to December 28, 2024. Selected artists will receive further information regarding participation during Quilt Visions 2024 Festival Days. Festival Days will include workshops, lectures, artist meet and greets, receptions and other gatherings. Participation by selected artists is highly encouraged but not required.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS AND ELIGIBILITY

Entry is open to the general public. Museum membership is not required.

Artists may submit up to three (3) entries. Only one (1) entry by each artist may be selected.

The non-refundable fee for entering up to three (3) works is $40 for all VMOTA members and $50 for non-members. To become a member click here vmota.org/join/.
 

Artwork submitted for consideration must have been completed on or after January 1, 2022 and not having been exhibited at a venue within a 100 mile radius of San Diego.

Artwork must be original and produced by the individual or a collaboration of a maximum of two (2) artists. Works created in a workshop or class are not eligible for submission.

Artworks for sale are strongly encouraged; however, NFS (Not for Sale) works may be entered.

ARTWORK SPECIFICATIONS

• An entry is considered to be a quilt if it is composed of at least two layers that are stitched or fastened together.
• Each entry may be no larger than 72" by 72". There is no minimum size requirement.
• Quilts must have a 3 inch sleeve securely attached to the back of the quilt. Quilts 50" or wider must have a center opening to allow for the hanging system VMOTA uses. A second sleeve at the bottom of the work is recommended.
• Artwork must be clearly labeled with the artist's name and the title of the artwork.

THE HAND & LOCK PRIZE FOR EMBROIDERY 2024 IS NOW OPEN

The annual Hand & Lock Prize for Embroidery is a celebration of craftsmanship and the fine art of embroidery. This global competition provides aspiring embroidery students and designers an opportunity to showcase their talents and gain vital exposure and experience. The aim of this prize is to promote the use of hand embroidered surface embellishment within the fashion, costume & textile industries. We provide artists, students, practitioners and enthusiasts with a platform to connect with other industry bodies; in turn gaining exposure, improving embroidery techniques and keeping the age-old tradition moving forward in the modern world.

The Hand & Lock Prize for Embroidery accepts all types of embroidery. Your piece may include more than one type of embroidery.

Our contest is open to embroiderers, students and enthusiasts anywhere in the world.

TYPE OF ENTRY

Student
To qualify for the Student Category you must be in full or part time higher education at the time of registration. Registration as a student means you will benefit from subsidised entry fee and can submit work you are creating as part of your course.

Open
If you aren't in full or part time higher education, you will qualify for the Open Category. Registering in the Open Category is for anyone of any age. You can be a skilled practitioner, a passionate enthusiast or even a recent graduate.

CATEGORIES

FASHION
Fashion entrants should design a fashion garment that takes inspiration from the Prize brief. Your submission should showcase your design skill as well as your ability to embroider. Judges will look at your concept, execution, construction, embroidery skill and overall presentation.

TEXTILE ART
Entrants should examine the brief and produce an object that showcases their embroidery skills. The object could be a piece of jewellery, an artistic sculpture, an embroidered tapestry, a piece for home interior design etc. Judges will look at originality, embroidery technique, execution, construction and overall presentation.

The Brief (truncated version)

A palimpsest is an ancient document where the original inscriptions have been erased to make room for new texts. It has become a word we use to describe our capacity to see the age and history of an object or place. This idea of the old making way for the new, while leaving faint traces is at the heart of archaeology, art, evolution and innovation.

Consider yourself, the objects in your home and wider society and look for the layers that reveal the stages and transformations that led them each to where they are today. Look at your environment, the landscape, the forest, the city through which you make your daily commute. See the ancient ruins that lie sandwiched between glistening glass skyscrapers and construct your own histories.

Consider the emotion your piece can convey: calm tranquillity, vibrant exaggeration, or the blended middle ground. Find your own expression of optimism. Imbue your object with layers that aspire to hope, joy and celebration.

Embrace up-cycling as a metaphor for historical revisionism. Investigate the act of embroidery as a healing process. Recognise and highlight the transformation in you, and the objects you embroider.

Your final work should reflect a complex and personal multi-layered engagement with your inspirations. Dig deep and explore your thoughts and feelings: your submission should provoke, communicate and articulate a strong sense of emotion.

Submission Guidelines for the First Round of Judging

For the first round entrants should only submit images. These images should convey a combination of your overall vision, your design journey, your research and include fine details. If your submission is incomplete, images of your work in progress and a rendering of your overall scheme can be submitted.

Our judges will use these images to assess your embroidery vision and how you have chosen to interpret the brief. Judges will look for evidence of your inventive and original interpretation, as well as your technical ability and overall design.

For the first round you will be asked to upload six images. These images should meet the following criteria:

– Three research images (Consisting of concept or mood board and embroidery samples).

– Three images of your embroidered Textile art or fashion piece (If final design is not complete, then please provide images/designs of how the final piece is expected to look).

– Your images should demonstrate that you have followed the specially written brief.

– Your images should not be doctored, obscuring your overall design vision or your embroidery skill.

– Your submission should be accompanied by up to 200 words describing your overall concept along with techniques and materials used.

The Southeast Fiber Arts Alliance (SEFAA) and the Professional Crafts - Fibers Program at Haywood Community College have joined forces to organize, promote, and host a juried student exhibition of creative works in fiber art. The exhibition exclusively features the work of post-secondary students to honor and encourage the next generation of fiber artists and it showcases a wide range of content, material, and techniques with the common threads of originality and passion.

ELIGIBILITY: Any undergraduate/graduate student enrolled in a fiber/textile program or independently pursuing a study of fibers/textiles in the Southeast (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, or Virginia) at the time of application is eligible to apply.

This exhibition is the fifth in a series, with previous Spotlight exhibitions held in Greenville NC, Athens GA, Murray KY, and Greenville SC.

ENTRY FEE FOR 1-3 WORKS:
$20 - Members of the Southeast Fiber Arts Alliance (SEFAA)
$35 - Non-members (includes 1-yr student membership in SEFAA)

WORK REQUIREMENTS:  

• Each student may submit up to three works.
• Submitted work must be original in design and must have been completed after January 1, 2022.
• Work must utilize fiber techniques (interlaced, felted, stitched, dyed, coiled, knotted, printed, spun, woven, etc.) and can be of any material.
• Only individual work will be considered; no group projects will be accepted.
• Students who propose an installation work must be prepared to personally install the work at Haywood Community College and remove it after the exhibition closes.
• Work is limited to a weight of 50 pounds including any mounting hardware and/or armature.
• Installed work must be no wider than 4 feet and no taller/longer than 7 feet.
• Screws are allowed for hanging, but bolts are not.

INSTALLATION AND EXHIBITION

• Work must be received ready to display and must include all mounting/display hardware.
• Include clear written installation instructions (supplemented by photos, if appropriate) with each work.
• Two-dimensional work will hang against walls. Three-dimensional work will be free-standing or placed on pedestals or mannequins.
• Haywood Community College will insure all work while it is at the College.

SALES

• Sales are permitted for works where a sales price has been declared during the application process.
• Haywood Community College will direct all sales inquiries to the student artist who will be responsible for all sales transactions and for notifying Haywood Community College that their work has been sold.
• No commission will be charged, but you are encouraged to donate a portion of your revenue to Haywood Community College, SEFAA, or another nonprofit of your choice.
• Sold work must remain on exhibit throughout the duration of the exhibition.

The Virginia Jackson Design Competition (originally called the International Textile Market Association Design Award) was established in 1995 to recognize the most talented students in the field of textile design and create a vehicle to bring new talent into the industry.

When the association launched the student design competition, Virginia Jackson was very instrumental in establishing the core fundamentals, which continue to play a major role in the program.

Submitted designs must be created for residential upholstery applications in Dobby, Jacquard and Print categories.

ENTRY – STUDENT INFORMATION
All entries must be submitted by and be the work of students currently registered for courses in the textile design schools or departments of approved accredited universities
or colleges.

Each entry should have the following information included and meet the following criteria: (truncated version)

• The design - entry can be artwork (for prints only), printed fabric, or woven fabric (for jacquard and dobby entries).
• The design applied to a sketch of a piece of furniture. This will illustrate the application of the design in practical usage and an understanding of the design placement upon the furniture. Be sure the design motif is applied to the furniture in its proper scale relationship of fabric to frame.
• An image of the design in repeat if it is not included elsewhere.
• Overall size of entries should be 27" x 27" excluding mat, one "major pattern" per board; dobby entries to be no smaller than a 13 1⁄2" x 13 1⁄2".
•  A statement of inspiration for the design should be included on the board.
• A required contribution to the ITA Educational Foundation is necessary, $25 per entry.

The museum offers a variety of hands-on learning opportunities and career training for students, including jobs, work study, course credit and more.

GW students can apply for part-time paid positions on GW's Student Employment website. We seek applicants with a professional attitude, flexibility, sense of commitment and the ability to work under deadlines. Students work closely with the museum's professional staff on daily tasks and long-term projects, and participate in monthly staff meetings and other museum-wide activities.

We also welcome inquiries year-round from students at GW and other universities who are interested in learning experiences at the museum. We will work with you to identify meaningful opportunities designed around your individual professional goals and course credit requirements.

The Arthur D. Jenkins Library is a non-circulating library that offers resources for scholars and the public on textile history and global dress. Students can participate in collection assessment, resource description and processing, marketing, and the library's digital repository initiative.

Collections Management

The Collections Management Department ensures the stewardship, safety and care of the museum collections. Students will gain experience in basic collections management practices and protocols, including processing incoming objects, object inventory, environmental monitoring and integrated pest management, condition reporting, database management and digital imaging.

Conservation

The Conservation Department provides care for the 21,000 artworks in The Textile Museum Collection. Students must be enrolled in, or a recent graduate of a recognized conservation program, with basic experience in textile storage, treatment, condition reporting and exhibition preparation. Under special circumstances, experienced collections management professionals may apply. Students will receive training in techniques of storing, mounting and treating textiles.

We want to see what you made! Enter your project into the first WMQFA Rummage Sale Treasures exhibition. An exhibition of everyone's rummage sale treasures will be on view in the museum's micro-gallery, May 1–June 9, 2024.

One of the supplies used must have been purchased at the 2023 rummage sale and should be identifiable. One entry per person.

Your entry should be dropped off at the museum between April 10–21, 2024. Entries may be mailed, with return postage.

Viewer's Choice Ribbon, with a one-year WMQFA Family Membership, and two Merit Ribbons, each with one-year Individual Memberships, will be awarded.

Voting will take place May 1–June 9. The winners will be announced during WMQFA's 2024 Rummage Sale, June 13–15.
