Root Division: OPEN CALL FOR ARTISTS

Deadline: March 19, 2012 (EMAIL) or (RECEIVE)

OPEN CALL FOR ARTISTS:
Through That Which Is Seen
Root Division

San Francisco, CA
June 6-23, 2012

Curated by: Alexis Arnold and Lauren Hartman

Root Division invites artists investigating the diorama through all genres, to submit work for an exhibition entitled Through That Which is Seen.

Through That Which is Seen will represent a range of interpretations of the diorama on all scales. We aim to exhibit pieces borrowing from museums’ use of the diorama as a means to inform and educate to works that turn the more conventional notion of diorama on its head. From natural history displays to shoebox book reports, the word diorama often conjures memories from childhood. However, dioramas can be found dotted throughout our daily lives. Think about storefront displays, televisions, and medicine cabinets, to name a few. Does a shower become a performative diorama when in use? Or a car? The co-curators are open to reviewing any and all iterations of possible interpretations of dioramas.

Fee: $10 check/money order or via PayPal

Complete details available on website: http://rootdivision.org/Call_Through_That_Which_Is_Seen.html

Please call 415.863.7668 or email events@rootdivision.org with any questions.

Paul Robeson, Galleries: Call for Exhibition Proposals

Deadline: March 26, 2012 (POSTMARK)

Call for Exhibition Proposals
Paul Robeson, Galleries
Rutgers – The State University of New Jersey

Newark, New Jersey
January – March, 2013

There is no place like home

The home is not only the place where the heart is, but also a site for politics and the imagination. Everyday we hear incessant news about foreclosures, vacancies, homelessness, tumbling property values, and the subsequent disruptions in people’s lives, and communities. At the same time the media generates programs celebrating real estate shenanigans, and the most extreme of home renovations. This exhibition will include the work of contemporary artists who use the idea of ‘home’ as a source of inspiration. It may be that they look at the physical and psychological notions of home (or neighborhoods) or specific rooms within the home. Or ideas about US utopian suburbia or homes in other countries, dolls houses or haunted houses, and the where/what of the many places that various people call home.

Exhibition will be on display January – March, 2013

A proposal should consist of:

1. A resume with your name and contact details
2. An artist statement
3. An image list and
4. A CD with images in JPEG format, or photographs of your work.

Proposals must be postmarked no later than March 26, 2012.

Artist in Residence
Grand Canyon National Park

Grand Canyon, AZ
South Rim: 2012 - 2013 Season
North Rim: 2013 Season

The parks have always welcomed artistic interpretations in support of land advocacy. Thomas Moran’s evocative and astounding paintings directly influenced the establishment of our first National Park (Yellowstone, 1872). This tradition continues today with more than 50 Artist-in-Residence programs throughout the National Park Service system.

The Artist-in-Residence Program offers professional artists the opportunity to spend three weeks on either the North or South Rim of Grand Canyon in housing provided by the National Park Service. The North Rim AiR program is seasonal, with six residencies during the spring, summer, and fall. The South Rim AiR program is year-round, providing twelve artist opportunities.

Grand Canyon National Park’s Artist-in-Residence Program seeks artists whose work is engaged in issues that are relevant to the Park Interpretative Themes, while challenging the visitor to become an active participant in preservation and environmental and cultural advocacy. We are pleased to host artists who communicate complex and contemporary issues through their chosen medium. Artists in all genres and in all disciplines, contemporary, traditional, or folk who have a genuine interest in contributing to our on-going national discussion on these issues will be of special interest to our program.

Artist opportunities: Contemporary, folk and traditional forms, including but not limited to:

Visual arts: painters, sculptors, printmakers, new media artists, muralists, designers, ceramicists, artisans, multi-discipline artists, fiber artists, mixed media artists, jewelers

Media: photographers, film makers, videographers

Writers: fiction and non-nonfiction writers, poets, playwrights

Performing arts: composers, musicians, dancers, performance artists, storytellers, dramatic artists

AiR artist proposals should be site-specific to Grand Canyon National Park, support the park’s Interpretative Themes, and will focus on such issues as ecology, the environment, park advocacy, conservation and other themes relevant to the parks.

Grand Canyon Artist-in-Residence program is using the Western Arts Federation (WESTAF) CaFE electronic application process this year.

In order for artists to access our application, you'll have to register as a WESTAF CaFE user.

Eastern State Penitentiary: Art Proposals

Deadline: June 13, 2012, 4:00 pm (RECEIVE) or (Hand Delivery)

Art Proposals
Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site

Philadelphia, PA
2013 Season

Eligibility:
• Collaborative proposals are permitted; individuals may submit only one proposal per year (whether alone or as part of a collaboration).
• Artists who have previously exhibited at the site must wait five years before submitting a proposal for a new installation.
• Applicants may not submit previously-rejected proposals.
• Artists must be at least 18 years old. Currently enrolled undergraduate students are ineligible to apply.
• All proposals must be for a site-specific installation.
• These guidelines are for artists who wish to install visual, video or other installation work to remain on view during all public hours at the historic site. The site does host performing arts, films, and speakers’ series. Please contact Sean Kelley at sk@easternstate.org for proposals in the performing or live arts.

Choosing a Location in the Penitentiary Complex:

Artists may apply for any public area in the penitentiary complex for the 2013 season, except Cellblock 2 and the main audio tour route. Some installations, such as Linda Brenner’s Ghost Cats have been sited throughout the penitentiary complex. ESP staff is available to consult on proposed locations.

Funding and Approval:

Funding: The historic site will fund a maximum $7,500.00 per project. This funding indicates approval to exhibit. All projects that are approved will be installed for one full tour season (typically March 15 through November 30), unless the proposal states otherwise. Artists may apply for future installation cycles, and should assume that the same guidelines, deadlines, and funding levels will apply.

Proposal Development: The historic site does not accept proposals for project development. The review committee may offer, at its discretion, development funds to Sapplicants whose proposals look promising, but whose ideas require additional resources to get a better idea of the final direction the work will take.

Extending an Installation: Artists whose work is currently installed may request that the Review Committee extend their installation by one tour season. They are merely required to submit this request in writing by the same deadline that applies to new applications. Many artists have kept work on view for multiple tour seasons through this process.

Mendocino Art Center: 2012/13 Artist Residency

Deadline: March 30, 2012 (RECEIVE)

2012/13 Artist Residency
Mendocino Art Center

Mendocino, CA
September 10, 2012 through May 18, 2013

The Mendocino Art Center offers an Artist in Residence program each year with residencies in ceramics, painting, jewelry/metalsmithing, sculpture and fiber arts. The program offers the working artist and craftsperson, emerging or established, a welcome retreat from the usual routine of everyday life and a chance to develop a body of work, while striving for personal and artistic growth.

The AIR program provides a community-based environment that facilitates both educational and individual artistic growth at the Mendocino Art Center (MAC).

The AIR program, now in its 51st year, was developed to bring emerging and established studio artists to this unique Northern California region to provide both time and space to develop their work. The 2012/13 residency year is September 10, 2012 through May 18, 2013.

We encourage our artists to pursue endeavors beyond the studio by seeking out group and solo exhibitions here on the coast and abroad.

Qualifications:
The program welcomes self-motivated, focused individuals working in traditional and nontraditional studio arts. Applicants should hold a BA, BFA, MFA, or life equivalency representing an established foundation of knowledge and body of work in their respective discipline. The primary basis for selection is the strength and quality of the applicants' work.

Residents must also have a clear objective for the time of their residency and be willing to live and work as part of a close-knit community. A successful residency depends in part on expectations consistent with what MAC has to offer.

Studios
The Art Center has three studios dedicated to Fine Arts, an etching press, a jewelry and metalsmithing studio, two studios dedicated to textiles (including a weaving room), two for ceramics, electric, gas, atmospheric and wood fired kilns and a small foundry. Studio space is usually shared with other artists. Residents will be responsible for materials and fuel consumption based on departmental pricings. A facilities fee is paid monthly that is regulated by specific studios and the equipment associated with them.

Housing
Residents will live on MAC grounds for the nine-month residency in a furnished apartment provided by MAC. We currently do not allow pets on the grounds.

Residents are allowed to re-apply for a second residency and, if selected, will honor a four-year grace period before applying thereafter.

$25 application fee

Applications for Artist in Residence are received and reviewed by the department directors/coordinators, and then by the Residency Committee.
The committee also determines which applicants are accepted for the AIR program.

Main Street Gallery: Call for Artists & Curators

Deadline: February 27, 2012 (RECEIVE)

Call for Artists & Curators
Main Street Gallery

Ketchikan, AK
2012-2013 Season

Artists are invited to submit proposals for solo or group exhibitions of their work for the 2012-2013 Season (Sept. 2012 - Aug. 2013) of the Ketchikan Area Arts & Humanities Council’s Main Street Gallery.

Curators are invited to submit proposals to curate a group exhibit based on unique themes or genres.

In evaluating proposals, the Gallery Review Panel shows preference for proposals by emerging and established local artists, group displays by students or community artists, and curators who propose exhibits that engage and challenge artists and viewers. Preference will be given to artists who have not shown in the gallery in the past two years. Artists and curators are encouraged to give a public demonstration, lecture or slideshow at the Main Street Gallery while their exhibit is on display.

Proposals are recommended by the Review Panel to the Gallery Committee and approved by the KAAHC Board of Directors. The Gallery season is September through August, excluding December, February, and August. If you have a particular exhibit month in mind, please indicate this in your cover letter and the Gallery Committee will try to accomodate you.

Exhibits open on the first Friday of each month and close on the last Friday of their month; KAAHC receives 25% of all sales.

Artists and curators selected to exhibit at the Main Street Gallery are required to be KAAHC members. Please be aware that the gallery is a multi-use space and is used for various community gatherings- your work may be moved to accommodate functions.

Call for Contributions: Fiber-Based Work on The Subject of Motherhood

Deadline: March 31, 2012 (EMAIL)

Call for Contributions
Fiber-Based Work on The Subject of Motherhood
Artist: Kate Kretz

2012 Textile Society Conference
Washington, D.C.

Seeking examples of work in fiber-based media on the topic of motherhood for a paper to be delivered at the 2012 Textile Society Conference in Washington, D.C. Artist Kate Kretz will be delivering a lecture entitled The Final Art Taboo: Identity Politics of Motherhood.

Female artists have gained some ground in the art world over the past few decades, but there are still unspoken rules remaining: artists who happen to be mothers tend to keep it quiet lest they be written off, and heaven forbid they make art on the subject. While art historians have always studied and noted the influence of travel, friends, and milieux on the work of male artists, the most profound and life-altering experience of all has been ignored in these discussions of creative inspiration, because it is an exclusively female phenomenon. This paper will feature work done by cutting edge contemporary textile artists who have artistically “come out” as mothers, addressing the topic with humor, depth, and sometimes, shocking candor. Fiber, a medium that references protection, nurturing, and other motherly attributes, serves as the perfect vehicle for art evoking the complex nature ofcontemporary motherhood.

To have your work considered for inclusion, please email website links or up to 3 jpeg images to kkretz4art@aol.com by March 31st.
