Deadline: October 30, 2009
Extended to: November 16, 2009 at 5.30pm (RECEIVE)
[read the posting announcing the change: closing-date-extended]

Momiji Doll Couture Contest

Here’s your chance to put your fashion and textile flair to the test as we challenge you to create a fabric Momiji doll.

Momiji are message dolls, each doll has a space in its base for a secret message. Our Couture Contest is a playful new direction; we’re looking for one-off, fabric dolls. You can create your doll using a combination of any textile methods you like; weaving, printing, knitting, embroidery....the list goes on.

The fabric dolls will be significantly larger than regular Momiji; you’ll find more details in our ‘How to Enter’ section.

Entries will be marked on overall wow-factor as well as skill and craftsmanship.

Our aim is to create a catwalk of exquisite Momiji dolls which show off the skill and flair of textile artists around the world. A shortlist of ten finalists will be chosen by our panel of experts. These ten dolls will be exhibited at Royal /T in Los Angeles. The judges will vote to select an overall winner. The winning entry will be featured in Selvedge magazine and we’ll be working with our press team to tell the world about you and your textile talent.

Redefine Dining! Design Competition

Deadline: January 6, 2010 at 11:00 p.m. CST (RECEIVE)

Redefine Dining!

Design Competition
World Kitchen LLC
Rosemont, IL

You are invited to redefine dining!

PURPOSE: The 2010 theme of our design competition—Redefining Dining!—has been chosen to celebrate the culturally diverse and changing role of the dining experience. Dining is expressive of lifestyle, economics, ethnicity and heritage. It is imbued with meaning and ritual, as well as function. At its most basic, it nourishes the body; at its best it nourishes the spirit. But how we eat, when we eat, what we eat, even where we eat have all changed drastically in the past 100 years. World Kitchen believes that change is the fuel that design innovation thrives on. It inspires us by asking the question, “How can we make this experience better?”

Defined broadly, the entire “Tablescape” is the palette. Designers are invited to address single items or full systems and any artifact that is mass produced except the food itself. The expectation is that this breadth of canvas will inspire designers to apply their research and problem-solving skills, their creativity and empathy and their aesthetic sense, to identifying needs and fresh approaches relevant to today’s lifestyle trends. The hope is that designers will not simply submit decorative bowls, but will consider the experience of consuming food in today’s realities.

World Kitchen seeks to celebrate and explore what is the modern dining experience by sponsoring a design competition (the “Competition”). The goal of the Competition is to spur innovative thinking and problem solving that will demonstrate the role of design as a core value for the Housewares industry.

ELIGIBILITY & SCOPE

You are eligible to enter if:
 You are over 18 years of age;
 You are eligible to enter based on U.S. law;
 You are not a resident and or company of countries under U.S. embargo, including Cuba, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Sudan, and Syria.
 You are entering your original work.

Designs are eligible to enter if they are:
 Your original work;
 Single artifacts, entire product lines or whole systems;
 Have not previously won an honor or award in any competition; and
 Focused on enhancing the modern dining experience per the competition’s goals.

Design concepts should reflect and respond to today’s many lifestyles and the changing nature of the dining experience across cultures and social groups, whether on the go, at family evenings, with parties of friends or at elegant functions. However, concepts should reflect the functional and contextual opportunities and constraints of the dining scenario(s) for which they are intended.

You decide whether you want to enter single artifacts, product lines or whole systems, but the focus has to be on dining.

JUDGING CRITERIA: All Entries will be judged according to the following equally-weighted Judging Criteria:

(a) Opportunity identification and research
(b) Innovation
(c) User experience
(d) Appropriate aesthetics
(e) Manufacturability

Awards:
 Three Top Awards of $5,000 each
 An expense-paid trip for your or one team representative to attend an award ceremony at the International Home + Housewares Show® in Chicago, Illinois, between March 14 and March 16, 2010.

The Lab

Deadline: Ongoing

The Lab

San Francisco, CA
Curatorial, Exhibition and Residency Opportunies

The Lab is an interdisciplinary arts organization which supports the development and presentation of new visual, performing, media, sonic, and literary art. We assist artists in the creation of new work and showcase work of the highest quality by emerging and underrepresented experimental artists. Of particular interest is work which crosses boundaries, encourages evolving artistic and social dialogue between artists and audiences, and develops the culture and community of the San Francisco Bay Area.

Proposals: The Lab accepts proposals on an on-going basis. In particular, The Lab seeks proposals of new work that fully utilizes our space or engages with the space in a nontraditional manner. The Lab accepts submissions from emerging and experimental curators for group visual art exhibitions or performance series. A curator's own artwork should not be included in the project proposal. If accepted, The Lab encourages curators to post an open call for entries on The Lab's website, although this is not required. The LAB also reviews proposals from visual artists for the main gallery space or solo shows in the front gallery. The Lab accepts proposals from performers for 2-4 week residencies in our main gallery space. We strongly prefer to present new work that has not been shown elsewhere in the San Francisco Bay Area; exceptions will be considered on a case by case basis.

Curators, solo artists, and collaborators are encouraged to apply to one of our three spaces:

Main Gallery: Available for curated group shows, solo or two-person exhibitions or residencies for visual artists and/or performers. The gallery is 2,100 square feet. Chairs, risers, stages, and moveable walls are available. The maximum seated capacity is 100.

Front Gallery: Primarily for solo visual artists. 123 sq feet. Four walls approx 8' wide x 10' tall.

Ticket Booth: For single-channel new media works. Small (4x4) ticket-booth closet adjoining entry hall to the LAB. Currently we only have the ability to exhibit DVD works in this space.

Residencies: Solo artists/performers or collaborators may apply for residencies in the Main Gallery space. The LAB offers 2 performance residencies per year. The LAB offers artists an extended workspace for 2-4 weeks to create new work; the length of time depends on the scope of your project. Residents are encouraged to engage the community with public events such workshops or panel discussions. If you are applying for a LAB residency, please address these additional issues of time, community, and budget (if applicable) along with the regular application (instructions stated below).

Our programming committee meets monthly to review proposals. Accepted proposals are generally presented 6-18 months after the date of acceptance. For more information on past LAB programming, please see our list of past events.

How to Apply (truncated)

*What are the specifics of your proposal?

ART342
Artist in Residence Program

Fort Collins, Colorado
Spring 2010: January 11 – April 23
Summer 2010: May 3 – August 13

ART342 is an artist-in-residency program in Fort Collins, Colorado. We offer free studio and living spaces to resident artists. We can accommodate visual artists, ceramicists, scholarly and creative writers, and composers. Applications are reviewed by an independent jury. Up to 5 artists are selected for each 15-week session. Residents are asked to donate work and/or services to the Fort Collins community.

ELIGIBILITY: The Residency Program is open to visual artists, creative writers, scholars in arts or aesthetics, composers, interdisciplinary artists, and collaborative teams. Applicants must show professional standing in their field. Both mature and emerging artists of promise are welcome to apply.

General Policies and the Site

At this time our studios are primarily designed for visual artists, ceramicists, and composers. We are not set up for welders, metal smiths, woodworkers, choreographers, and other media. We will consider creative and scholarly writers, although we may ask them to share a studio.

We will ask that residents give back to ART342 and/or the Fort Collins community. This could involve an informal work shop, a class, a donation of a piece, etc.

We may propose one 'open house' per session. Each artist can then decline to open their studio or be present.

At this time, each session lasts 15 weeks. We will consider accepting two applicants who can share a session without overlap.

We will award each resident a weekly stipend of $100. This may be used for supplies, or any other expenses as the resident prefers. At this time, we do not offer additional stipends for the residents who live on site.

We will supply each studio with a chair, work table, work sink and some shelving. Just let us know what additional furniture and equipment you require and we will do what we can. Studio Miles is equipped with a kiln for ceramicists. Studio Mingus will have an extensive set of electronic music composition gear.

SUMMARY STATEMENT: Through November 12, we are accepting submissions from 2d and 3d artists using and/or interpreting textile, fabric and fiber media. There are no size limitations but please use your judgment and knowledge of each space’s configuration. - Hand-making original materials by weaving or bonding, re-using found objects, etc.
- Embellishing everyday objects with embrodiery, deconstructing or re-interpreting them, etc.
- Employing any of these processes and others as stand-alone art forms.
- Using video, audio or photography to interpret or illustrate these media.

The gallery embraces emerging artists, avant-garde forms, strong personal and political perspectives, and fresh ideas.

The Midwives Collective & Gallery is a 21st-century women’s collective formed for the purpose of fostering community art making, culture and the creation of art history by maintaining a public arena for the display and practice of innovative, emerging art.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO: You may submit as many pieces as you wish at $5 per entry. Jurying will take place from digital images on CD, which can be submitted as either jpgs or tifs.

Wooden Dolls
Wood is one of the earliest known materials used to make dolls because it was easy to carve, sturdy and unbreakable. Most were symbolic and ceremonial figures, often of a religious nature. According to the doll category guidelines set by United Federation of Doll Clubs (UFDC), the type of doll is determined by the content of the doll's head. Thus, a wood doll
always has a wooden head regardless of the types of materials used in the body construction. With that in mind, we challenge you to create wood dolls and send us your submissions.

You are welcome to construct a bag from scratch, or to purchase one that you embellish and alter with paints, beads, rubber stamps, ribbons, buttons, transparencies, and more. No medium or material is ruled out so use your imagination to make bags of leather, wool, fabric, paper, plastic, wood, glass, or any other materials that you love.

Deadline for artwork to be received: Semi-annually every November 15th, and May 15th.

GENERAL ARTWORK SUBMISSION GUIDELINES (truncated)
All artwork must arrive at our offices on or before the published deadlines. We prefer submissions of original art. If original art is not available, our next preference is hi-res digital images (300 dpi at 8½" x 10"). If hi-res digital images are not available, we will very rarely consider professional-quality transparencies or color slides. Color-copy submissions
are not accepted.

Depending on the publication, concise yet thorough instructions must accompany each art sample. Attach individual sample instructions to each piece of artwork and include credits for art stamp images used, as well as any other products of note. If you are able, please keep an electronic version of your instructions, as you may be requested to send those in if your work is selected for publication.

Labyrint 09 - Writings and Observations

Deadline: October 26, 2009 (RECEIVE) & (EMAIL)

Labyrint 09 - Writings and Observations

International Artist’s Bbook Exhibition
Botkyrka konsthall
Sweden
November 7, 2009 to March 13, 2010

The second edition of Botkyrka konsthall’s international artist’s book exhibition Labyrint will open on November 7th in Sweden. The title of the exhibition, Writings and Observations, refers to the artistic practice of writing as a way of seeing, a way of altering the world.

This year’s edition will focus not only on artist’s books, but also text art, and the aspects of writing in contemporary art. A research into writing as a way of thinking will be carried out – how are ideas brought forth through text, and how can the way we read an older work or history per se be changed through text? Labyrint will also focus on works with performative aspects such as film manuscripts of artists, and art in relation to text, music and sound.

Labyrint 09 - Writings and Observations is open to artists worldwide with a mutual interest; the concept of books and text art, and the practice of writing.

A catalogue will be produced in 2010.

Curators: Joanna Sandell and Pia Sandström

Please send your work to:
Botkyrka konsthall

A curatorial selection will take place and a final notification that you have been selected for the exhibition will reach you no later than November 2nd 2009.

We accept works until October 26th 2009. Digital text works can be sent directly as PDFs to publisher@labyrintpress.com
