WOW invites designers and creators from around the globe to challenge the conventional, create the unimaginable, defy creative expectations and enchant the world with an extraordinary garment. For over 35 years, finalists' wonderful works of art have come to life in the spectacular annual WOW Show, held in Wellington, New Zealand - and attracting delighted audiences of around 60,000 people.

WOW Head of Competition, Sarah Nathan, describes the event as the perfect platform for people to fulfill their creative dreams. Designers often share a common value – the desire to push the limits of imagination and medium. The opportunity to connect with other designers is also a huge part of the WOW experience, Nathan says.

To inspire designers when entering, there are six section themes or 'worlds' to consider. This includes three recurring sections; Aotearoa, Avant-garde and Open, and three new sections, Natural World, Geometric Abstraction, and Crazy Curiosities of the Creature Carnival that are unique to 2024.

Whether entering to design free from commercial restraints, to add to a student portfolio, or to push the limits of one's imagination, the WOW Competition offers a truly unique creative outlet for all who enter. The WOW Competition offers the chance to access a Designer Development Award for future artistic growth, or an exclusive internship with global design company, Wētā Workshop (Wellington, New Zealand).

WOW also provides wearable art creatives and designers a platform to experiment with new techniques and technologies and build on professional portfolios of creative work.  

AWARDS & PRIZES:

The competition offers over $185,000 NZ in prize value. Up to 33 awards, including the coveted Supreme WOW Award, are awarded to finalist designers each year. Designers are also offered the opportunity to apply for exclusive residencies and internships with global creative companies; to learn and build on professional portfolios of work.

Upcycled: Garment designed to maximise use of discarded materials. Made from at least 85% post-consumer and/or post-industrial repurposed materials.
Circular: Garment designed with its end-of-life value in-mind. Made from at least 85% materials that can be easily separated at garment end-of-life and readily recycled and/or composted.

• NEW ZEALAND DESIGN AWARD
  Acknowledging the creativity and excellence of New Zealand designers. For the New Zealand Design Award, all members of a design team must be citizens or permanent residents of New Zealand.

• INTERNATIONAL DESIGN AWARD
  Acknowledging the creativity and excellence of international designers, a prize of NZ $5,000 is awarded to the best international design from each of the following regions:

To qualify for the International Design Awards, all members of a design team must be citizens or permanent residents of the same region.

In addition, an Overall International Winner is selected and receives NZ $6,000 plus a travel prize of up to NZ $4,000.

• WĒTĀ WORKSHOP EMERGING DESIGNER AWARD
  The winner of this Award is chosen by Sir Richard Taylor, CEO and Creative Director of Wētā Workshop, from across all categories of the competition.
  The winner will have the unique opportunity to spend time behind-the-scenes at Wētā Workshop, and receives NZ $6,000, flights from anywhere in the world plus accommodation in Wellington for up to four weeks.
  WINNER: NZ $6,000

• WOW DESIGNER DEVELOPMENT AWARD
  This award has been created to support a designer through a professional development opportunity relating to their chosen field of creative practice. The Award is currently open to Finalists in the 2023 competition.
  WOW will select the award winner based on an application which outlines the designers' creative or technical goals and presents an excellent opportunity to pursue professional development via education, training, experience, mentorship, or internship.
  WINNER: NZ $7,500

• STUFF PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD
  The winner of this Award is chosen by the show audience via an online voting system. The People's Choice Award, brought to you by STUFF, is announced after the conclusion of the show season.
  WINNER: NZ $2,500

HOW TO ENTER:

There is no entry fee to enter the WOW Competition. The WOW Competition is open to anyone over the age of 18, from anywhere around the world. Individuals or teams consisting of two or three designers are permitted.

You may submit multiple entries in the competition.
An entry can consist of up to three garments, and there is no limit to the number of entries that you can submit.

Fundamental to the WOW Competition is the principle that anyone can enter, and anyone can win. Competition finalists are determined through a closed-judging process where the judges are presented with the garment name and inspiration; however, the designer's details and background experience are not disclosed, allowing the work to be considered solely on its own merit.

Two Year Fellowship

The Visual Artist Fellowship is designed to help artists in the Philadelphia Region reach new levels in their careers. Artists will be asked to demonstrate a vision for the next stage of their professional or artistic practice and a clear plan for CFEVA's proposed role in reaching it. Artists will be selected by an independent Board of Artistic Advisors based on the merit of their artwork and a demonstrated ability to reach stated goals. Four artists will be selected to receive a full range of career support during the two-year Fellowship period. In addition, selected artists will receive a $1,000 award and up to $3,000 to cover expenses related to the proposed activity.

We invite all artists to apply with their current needs and ideas, regardless of their status as emerging, mid-career, or established. Artists within 150 miles of Philadelphia are eligible to apply. Please note each application is reviewed carefully and all applicants are also eligible for exhibitions, sales, teaching, and other opportunities through CFEVA.

CFEVA support includes:

• $4,000 stipend
• Guidance and career support from CFEVA's Director of Artist Programs and Board of Artistic Advisors.
• Introductions to notable curators and collectors.
• Career Enhancement Excursions, such as visits to art fairs and private collections.
• Opportunities to foster peer dialogue, including an annual retreat designed to help Fellows and alumni tackle critical issues facing artists today.

Residency Overview

Students will be assigned a mentor but must be able to work independently in the studio.

Students are allocated 8 - 12 hours per week to work in the studio at a subsidized rate of $50 per week.

Successful applicants will provide their own materials, including screens, fabrics, pigments, dyes and auxiliaries.

Most studio-owned equipment is available for use by student residents who have undergone studio orientation. Residents will supply their own specialized equipment. Please note not all equipment and textile processes can be accommodated in the studio.

Student residency placements are open to art and design students exploring textiles in their work. Students who successfully complete a residency may be eligible to renew another residency for the following academic term.

The Rittenhouse Square Fine Art Show is proud to be consistently recognized as one of the best Fine Art Shows in the country. Several important features distinguish our shows from other art shows.

This is an originals only fine art show. Only non-functional, original work created by the artist may be shown, and all work must be for sale. All work displayed must be of the same or better quality than the work submitted to the jury process. 

UNACCEPTABLE TYPES OF WORK
No reproductions of any kind may be shown, displayed, sold or promoted at this event. Excluded work includes, but is not limited to: photography, calendars, note cards, digital or computer-generated art, posters, books, or limited-edition print reproductions, including work created using stencils, creating almost identical multiples or a similar theme of assembly line and/or production work.  
 
No functional work of any kind may be shown, displayed or sold at this event.  Excluded work includes, but is not limited to: jewelry, t-shirts, plates, cups, bowls, clothing, hats, pottery, vases, vessels, jars, dishes, lamps or furniture and mirrors.
 
MEDIA CATEGORIES 
The following is a list and explanation of the categories of art acceptable for jury.
 
Oils/Acrylics
Two-dimensional works created in either oils or acrylics.
 
Watercolors
Two-dimensional works created in watercolors, gouache or tempera paint.
 
Printmaking
Printed works for which the artist has manipulated the plates, stones, or screens. These works must be printed by the artist and not an associate or helper.  In addition, printmakers are required to disclose their creative process and printing technique.  The only exception to this is monotypes, which by definition are one-of-a-kind works.  All prints must be signed and numbered as a limited edition.

Drawing/Pastels
Two-dimensional works created using a dry medium, including pencil, graphite, ink, charcoal, wax crayons, or pastels.
 
Sculpture
Nonfunctional three-dimensional work created in any medium, including stone, wood, metal, glass, ceramics, fiber and 3-D mixed media.
 
Mixed Media
Two dimensional work that incorporates more than one type of physical material or medium.

Exhibition Concept
Derived from the French verb coller, meaning to glue/stick, collage refers to both the method and art form in which paper and other media are arranged and affixed to a substrate. Though the first evidence of collage coincided with the invention of paper in China around 200 BC, it was not until the early 20th century that artists first used it as a technique.

Collage has since evolved into a popular and powerful medium that transcends traditional artistic boundaries. Versatile and accessible, collage allows for a creative amalgamation of 2- and 3-D materials, creating a fascinating visual interplay of textures, colors, and forms that explore the juxtaposition of seemingly disparate elements. From analog cut-and-paste to digital layering, this exhibition celebrates the deft use of materials and creative spirit of collage.

Fiber Art Now is pleased to announce a new Call for Entry: Fiber in 3D. We want to see how your artwork occupies space and explores dimension. Show us your sculptures, vessels, installations, wearables, and three-dimensional work for the wall and floor.

Artists are invited to enter TWO innovative three-dimensional artworks of original design that stretch the boundaries of fiber and textile techniques. The artwork must include a fiber component or textile technique.

Juried selections will be featured in the Spring 2024 issue of Fiber Art Now and will be eligible for the onsite exhibition at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, January 27 through May 4, 2024. Enter your 3D artwork during the month of November.

We’ll be celebrating 50 Years of International Quilt Festival

The roots of International Quilt Festival began in 1974 when Founder Karey Bresenhan opened an antique store in Houston that soon became a quilt shop (Great Expectations Quilts). The next year, she held a “thank you” show, sale, and event for customers. Since then, over the years and at larger and larger venues, Festival has become the world’s greatest quilt show, sale, and Quiltmaking Academy, with tens of thousands of attendees coming from the U.S. and dozens of countries to Houston each fall to celebrate the artistry, creativity, and love of quilting.

For our 50th anniversary celebration in 2024, we’ll have a beautiful exhibit featuring red, white, & blue quilts! Whether antique or contemporary or Art, Traditional, or Modern in design, you can submit your quilt to be part of this once-in-a-lifetime exhibit!

Limit three (3) entries per person.
Each work must measure a minimum of 36” on each side.
The quilt can be NO LONGER than 110” ON A SIDE.

Quilt must read as red, white and blue. Small areas of other colors may be in the design of a fabric but the colors of the quilt must read as Red, White, and Blue.

Only quilts should be submitted. 
There is a nonrefundable $20 submission fee per quilt.
There is no made by date.

CONTEXTILE invites all artists (national and international) to present artworks to the competition for the International Exhibition, as part of the programme of its 7th Edition, Contextile 2024 – Contemporary Textile Art Biennial, to be held in the city of Guimarães, Portugal, from the 7th September to the 15th December 2024.

In 2024, the Contextile biennial focuses its activities on the thematic concept To TOUCH, transversal to all the rubrics of its programmatic contents.

The International Exhibition will be composed by 50 artworks from 50 artists, 45 of these works will be selected for exhibition indoors and 5 works for outdoors (public space).

The artistic works will be selected by an international jury, composed by Lala de Dios (art historian, curator and teacher of textile), Janis Jefferies (Emeritus professor of visual arts and curator), Magda Soboń (textile artist and visual arts teacher), Cindy Steiler (visual artist), Cláudia Melo (artistic director of Contextile 2024).

The jury will also award an Acquisition Prize of €7.000,00 (seven thousand Euros) and two Honourable Mentions with prizes award (see selection process of the Regulations), at the moment of the biennial’s opening.

The 50 works of the international exhibition may also be selected, during the biennial, for the ATP – Associação Têxtil e Vestuário de Portugal Acquisition prize, in the amount of €2.500,00 euros.

The interested artists may apply with new creations or recent artworks, until the 8th March 2024, being accepted all artistic expressions in the visual arts disciplines. The proposals and artworks submitted for the competition will have to be around the textile element, through its concept, theme, techniques or materials. 

The artworks will have to be highly creative, original, technically competent and relate to the theme and concept of this 7th edition.

The application will only be considered finalized and validated after payment of the registration fee: €10.00 (euros) / $11,00 USD.
