Material Matrix is an exhibit celebrating the 60th anniversary of Contemporary Handweavers of Houston and honoring the many talented artists both within the guild and the Texas fiber community at large. The title for this exhibit was selected inrecognition of the convergence of traditional and contemporary techniques and themes in the work of 21st century fiber artists, and as a reflection of the open-ended and inclusive nature of today’s fiber community.
ELIGIBILITY
Open to all members of Contemporary Handweavers of Houston, and to non-members who are Texas residents. All work must be the original work of the artist, and must have been completed within two years of the entry deadline. All work must be at least 50% fiber and utilized fiber related techniques. Collaborations are acceptable as long as all artists are recognized.
To be eligible, work must fit within one of the following categories:
- Handweaving -- including basketry and beadweaving
- Items made from handspun yarn (no skeins)
- Felt
- Silk Fusion
- Braiding
Items may be submitted as either 2D or 3D. The 3D category includes sculptural items, garments, and hats. The 2D category includes wall hangings, window treatments, rugs, table linens, and throws.
Installation work is encouraged.
The show is open to all CHH members, regardless of residence, and to non-members who are Texas residents. Entry fees will be
$30 for CHH members, $40 for non-members. A maximum of 3 entries per artist may be submitted. Only two images per entry will be allowed. All entries must be submitted in digital format via CD.

Cash awards will be offered, funded by CHH. Three awards of merit, at $250 each, and one best of show, at $500 will be given.
