The American Craft Council's mission is to champion craft. As a national, nonprofit public educational organization founded in 1943 by Aileen Osborn Webb, the Council actively promotes the understanding and appreciation of contemporary American craft through its bimonthly magazine AMERICAN CRAFT, annual juried shows presenting artists and their work, leadership conferences, awards for excellence, research library, workshops and seminars.
STANDARDS STATEMENT
To ensure a high level of quality in the work exhibited in American Craft Council Shows, each jury is instructed to adhere to these guidelines in making decisions: whether produced in quantity or as one-of-a-kind, the ideal handmade work refl ects excellence and the unique vision of its maker; it must be well conceived and skillfully executed, without technical faults.
APPLICATION PROCEDURES
To exhibit in any American Craft Council Show in 2011 an artist must submit five digitalimages to the annual jury by July 25, 2010 at 12 midnight (MDT) via Zapp, the online application system (http://www.zapplication.org/) and receive a jury screening score. This score will be used to judge acceptance into all 2011 shows. File submissions are accepted only once every year.
NOTE: Application deadline for 2011 shows is Sunday, July 25, 2010 at 12 MIDNIGHT MDT. The late application deadline for 2011 shows is August 1, 2010 at 12 midnight MDT. A $100 late fee will apply for all applications received between July 25 and August 1.
Artists apply in one of three categories that best defi nes their work. A separate jury of seven people is chosen for each of the three application categories. All works must be the designs of the applicant and made in the United States or Canada by the applicant or under his/her direct supervision.
Category I Functional or sculptural work for interiors/exteriors – glass and ceramic
Category II Functional or sculptural work for interiors/exteriors – all other media
Category III Clothing, jewelry and wearable accessories
Applicants are asked to further classify their work by identifying the principal material in which they work (ceramic, fiber, glass, metal, etc.) or the primary type of work they create (furniture and lighting, floor coverings, jewelry, etc.)
NEW ARTIST CATEGORY
The American Craft Council encourages new and emerging artists to apply to its shows. An artist may choose to apply in this category only if he/she has not exhibited in any Council show. Exhibitors accepted in this category receive specialized signage, and are promoted through press releases and show websites.
SPECIAL CATEGORIES
Show applicants in all media are eligible to participate in these special categories, which are used in promoting the shows. If you exhibit in one or both of these special categories, you will be listed in the show directories by these categories as well as by your work medium.
GREENCRAFT
Exhibitors who use found, sustainable green or recycled materials and/or eco-friendly techniques are eligible to participate in the GreenCraft category. Participants will receive special consideration by our PR teams, colorful signage at the show, and a special notation in the show directory.
LAWN & GARDEN
Exhibitors who make furniture, décor, accessories for outdoor and/or lawn and garden are eligible to participate in the Lawn & Garden category. Participants will receive special consideration by our PR teams, colorful signage at the show, and a special notation in the show directory.
HANDMADE UNDER $100
Exhibitors who make a portion of their work at price points of $100 or less are eligible to participate in the Handmade Under $100 category. Participants will receive special consideration by our PR teams, colorful signage at the show, and a special notation in the show directory.
FEES
A $10 processing and handling fee must accompany each set of images. Applications to each show in the 2011 show season are $30 per show for each set of images submitted. Jury results for all shows will be e-mailed to shows applicants in September 2010.
Booth fees vary by show location. In general, American Craft Council booth fees cover: space rental; booth sign; listing in specifi c show programs; one free assistant badge per show; five free guest tickets for each retail show in which an exhibitor participates; promotional materials for the exhibitor’s use; national advertising campaigns; website presence; discounted tickets on public days.
