Skein Competition Information & Rules

  • All entries must be received by September 8, 2007. Mail-in entries will be accepted. If you are unable to attend the show but would like to participate, please include prepaid US postage and return box and your entries will be returned to you. Entries, Entry Forms and check or money order should be mailed to the Skein Coordinator. Make check or money order payable to SAFONA.
  • Entry fee is $6.00 per entry.
  • Class limits: Each exhibitor is limited one entry per Category/Class. All entries must be handspun only. No mill spun entries will be accepted.
  • Show limits: Farms may enter as many classes as desired, no limit on total classes entered.
  • Skeins must be at least 1 oz, neatly wound, "figure 8" tied in 4 places and placed in a clear, one gallon ziplock-style plastic bag. No identifying labels or description should be placed.
  • Each skein must be accompanied by a 3x5 card with written construction consisting of, but not limited to, fiber preparation, fiber content; techniques used and intended use of yarn. Description will be included in judging points.
  • Entries must be left on display until 12 noon on Sunday, October 7th. Any entries not picked up after the show will become the property of SAFONA.
  • Awards: Ribbons for 1st through 3rd will be given along with special award for "Judge's Choice".

Skein Categories:
A. Yarn spun from commercially prepared fibers (roving, bats, tops, etc.).
B. Yarn spun from fiber hand prepared by the spinner.

Skein Classes:
1. Drop spindle - any ply (at least 50% alpaca).
2. Fine singles (20+ wraps per inch) 100% Huacaya.
3. Fine singles (20+ wraps per inch) 100% Suri.
4. Classic 2 or more ply 100% Huacaya.
5. Classic 2 or more ply 100% Suri.
6. Classic 2 or more ply blends (at least 50% alpaca).
7. 2 or more ply yarn natural dyed by spinner (100% alpaca).
8. 2 or more ply yarn chemically dyed by spinner (100% alpaca).
9. 2 or more ply yarn natural dyed by spinner (at least 50% alpaca).
10. 2 or more ply yarn chemically dyed by spinner (at least 50% alpaca).
11. Novelty yarn - must be spun using a defined technique (slub, boucle, beaded, etc.).
12. Handspinners dyed yarn basket - a minimum of 8 ozs.of yarn (at least 50% alpaca) spun in any manner for use in one project displayed in a basket. Include a description of fiber techniques used to spin the yarn and its intended use. A pattern, sketch or sample swatch of the project must be displayed. This class will be judged on craftsmanship and creativity.
13. Handspinners natural colored yarn basket - same as class #12).
14. Novice spinner (spinning one year or less) 2 ply or more.

Judging Criteria:
1. Items will be judged anonymously with points given for visual appeal, luster/brightness, cleanliness, color, skein appearance, handle, craftsmanship, cohesiveness, twist & execution, appropriate number of plies, diameter of yarn and structurally durable.
2. 1st - 3rd place ribbons will be awarded in each category and class with special award of Judge's Choice.
3. The Judge may change the category/class of an item at his/her discretion.
