Skein, Garment, and Fiber Arts Competition
Fall Fiber Festival & Montpelier Sheep Dog Trials
OCTOBER 6 & 7, 2007



RULES
  • Only one entry per class will be accepted from each entrant. Entry will be made of natural fibers only.
  • Each article must be made by the entrant only.
  • Work must have been completed in the year since the 2006 FALL FIBER FESTIVAL.
  • There is a fee of $2.00 per skein or article. Payment must accompany entry form.
  • Entry must be received NO LATER THAN SEPTEMBER 21 2007. Entries arriving after that time will not be accepted.
  • Judging will take place the week prior to the Festival. All entries will be on display under supervision during the Festival. No entries will be released until Sunday, October 7, between 4:00-5:00 p.m.
  • If you need to have your entry returned by mail or UPS, you must include postage, appropriate self addressed packaging and insurance with your entry form. Unclaimed items will become the property of the Fall Fiber Festival of Virginia, Inc.
  • The Festival Committee will make every effort to display and care for items entered, but assumes no responsibility for damage or loss.
  • Ribbons will be awarded for each class. A rosette will be awarded to the winner of each Division. A Rosette and a prize will be awarded for the Best in Show. First and second place in each class will also be awarded a prize.
  • Please send a separate entry form for each item entered.

CATEGORIES:

DIVISION I: HANDSPUN YARN

Each skein will consist of no less than 2 ounces (Lace Weight skeins may be 1 ounce). Skeins should have circumferences of 1 1/2 to 2 yards and be neatly wound and tied in at least 3 places. Fibers must be clearly identified. If fiber is dyed, give description of dyeing process. Handmade articles will be judged on craftsmanship, creativity, technical ability, finishing and appropriate use of materials.

CLASS:

1. Singles Yarn - demonstrates even twist and good handle.

2. Plied Yarn - two or more singles, evenly plied.

3. Blended Yarn – handspun yarn, singles or plied, of wool combined with another fiber.

4. Novelty Yarn - any combination of techniques or fibers spun creatively and consistently.

5. Novice Spinner - (spinning one year or less) A singles or plied yarn.

6. Lace Weight Yarn – singles or plied yarn, must be 18WPI or less, skeins should be 1 ounce or more.

7. Spindle Spun Yarn - singles or plied yarn

Classes 1-5 will be judged on craftsmanship. Class 6 and 7 will be judged on craftsmanship and creativity.

DIVISIONS II – IX will be judged on craftsmanship and creativity, technical ability, proper finishing and appropriate use of materials.

Commercial yarns must be identified and acknowledgment given to pattern source.

DIVISION II: HANDMADE ARTICLES OF HANDSPUN YARN - Can be wearable or non-wearable, using any of the techniques used in the other Divisions.

DIVISION III: HANDKNITTED ARTICLES – commercial or handspun yarn.

DIVISION IV: MACHINE KNITTED ARTICLES- commercial or handspun yarn.

DIVISION V: HANDCROCHETED ARTICLES- commercial or handspun yarn.

15. Non-wearable

DIVISION VI: HANDWOVEN ARTICLES- commercial or handspun yarn.

CLASS:

16. Wearable

17. Non-wearable

DIVISION VII: HANDMADE FELT ARTICLES

CLASS:

18. Wearable

19. Non-Wearable

DIVISION VIII: HAND-DYED ARTICLES- Items hand-dyed using natural or synthetic dyes on natural fibers. A description of the process used must be included. (Skeins must meet criteria for Division I)

CLASS:

20. Hand-dyed Yarn – Singles or plied yarn

21. Wearable Items

22. Non-Wearable Items

DIVISION IX: OTHER TECHNIQUES-

23. Articles made from natural fibers incorporating techniques not included in other divisions such as rug hooking, locker hooking, embroidery, needlepoint, macramé, etc.
