Ashfield Council in NSW is calling for applications from artists to live and practice their art for between 3 to 6 months at Thirning Villa.

Residencies will be available during the next twelve months from the end of November 2007 to October 2008. The residency suits artists who practice in disciplines including visual and performing arts, writers, musicians, craft, design and film and is open to international artists.

Each program is developed in consultation witht he artist and these may include workshops, artist talks, performances, open studios or talks in schools.

Artists are invited to submit proposals for a Community Cultural Development residency during November 2007 to October 2008.

All applicants will be advised by end of September 2007.

LOVE ARMOR Knitting Project

LOVE ARMOR

Military and innocent civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan experience death, maiming, and unspeakable trauma every day. Hearts ache for the men, women, and children in these war zones. Feeling repulsed, helpless, and desperate to express compassion, I propose the project Love Armor.

My vision is to take an icon of this war, the Humvee, and swaddle it in comfort and quiet. The Love Armor, aka: Humvee Cozy, is a knitted coverlet for a full size military Humvee. Knitting takes time, concentration, and may be considered a meditation. Today we sit down and knit meditatively thinking about the trauma occurring in the Middle East.

This life-size “cozy” will fit over a Humvee M1026. A standard military Humvee measures 15’ x 7’ x 6’. Knitted of white cotton twine and form fitted to the Humvee, this “cozy” may be installed hugging a Humvee or floating on its own.

Knitters and artists across the country will execute Shirley Klinghoffer’s concept of the Love Armor in collaboration with Sarah Hewitt. Shirley Klinghoffer is a very accomplished artist working in various mediums, http://www.shirleyklinghoffer.com. Though this project is a departure from each of our styles and methods of working, we feel passionately about making this statement regarding the current situation in the Middle East.

We are now soliciting patterns for our winter issue which goes live in December 2007.

Knitty's biggest issue is winter -- we pack it with knitwear, accessories, gifts and whimsies. We call the winter issue our "last-minute gifts and garments" issue. We're looking for items to wear at holiday parties, clasic-but-fashionable projects to knit in the dim cold winter days, quick-knit gifts that don't look quick to knit. Always think fashion [is it something you're dying to wear?]. Whimsies -- items that defy description -- are always welcome at Knitty. We are always looking for great men's designs: classic, fashionable, wearable and enjoyable to knit. As a rule, we avoid novelty yarn unless there's a really good reason for it.

Please note: Knitty is religion neutral, so nothing related to any religion will be published.

Submissions must be new -- not previously shown in another mag or on your website, blog, livejournal, Flickr or Ravelry. Once your pattern is published in Knitty, you may include a picture of your design on your website with a link to the Knitty website.

We cannot accept submissions of crocheted items.  Knitted items with a small amount of crochet are most welcome.

Contributors receive an honorarium in the range of $75 - $100.

Articles

Written submissions for the fall issue must be received by September 15, 2007. Submissions must be from 1000 to 2000 words in length. Submit files in MS Word or as text-only documents. If accepted for publication, your work will be edited for clarity and format.

Skein Competition Information & Rules All entries must be received by September 8, 2007. Mail-in entries will be accepted. If you are unable to attend the show but would like to participate, please include prepaid US postage and return box and your entries will be returned to you. Entries, Entry Forms and check or money order should be mailed to the Skein Coordinator. Make check or money order payable to SAFONA. Entry fee is $6.00 per entry. Class limits: Each exhibitor is limited one entry per Category/Class. All entries must be handspun only. No mill spun entries will be accepted. Show limits: Farms may enter as many classes as desired, no limit on total classes entered. Skeins must be at least 1 oz, neatly wound, "figure 8" tied in 4 places and placed in a clear, one gallon ziplock-style plastic bag. No identifying labels or description should be placed. Each skein must be accompanied by a 3x5 card with written construction consisting of, but not limited to, fiber preparation, fiber content; techniques used and intended use of yarn. Description will be included in judging points. Entries must be left on display until 12 noon on Sunday, October 7th. Any entries not picked up after the show will become the property of SAFONA. Awards: Ribbons for 1st through 3rd will be given along with special award for "Judge's Choice". Skein Categories: A. Yarn spun from commercially prepared fibers (roving, bats, tops, etc.). B. Yarn spun from fiber hand prepared by the spinner. Skein Classes: 1. Drop spindle - any ply (at least 50% alpaca). 2. Fine singles (20+ wraps per inch) 100% Huacaya. 3. Fine singles (20+ wraps per inch) 100% Suri. 4. Classic 2 or more ply 100% Huacaya. 5. Classic 2 or more ply 100% Suri. 6. Classic 2 or more ply blends (at least 50% alpaca). 7. 2 or more ply yarn natural dyed by spinner (100% alpaca). 8. 2 or more ply yarn chemically dyed by spinner (100% alpaca). 9. 2 or more ply yarn natural dyed by spinner (at least 50% alpaca). 10. 2 or more ply yarn chemically dyed by spinner (at least 50% alpaca). 11. Novelty yarn - must be spun using a defined technique (slub, boucle, beaded, etc.). 12. Handspinners dyed yarn basket - a minimum of 8 ozs.of yarn (at least 50% alpaca) spun in any manner for use in one project displayed in a basket. Include a description of fiber techniques used to spin the yarn and its intended use. A pattern, sketch or sample swatch of the project must be displayed. This class will be judged on craftsmanship and creativity. 13. Handspinners natural colored yarn basket - same as class #12). 14. Novice spinner (spinning one year or less) 2 ply or more. Judging Criteria: 1. Items will be judged anonymously with points given for visual appeal, luster/brightness, cleanliness, color, skein appearance, handle, craftsmanship, cohesiveness, twist & execution, appropriate number of plies, diameter of yarn and structurally durable. 2. 1st - 3rd place ribbons will be awarded in each category and class with special award of Judge's Choice. 3. The Judge may change the category/class of an item at his/her discretion.

RULES

• Only one entry per class will be accepted from each entrant. Entry will be made of natural fibers only.
• Each article must be made by the entrant only.
• Work must have been completed in the year since the 2006 FALL FIBER FESTIVAL.
• There is a fee of $2.00 per skein or article. Payment must accompany entry form.
• Entry must be received NO LATER THAN SEPTEMBER 21 2007. Entries arriving after that time will not be accepted.
• Judging will take place the week prior to the Festival. All entries will be on display under supervision during the Festival. No entries will be released until Sunday, October 7, between 4:00-5:00 p.m.
• If you need to have your entry returned by mail or UPS, you must include postage, appropriate self addressed packaging and insurance with your entry form. Unclaimed items will become the property of the Fall Fiber Festival of Virginia, Inc.
• The Festival Committee will make every effort to display and care for items entered, but assumes no responsibility for damage or loss.
• Ribbons will be awarded for each class. A rosette will be awarded to the winner of each Division. A Rosette and a prize will be awarded for the Best in Show. First and second place in each class will also be awarded a prize.

• Please send a separate entry form for each item entered.

CATEGORIES:

DIVISION I: HANDSPUN YARN

Each skein will consist of no less than 2 ounces (Lace Weight skeins may be 1 ounce). Skeins should have circumferences of 1 1/2 to 2 yards and be neatly wound and tied in at least 3 places. Fibers must be clearly identified. If fiber is dyed, give description of dyeing process. Handmade articles will be judged on craftsmanship, creativity, technical ability, finishing and appropriate use of materials.

CLASS:

1. Singles Yarn - demonstrates even twist and good handle.

2. Plied Yarn - two or more singles, evenly plied.

3. Blended Yarn – handspun yarn, singles or plied, of wool combined with another fiber.

4. Novelty Yarn - any combination of techniques or fibers spun creatively and consistently.

5. Novice Spinner - (spinning one year or less) A singles or plied yarn.

6. Lace Weight Yarn – singles or plied yarn, must be 18WPI or less, skeins should be 1 ounce or more.

7. Spindle Spun Yarn - singles or plied yarn

Classes 1-5 will be judged on craftsmanship. Class 6 and 7 will be judged on craftsmanship and creativity.

DIVISIONS II – IX will be judged on craftsmanship and creativity, technical ability, proper finishing and appropriate use of materials.

Commercial yarns must be identified and acknowledgment given to pattern source.

DIVISION II: HANDMADE ARTICLES OF HANDSPUN YARN - Can be wearable or non-wearable, using any of the techniques used in the other Divisions.

Make It Yourself With Wool Contest
2007-2008

THE OBJECTIVES

• To promote the beauty and versatility of wool fabrics and yarns.
• To encourage personal creativity in sewing, knitting and crocheting with wool fabrics and yarns.
• To recognize creative skills.
• To develop life skills, including: being responsible for one's self, being a good sport, accepting judge's decisions, and learning about and appreciating diversity.

WHO CAN ENTER?

• Preteens, age 12 and under
• Juniors, ages 13-16
• Seniors, ages 17-24
• Adults, age 25 and older (Age as of December 31, 2006)

Anyone regardless of race, creed or sex who meets age and other guidelines may participate. Contestants must select, construct and model their own garments. Made for others entries: the intended wearer must model garments.

FABRICS/YARNS

• 100% wool or wool blend (minimum of 60% wool or specialty fiber) for each fashion fabric or yarn used. Specialty wool fibers include mohair, cashmere, alpaca, camel, llama and vicuna.
• The entire garment body (back, front and sleeves) must be wool or wool-blend fabric.
• Trims, facings, linings, interfacings and underlinings may be fabrics other than wool or wool blends.

THE JUDGING CRITERIA

• Appropriateness to contestant's lifestyle
• Coordination of fabric/yarn with garment style and design
• Contestant's presentation
• Construction quality
• Creativity
• Judging is private and the judges' decision is final.

HOW TO ENTER

You must participate in the state where you live or attend school. You may enter more than one garment, using a separate form for each entry. Past National Junior and Senior winners may not compete again in the same age division. Past National Adult photo winner may not compete again for 3 years. Complete and mail attached entry form as directed, with non-refundable fee: $5 Preteens, $10 Juniors, Seniors, Adults, Made for Others, Fashion/Apparel Design Attach a 5"x5" sample of each fabric or knitted, crocheted or woven swatch, to each entry form.

THE PRIZES

• Junior and Senior state winners advance to the National Competition.
• Adult state winners send 5"x7" photos and video (maximum 3 minutes) of themselves wearing garments to national photo competition. National Adult winner receives a trip to model in the National Competition.
• Fabrics, sewing books, equipment and notions are awarded at State and National levels.
• Scholarships are awarded at National level:

$ 2,000 American Sheep Industry Women (Junior & Senior Winners)

$ 1,000 Mohair Council of America (Junior & Senior Award for a complete garment made of Mohair)

$ 1,000 Pendleton Woolen Mills (Junior Winner)

$ 1,000 American Wool Council Fashion/Apparel Design

Whip up is a multi author site with contributors from around the world united by a passion for making things, for beautiful design and for a desire to share ideas with others. The editor and originator of this site is Kathreen Ricketson.

We are looking for tutorials and submissions that fit within Whip Up’s feel - read our Manifesto for more information. We are looking for thematic articles and tutorials to fit within the months themes - see monthly themes below - but also timely articles outside of these themes will be considered , such as exhibition and pattern reviews, craft memes, fun, frivolous and extreme ideas, etc that cannot wait and do not fit within the theme.

The Fort Point Arts Community Gallery is a non-profit volunteer-run artist organization dedicated to supporting artistic creation through exhibitions and public programs of local and regional artists. The FPAC Gallery is a 1,000+ square foot space at 300 Summer Street in Boston. Proposals are currently being accepted for the upcoming exhibition 2008-2009 Season. Each exhibition runs approximately 5 weeks. Proposals are open to all media.

JUROR
The FPAC Gallery is pleased to have Raphaela Platow as guest juror. Raphaela Platow is the former chief curator of the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University. She was the international curator in residence at the Contemporary Art Museum in Raleigh, NC and recently accepted the position of Director at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinatti OH.

International Fiber Collaborative

INTERNATIONAL FIBER COLLABORATIVE
Gas Station Project 2007-2008


The goal for the International Fiber Collaborative is to give a opportunity to people who crochet or knit, whether professional artists or hobbyists, to come together all over the world to express our concerns towards our countries extreme dependency on oil for energy. Those who participate will crochet or knit 36" x 36" fiber panels that will express each artists view on this topic. By taking the step to create a panel with any design, and sending it in, in the larger picture, is expressing your concern towards this topic. Once all 800 panels that are needed are received, they will be sewn together to completely cover an abandoned gas station and gas pumps in central New York.

Relief on panels is encouraged. Self-expression of topic is up to the artist, all panels are accepted. Natural materials are recommended but artist are not limited.

Entry fee is free.

Once all panels are received around the world they will be crocheted together to create a large fitted covering to completely envelope an existing abandoned gas station. Separate panels will be crocheted to cover the detached gas pumps.

Installation will take place Saturday April 12,2008 at:

Panels will be installed through summer of 2008.

Upon completion of project, the gas station cover will go on tour to abandoned gas stations around the country, or sell the individual panels to raise money for a non-for-profit Fiber organization. (Suggestions are welcome).

Unless otherwise noted panels will not be returned to artist.
