This is an open invitation for members of The Surface Design Association in New Zealand, Australia and those in African countries to participate in an SDA exhibition in 2024. The theme of the exhibition is TIME.

While many any of us connect time with the passage of the tides or seasons and this has long established cultural roots across the world, this is not a universal viewpoint. Notions around Time “belong to a culture’s ‘silent language’ – its invisible influence has far-reaching implications on how a culture perceives itself and the world around it.” This exhibition call invites artists to consider Time from their own personal cultural constructs and to use the ‘language’ of their practice to make this ‘visible’ to their audience.

The criteria for entry to this exhibition is a current membership with SDA. If your membership has lapsed or you are wanting to join the SDA to enter this jurying, there is a discount code for sign up to SDA.

Works must have been completed since January 2023.

Juror: Carole Shepheard ONZM. Carole is a NZ Printmaker and educator with a long practice in the arts.

VisArts is an active and important presence in the greater metropolitan arts community. A hub for artistic exploration and social impact since 1987, VisArts brings people together through shared creative experiences. The mission is to transform individuals and communities through the visual arts.

VisArts invites artists working in all media to apply for 2025 solo exhibitions in the Gibbs Street Gallery, Common Ground Gallery, and Concourse Gallery. Exhibitions in each of the galleries explore the breadth of contemporary art and feature emerging to mid-career artists. Exhibits reflect a wide range of media and experimental approaches that offer the viewer unexpected interactions with art.

  • The Gibbs Street Gallery is approximately 1,100 square feet with 16-foot ceilings. It’s at street level with floor-to-ceiling windows along one wall.
    International, national, and local artists are welcome to apply.  

  • The Common Ground Gallery is located on Floor 2 and is approximately 300 square feet.
    Artists must live in the Mid-Atlantic region to apply.

  • The Concourse Gallery is located on Floor 2 and is approximately 500 square feet. It has curved windows along one wall.
    International, national, and local artists are welcome to apply.   


Applicants who’ve participated in a solo exhibition at VisArts within the past two years are not eligible to apply.

The Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize is an international award for original, freestanding or wall-mounted sculptures of up to 80cm in any dimension. Over its 23-year history, the prize has featured some of the world’s most exciting contemporary sculptures, and continues to promote and celebrate artistic excellence. It is anticipated that between 45-60 entries will be selected for the exhibition of finalists.
 

Eligibility:
1. For the purpose of the Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize, sculptures are defined as freestanding, non-site specific, three-dimensional objects or wall-mounted objects.
2. Entries should not exceed 80cm in any dimension, and must have a stable base (or appropriate mount). The overall weight and dimensions must allow for easy
transportation, and not exceed the carrying capacity of two average persons.
3. All entries must be the original work of the submitting artist and must have been designed or completed within two years prior to September 2024
4. There is no limit to the number of entries an artist can submit. A separate entry form and fee must accompany each entry. Only one work per artist will be shown in the exhibition.
5. Collaborative entries are acceptable.

The Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize: An acquisitive award of $25,000
The Special Commendation Award: A non-acquisitive award of $2,000
The Mayor's Award: A non-acquisitive award of $1,000
The Viewers’ Choice: A non-acquisitive award of $1,000

VisArts invites applications and proposals from local, national, and international artists for one of two six-month residencies at our studios in Rockville, Maryland. Studio space is provided free of charge. Artists receive a $3,000 stipend. Gibbs Street Artists in Residence present their work in culminating solo exhibitions.  

Each year, VisArts’ Gibbs Street Artist Residency provides a unique opportunity for two dynamic individual artists or collaborative artist teams to create a new body of work, evolve an existing body of work, or develop a project in a stimulating, supportive environment over a period of six months. 

Admission to VisArts’ Gibbs Street Artist Residency is highly selective, based on a review of applications by rotating panels of artists and art professionals, including painters, sculptors, film and video artists, photographers, installation artists, interdisciplinary artists, and independent curators. 
 
VisArts is unable to provide assistance with visas for international artists.  VisArts’ Gibbs Street Artist Residency doesn’t provide artist housing.
 
Terms of Residency  
Qualified applicants are professional individual artists or collaborative artist teams over the age of 18. Students and commercial artists aren’t eligible to apply.  

Artists working in all media are welcome to apply, but VisArts can’t support the use of hazardous materials that require specific ventilation requirements. 

The studio may be used only for art-making activities. 

VisArts’ Gibbs Street Artist in Residence will be provided with a 169-square-foot studio, free of charge, for a period of six months. Each studio is equipped with a sink, Wi-Fi connection, and abundant natural light. Studio access is 24/7 except during special VisArts events (we’ll provide advance notice). The Artist must provide their own studio furniture. 

VisArts’ Gibbs Street Artist in Residence will:

  1. Maintain a regular presence in the Artist’s studio, with a recommended minimum of 28 hours/week.
  2. Participate in VisArts’ Studio Artist Program, which meets monthly to share ideas, community, and professional development.  
  3. Attend exhibition opening receptions and artist talks, and welcome the public during them as well as at scheduled Open Studio events.
  4. Present an artist talk, workshop, screening, and/or other mutually agreed upon public event that engages the VisArts and greater Rockville communities and resources.  
  5. Present a solo exhibition of work at VisArts at the end of their Residency.

The 95th Michigan Contemporary Art Exhibition continues a rich legacy of showcasing the work of Michigan artists, from talented beginners to accomplished professionals. A competitive show, the Michigan Contemporary presents a look at the issues, themes, and materials inspiring today’s Michigan artists. Featured media include painting, printmaking, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, jewelry, and installation. A visitor favorite, the exhibition engages, challenges, and inspires conversation. All Artists 18 years or older residing in Michigan may enter.

Eligible Entries:
Only original works completed in the last two years and not previously exhibited at the Muskegon Museum of Art are eligible. Commercial reproductions, including giclée prints, will not be accepted. Traditional print media, photography, and digital art should be from a limited edition. Wall mounted pieces may not exceed 6 feet wide by 12 feet high. Three-dimensional (standing) pieces may not exceed 10 feet high by 6 feet by 6 feet. Only work easily handled by two people will be accepted.

PRIZES:
Best of Show: $1,500
2nd Place: $1,000
3rd Place: $750
Additional prizes awarded, including purchase awards (purchase awards are equal to the stated sale price of the work).

Jonathan Thunder creates paintings and animated films that speak to popular culture, modern society, and his Ojibwe heritage.

Quilt National is a biennial international juried exhibition of contemporary innovative quilts.  As part of the commitment to foster and support emerging talent in the quilting and textile arts community, Quilt National 2025 announces the introduction of the “Artists under 35 Submission Fee Scholarship”. This initiative is designed to engage and encourage young artists under the age of 35 to actively participate in the Quilt National 2025 Call for Entry.

Quilt National is a biennial international juried exhibition of contemporary innovative quilts. Quilt National ’25 is the twenty-fourth in the series of international juried exhibitions dedicated to promoting the contemporary quilt by serving as a showcase for NEW artwork that provides the viewer with an appreciation of the variety of techniques and innovative trends in the medium of layered and stitched fabric.

RULES AND REQUIREMENTS

QUILTS ARE DEFINED BY THE FOLLOWING
● The artwork must possess the basic structural characteristics of a quilt.
● It must be predominately fiber or fabric-like material and MUST be composed of at least two full and distinct layers – a face layer and a backing layer.
● The face layer may be described by any or a combination of the following terms: pieced, appliquéd, whole cloth, or stitched/fused to a foundation.
● The face and backing layers must be held together by hand or machine-made functional quilting stitches or other elements that pierce all layers and are distributed throughout the surface of the artwork.
● At least some of these stitches or elements should be visible on the back of the artwork. As an alternative, the artwork may be a modular construction (an assemblage of smaller quilts.) Each individual module, however, must meet the above structural criteria.


ELIGIBILITY (truncated)
Any eligible quilt:
● All entries must be NEW artwork – completed on, or after, September 8, 2022.
● Has no vertical or horizontal dimension of any single piece or group of pieces exceeding 100 inches (254 centimeters).
● Has not and will not appear prior to May 23, 2025, in any local, regional, national, or international exhibition, including but not limited to group, solo, curated, invitational, and juried exhibitions.
● Has not and will not appear prior to May 23, 2025, in a print publication that has national or international distribution; this restriction includes SAQA publications.

These talented individuals possess a wealth of knowledge about contemporary textiles and fine art with decades of collective experience in the artistic, technical, and academic aspects of this exciting art form. The jurors will select artworks that represent unique approaches to the medium and demonstrate the breadth and variation of contemporary expressions.


PURCHASE AWARDS
The purchase awards will be given on opening weekend, and the quilts will tour for two years and then be placed in the International Quilt Museum’s Quilt National Collection for exhibition, study, and research.
 

  • Best in Show, $7,500 USD cash purchase prize
  • Award of Excellence, $5,000 USD cash purchase prize
  • Most Innovative Use of Material, $5,000 USD cash purchase prize
  • Emerging Artist, $2,500 USD cash purchase prize


CASH/TRAVEL AWARDS
These cash and travel awards will be awarded to Quilt National ’25 participating artists.

  • People’s Choice Award, $150
    This award is given to the artist with the piece receiving the most visitor votes during the exhibit.
  • Juror’s Award, $300
    This award is determined individually by each of the three Quilt National jurors.
  • Persistence Pays Award, $400, sponsored by Marvin Fletcher
    This prize is given to the artist who has submitted to Quilt National the most times without being accepted until their first successful submission.
  • SAQA Award, $500, sponsored by Studio Art Quilts Association
    The SAQA Award is awarded by the jurors to a quilt that is compelling, dynamic and progressive.
  • Best International Artist Award, $500
    This prize is granted to an accepted artist who is neither a US citizen nor a US resident (i.e. does not live in the US).
  • Quilts Japan Prize, sponsored by the Japanese Handicrafts Association.
    This prize is granted to an American artist as an expression of gratitude for the teaching and guidance that American quilters have given to Japanese quilters. Recipients will travel and teach in Japan.
  • Young Emerging Artist Award, $500, sponsored by Katie Pasquini Masopust
    This prize is granted to an accepted artist who is under the age of 35.
  • Outstanding Machine Pieced Quilt Award, $500, sponsored by Crow Timber Frame Barn, LLC
    This prize is granted to an accepted artist whose piece demonstrates excellence in machine piecing.


ENTRY FEE
A non-refundable entry fee of $50.00 (fifty US dollars). This fee includes the entry fee and the online submission of the full view and detail images of up to three quilts. Each artist will pay the entry fee once to submit up to three artworks.

The Exhibitions Program is a core part of the historic Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, Virginia, located in the greater Washington DC area.

Workhouse Building W-16 hosts three gallery spaces; the McGuireWoods Gallery on the second floor, and the Vulcan and Muse Galleries on the first floor, with approximately 15 total exhibitions programmed yearly. 


ENTRY GUIDELINES 

This open call facilitates submissions from parties interested in having a solo or group exhibition at Workhouse in Building W-16. Applications are reviewed by a jury panel every six months in January and June of each calendar year.

Selections will be made based on images and information submitted on the entry form.

Exhibitions will be placed in galleries based on medium, quantity of artworks, and availability in the Exhibitions Program calendar.
 

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Open to all artists 18 years and older.

The jurors will make final determinations. Size is limited to artwork that fits through a standard door. Floor works must be firmly stable. Large scale installations shall be installed by artist. Artworks to be assembled on site by Workhouse Arts Center must include detailed instructions provided by the artist. Wall-mounted pieces are limited to 20 lbs. per section.


The entry fee is $30.00 (non-refundable).

This open call is for artists interested in applying to the Studio Artist Program at Workhouse Arts Center. The 55-acre campus has 5 buildings of studios for artists – most disciplines allowed.

The Artist Program is a core part of the historic Workhouse Arts Center in the greater Washington DC area. The 70+ artists at Workhouse comprise several groups: Studio Artists, who sublease one of 52 studios on campus; Arches Gallery Artists, associate artists who pay pay a fee to exhibit and operate on campus; and Emerging Artists and Resident Artists, who sublease studios in the Glass and Ceramics programs.


Entry Guidelines

This open call facilitates submissions from parties interested in having a rental studio at Workhouse. There is no deadline for entries and applicants will be notified within 3 months of their submission date. Selections will be made based on images and information submitted on the entry form. Jurors are not required to provide feedback.
