Fiber Art Calls for Entry

A Digital Stitch in Time

Deadline: July 1, 2012 (EMAIL)

Call for Submissions
A Digital Stitch in Time

Alexia Mellor, Artist

Calling all artists whose practices are at the intersection of art, craft and digital technologies to be considered for inclusion in a forthcoming article about artist projects employing needlecraft techniques to translate, redefine and recontextualize images and lexicon sourced from digital and virtual culture.

No longer reserved for our grandmothers, needlecraft has become a subversive tool of counter-culture, interrogating knowledge and meaning, while encouraging an intimate participation with the digital through a laborious, and social process. Whether it is revealing the underlying relationship between computer coding and embroidery patterns, or documenting the digital landscape through a portrait of cotton cross-stitches, we consider the meaning of “social networks” and participatory production as artists explore collective meaning and ownership in the digital age.

If you are interested in having your work considered for inclusion in the article, please email an artist statement, CV and link to images of your work to: digitalstitching@gmail.com

Three jurors who are experts in the field and newly selected each year choose 120 artists from a large pool of applicants. Previous exhibitors must re-apply each year. No one is grandfathered into the show or given preference. Craft artists are selected on the basis of the originality, artistic conception, and quality of their work.

Diagonale is a unique in Canada: it defends and broadcasts contemporary artistic practices using fibers as a subject matter or material. The Center was born from a Council once focused exclusively on fiber arts but has progressively opened itself to include a wider array of practices. Diagonale supports the realization of innovative practices and activities which renew and reinterpret techniques of needle work, basketry and paper-making as well as multimedia installations, performances, photography, video art, ect.

Our yearly programming consists of six exhibits. The reflections are strong and varied; the uses of techniques are surprising and often interdisciplinary. The projects exhibited are selected by a jury of our members and peers.

Art in Rural Storefronts

Deadline: June 1, 2012 (EMAIL)

Call to Oregon Installation Artists
Art in Rural Storefronts

Corvallis, OR
October 2012: Exhibitions Installed
(Final Exhibition Dates TBA)

The Arts Center invites artists working in installation art to submit proposals for a new offsite exhibitions program, Art in Rural Storefronts. The program supports risk-taking and non-commercial artists by exhibiting work that would otherwise not be shown in traditional retail/gallery spaces.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria:

The application is open to all Oregon-based visual artists or artist groups. Artists must have an interest in transforming an unused storefront into a site-specific art installation that is relevant to a diverse rural community. Artists with experience working in media that constitute installations/integrated environments will have preference in the selection process.

Applications will be evaluated based on excellence, relevance, feasibility and the degree to which the proposal matches the project’s goal to exhibit work that would otherwise not be shown.

Honorarium: The Arts Center will provide an honorarium of $1200 to selected artists. The honorarium covers artist expenses for the project including design, fabrication, travel and installation.

About Art in Rural Storefronts:

Art in Rural Storefronts serves regional audiences in Linn and Benton Counties by bringing innovative, thought-provoking art projects to rural communities that lack spaces dedicated to contemporary/non-commercial art. More than just a beautification project, Art in Rural Storefronts strives to bring new ideas to unexpected community spaces. The project also supports regional artists by providing the opportunity to share their work to new audiences.

Art in Rural Storefronts is collaboration between The Arts Center and Rural Development Initiatives. The project is funded in part by the Oregon Arts Commission.

All artist applications must be submitted via email.

Mission

The mission of the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles is to promote the art, craft and history of quilts and textiles.

Textile art transcends cultural, ethnic, age and gender boundaries and encompasses traditional as well as contemporary forms. The museum provides a serious venue for all artists working with textiles, filling a void left by larger institutions with a narrower view of what defines artistic expression. Its exhibits and programs promote the appreciation of quilts and textiles as art and provide an understanding of their role in the lives of their makers, in cultural traditions, and as historical documents.
