Small Expressions is an annual, international, juried exhibit sponsored by the Handweavers Guild of America, Inc., to showcase fiber art on a small scale [not to exceed 15 inches (38cm) in any direction]. Small Expressions was established at the 1984 Convergence in Dallas, Texas. The late Diane Itter wrote in her juror statement that year:
“Fiber artists working on a small scale must pay special attention to the limitations involved. In order to succeed, a small scale work must maintain an identity and integrity of its own which excludes works which might be viewed as maquettes for larger works or the sense that the work is cut from a larger work. Careful attention must be paid to choice of design, materials, techniques, and craftsmanship. This does not mean a simplification of ideas or image but rather very careful attention paid to all details, without the risk of becoming precious.”
Juror: Arturo Alonzo Sandoval
Internationally known artist and alumni-endowed professor of fiber at the University of Kentucky, Lexington.
Eligibility
Three pieces may be entered per artist. Pieces exhibited in previous Small Expressions exhibits are not eligible.
Submitted work is limited to fiber techniques (interlaced, felted, paper, etc.). All work must be of exhibition quality, completed within the last two years (since January 2007) and not previously published.
The size of the finished work may not exceed 15 inches (38 cm) in any direction including any mounting or display devices.
Work executed under classroom/educational guidance or supervision is not eligible.
Awards
First, second and third place awards will be selected by the juror. Additional special criteria awards may be available. For updates please check the HGA Website.
Entry Fees
Entry fees for up to three works are $25 for a current HGA Member, and $40 for a non-member.
For students with a copy of a valid Student ID from an accredited educational institution, no fee is required.
